Manchester United vs Chel$ki
Date: Wednesday, 26 January 2005, 20:00
Competition: Carling Cup
Venue: Old Trafford

Since we beat Arse, they haven't been the same, and same with Liverpool. It's very important that we rattle them by crushing them at OT. 2-0 to United, Ronaldo and Scholes to score.

4-2 Rooney, Ronaldo, Scholes, Keano... (really tough match ahead... injuries and fights!!!)

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a score draw and we go out on away goals, hopefully we beat them though and stop this talk about them winning the Quadruple, and then we can beat the Dippers in the final and avenge the 2003 final loss.

i hope fergie put out our 1st eleven... we need to beat them in this... it's psychological!

wish ruud is around to show drogba what a world class striker is like!

I reckon we should stick with our 2nd string, we stick to our plan...

We've lost 4 finals - 2003 (Pool), 1994 (Villa), 1991 (Sheff Wed), 1983 (Pool).

We've only won the once - 1992 (Forest).

I reckon if we get to the final we'll win it. It's the law of averages. Or something.

C'mon lads, beat Chelsea so we can get another shot at humiliating the Dippers!

SAF has NEVER lost a FA- or League-Cup semi-final.

Neville Looks To Start Chelsea Blip

Phil Neville has urged Manchester United to give Chelsea a forceful shove into the unknown on Wednesday.

The heavyweight duo meet in the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final at Old Trafford, and Neville believes knocking out Chelsea could affect the Blues' league form.

Jose Mourinho's men are 11 points ahead of United with only 14 games remaining in the Barclays Premiership, and have shown no signs of the blip Ferguson and Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger so confidently predicted they would suffer.

With the Stamford Bridge outfit not due to take on the Red Devils in the league until April 16, by which time the title race could be over, Ferguson's squad know Wednesday night offers them a chance to undermine Chelsea themselves.

And, in an exclusive MUTV phone-in, Neville warned his team-mates it is an opportunity they must not spurn.

"We do not know how Chelsea will react to a defeat," said the long-serving England full-back.

"All we can do is give them an opportunity to find out. Arsenal had gone 49 games unbeaten in the league when we beat them in October but they had a wobble after that. Chelsea are 11 points clear of us and we need them to suffer the same kind of thing.

"We would rather be in their situation than having to chase as we are at the moment. We do not like the title not being in our own hands.

"But we still think it can be done, we just need someone to beat them and even though this is not a league game, if we win you don't know how they will come out of it. It's only when you start losing games that the pressure starts to tell."

In stark contrast to the general antipathy that seems to exist between United and Arsenal, relations between the Red Devils and league leaders is warm and friendly.

Neville has previously echoed his manager's views that the arrival of Mourinho from Porto has been good for English football and the 28-year-old is gracious enough to acknowledge that if there is one side playing better than his own just now, it is the men who stand between United and a second League Cup final berth in three years.

"If you look at the form table, Chelsea are the only team above us," said Neville, who started in the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago.

"They are a quality side who we always felt were better suited to playing away from home, which is why we don't hold any real advantage going into the second leg."

Neville is hopeful of earning a recall after being in the ironic situation of being rested for Saturday's victory over Aston Villa.

During a season when his sporadic appearances have mystified most observers given the new five-year contract he signed last summer, Neville has gone from famine to feast over the last month, starting seven games in 22 days prior to the weekend win.

It means the Bury-born player has now turned out 21 times for his only professional club and while that figure is only half what he hopes for overall, Neville insists he has never even thought about leaving.

"The thing that has kept me going ever since I got into the first team was the fear of one day having to leave," he said.

"Manchester United is all I know. Playing for them is all I ever wanted to do and I would definitely like to end my career here.

"I signed a five-year contract last season and I am not looking beyond that. Just the prospect of having to walk into another dressing room is quite daunting."

Neville admitted there have been times when he has knocked on Ferguson's door for a chat about his future. But there have never been any tantrums and the player's concerns have always been eased by confirmation that he is an essential part of the Scot's plans.

"I have been to see the manager two or three times over the last 10 years but I have never spoken to him about leaving," he said.

"The first thing he always says is that he wants me to play for Manchester United. After that the talk is always positive. He is the one man we always put our trust in."

Good article! Hope Phil keeps hold of the captaincy for this too! Wouldn't it be great to see him lift the cup in Cardiff?

I think rest Ronaldo, then he can be fresh if needed later on. Fletch is injured

Bellion should stay away from the line-up, thanks.

Fergie will put out a strong side, Keane should play anyway as he is suspended for the boro match.

Strongest eleven + good, determined performance = win

Anything else and we get dicked on

We will play a stonger team than that.

We need Phil for this match. He's the one we turn to when we need a dangerous attacking player just marked out of the game, he's done it to Henry, now it's time for Robben.

Doesn't Phil realize that if you lot do win, you are still 11 points adrift?

I hardly think the league cup will send somebody spirling out of control.

By the way, we have lost, twice this season. How has that effected us? ;) Clutching at straws is Phillip, son of Neville Neville.

That said, good luck tomorrow night. I hope for a good clean game with no injuries for either side.

We have done something that Fergus hadn't planned on doing though, making you field first teamers in the League Cup when he said he would stick with what got him there. Made him change his plans, so this tells you he feels your season is on the ropes already. Just my opinion of course.

Honest yes, which just shows you have no class. I honestly don't want any Utd players to get hurt, why would I?

Anyway, let's just leave it at that and not turn a football matchday thread into an issue of morals, shall we?

Smith to return

Alan Smith is set to return to United's starting line-up for the Carling Cup semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Reds striker picked up an ankle injury in the final minute of the first leg at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, but he has trained over the last couple of days and is set to start tomorrow night's clash.

Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to field a strong side against Jose Mourinho's men and, as he told ManUtd.com at his pre-match press briefing, he's delighted to have a number of different options at his disposal.

"Alan Smith trained today and if he comes through OK then he is certainly a consideration," said Ferguson.

"Darren Fletcher misses the game because he got an ankle injury on Saturday. I'll be assessing the situation after training on Tuesday.

"It is a temptation to play a strong team," added the United boss. "I'm giving it serious consideration.

"I've got Saturday's FA Cup game against Middlesbrough to think about. And then we've got the league game against Arsenal on the Tuesday. So, we have to spread the load.

"Having Louis Saha, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Quinton Fortune and Alan Smith back gives me great options."

The match is one that Ferguson is looking forward to. He said: "It's a complete one-off now. It's a straight sudden death.

"It should be a fantastic game and the atmosphere will be wonderful. Our record in semi finals is terrific so hopefully we can maintain that."

Report by Gemma Thompson and Ben Hibbs, at Carrington.

Fergie: Players will take spotlight

SIR Alex Ferguson expects the stars on show in Wednesday's heavyweight Carling Cup tie between Manchester United and Chelsea to completely overshadow his personal duel with Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea boss heads to Old Trafford for the first time since his Porto side dumped United out of the Champions League last March - and just a fortnight after his criticism of Ferguson for his attempt to influence referee Neale Barry in the first leg of this semi-final.

Ferguson insists he holds Mourinho in high esteem, claiming he can see some of his old self in the supremely confident Portuguese.

But the long-serving United manager is confident his own head-to-head with the man who has won two European trophies in as many years and guided Chelsea to the brink of their first title since 1955 will not deflect from a mouth-watering clash which will leave the victors as the sole English club capable of completing an unprecedented trophy four-timer this season.

"Jose Mourinho has done fantastically well at Chelsea," said Ferguson.

"They have a system; they are very organised - and once they get a goal they are very good at protecting it.

"But this game is not about Jose Mourinho or Alex Ferguson. This game is about 22 great players.

"Both sides have match-winners, and working out which player will win the match is far more interesting that any talk about managers."

One of those players will be Arjen Robben, the youngster Ferguson thought he had signed up only for Chelsea to swoop in and snatch the 21-year-old from his grasp.

Robben has already established himself as one of the Premier League's stellar talents - but having missed the league encounter between the sides through injury and the first Carling Cup meeting because of suspension, it will be the first time the former PSV Eindhoven man faces the team he snubbed.

"I am not surprised how Arjen Robben has adapted to the English game," was Ferguson's assessment of the flying Dutchman.

"We knew all about him."

Scholes the key for United

Simon Stone

IT seems ridiculous now but it is only three months ago that some pundits were seriously suggesting Paul Scholes should be dumped by Manchester United.

After his mysterious retirement from the England scene had failed to prompt an upturn in his Red Devils form and his alarming goal drought stretched to six months and then seven, for the first time in his career, critics were sharpening their knives and getting ready to insert them into Scholes' back.

He may still have been only 29 but according to some, Sir Alex Ferguson's ginger genius was finished, washed up, ready to be consigned to the United history books as David Beckham and Nicky Butt had been before him.

It wasn't a view shared by Ferguson of course, and rightly so.

If any player epitomised what the United manager believed to be the perfect footballer, Scholes was it. Quiet and unassuming off the field, completely devoid of the celebrity glamour that so antagonised the manager about Beckham, Scholes is a demon on the pitch.

Intelligent, quick-thinking, two-footed and with an eye for goal, Ferguson knew it was only a matter of time before the Oldham-born star returned to top form. And how his patience has been rewarded.

Since finally hitting the net against Charlton on November 20, Scholes has scored eight times in 15 appearances and been a massive influence in United's current run of 18 domestic games unbeaten.

If there is one man Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will be urging his side to pay particular attention to at Old Trafford tomorrow, it will be Scholes.

Not that the man himself is getting too carried away by his current success. When asked if he had set any targets for himself this season, the response contained a shrug of virtual indifference.

"I don't really set targets," he said.

"Maybe if I could get up to 15 goals I would be quite happy but basically it's a team game and the most important thing is that we win."

Burden

It is not quite the whole truth, for Scholes has admitted not scoring for so long became a burden given the 123 occasions he has found the net in United colours. But it is hard to imagine this most laidback of characters being eaten up by angst at any situation he finds himself in.

After all, this is the man who without the merest hint of irony suggested his phenomenal goalscoring record was purely due to "a bit of good luck".

That said, Scholes will not even consider reflecting on a career which has brought him every medal he could wish for, including a Champions League gong even though suspension ruled him out of that famous victory over Bayern Munich, until it is finally over.

Of far more importance is the impending visit of Chelsea, and the chance to inflict a few mental scars on Mourinho and his team before the title race becomes academic.

"One bad result and it could all change," Scholes told MUTV.

"It is not nice to lose games, they have not had that feeling for a while and you never know how it might affect them.

"They have plenty of points in hand and we need them to slip up. But if we can beat them tomorrow, they could start dropping a few points in the league as well."
