Liverpool vs Manchester United

He think we are going to lose because Liverpool created a fair few chances in LAST seasons game?

Reina banks on three points

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina expects his side to beat United in Sunday's massive Premier League showdown at Anfield.

Despite last weekend's shock defeat at Reading, the Merseysiders clinched a place in the Champions League knockout stages with a convincing win in Marseille - a timely boost for Reina and his colleagues.

“We certainly have a lot of confidence about Sunday now," said the Spaniard. “We know we must be ready for United but it could be a great game in front of our own fans - and we expect to win.

“We have one of the best teams in Europe, although there are some tough teams in the Premier League and it’s a lot more difficult this year."

Rafa Benitez's side currently sit fourth in the Premier League, six points behind United with a game in hand, and Reina admits his side face a huge ask to win the title.

“At Reading last week we saw that anyone can beat anyone else at the moment," he said. "Chelsea, Arsenal and United are in really good form and it’s very difficult to finish ahead of them in the long term. But the Premier League is a long race and we want to keep the momentum going.”

Defender Jamie Carragher believes three points on Sunday would give Liverpool the mental boost required to regain the league title for the first time since 1990.

"We haven't beaten either of our rivals this season and we need to change that," said Carragher told Zoo magazine. "The draws against Arsenal and Chelsea felt like defeats because in both games we took the lead.

"Beating United would mean more than three points - psychologically we would really start to believe."

Rafa Benitez's side are expected to be boosted by the return of Xabi Alonso from injury, while there are lingering doubts over the involvement of Steve Finnan and Daniel Agger definitely misses out.

I thought they already knew it was going to be their year...

Mark Halsey is going to be the referee.:nervous::annoyed:

Got to say this is probably the best decision the Premier League could have made for choice of ref. I'm not saying he's the best in the League, but the guy was brought up in Bolton, he's one of the few ref's that should understand the rivalry between the two clubs and you'll probably find a bit more rope given to each side to begin with.

We're doomed. :(

Le Tiss predicts
-------------------------------------------------------
AWAY WIN - Neither will mind a point from this and a defeat is not really going to be the end of the world, but when these two meet, it's all about pride. I can only see this being the usual Liverpool-United stuff, which means basically a good old scrap! I hope Liverpool take the game to them - although I'm not convinced the manager will let them - but by the same token, we know how United can hurt you on the break. And it is that extra bit of quality in attack that will decide this. It will be close, but I can see United's firepower edging this, 2-1.

The one area where they are much better off than Liverpool, Arsenal and even Chelsea is midfield. In midweek they rested players and still called in Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick, both internationals.

Paul Scholes is still injured of course and it will be interesting to see if Owen Hargreaves makes this because he and Anderson seem to be the favoured central pairing.

This might cause collapse here. :D

I'm hoping Fergie doesn't see any need to tinker here. Try a 4-3-3 or something. I'm fine with Giggs tucking every now and then as he does nowadays but we need two proper wingers. Play the regular first team and we should be favourites. We'll have a strong bench as well - Saha, Nani, Carrick and O'Shea are great options to have.

I can see him playing Hargreaves, Carrick and Anderson in central midfield. Liverpool will have three in there and Carrick has played really well the last couple of times he got a game.

That would leave Roo, Tev and Ronaldo, as a front three.

Personally, I'd rather see us go at them, in a 442, dropping Hargreaves for Giggs. But I'm not sure if Fergie will see it the same way.

Le Tiss reckon our midfield is the best. I thought Liverpool had the best midfield in the universe with world class subs like Sissoko and the better than Anderson Brazilian Lucas.

Le Tiss = shit expert

Soon he'll start calling us the Champoions as well.

YES, YES, YES!

That scouse cnut thinks we are going to lose. That´s fantastic. Now is our victory inevitable.

what a retarded basis for prediction. 'Liverpool will win because they have to.' Does the scouse Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime realise that winning is the actual aim of playing the match, and United might want to win as well?

I think Anderson and Hargreaves (if fit) can cope with Liverpool's midfield. Both are tireless workers, especially Hargreaves and Anderson brings the passing quality. I really hope we don't go with 3 in midfield. I don't think it suits our style of play. Lets start with the 4-4-2 and if need be bring Giggs centrally and put Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez as a front 3.

Also, the fact that we went to Roma and played 2 up top gives me hope that we're getting away from the tinkering of the formation we've had in recent years.

Alonso's been passed fit to start.

Benitez will play Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano in midfield.

Do we ignore this, play a midfield two and try to steam-roller them? Or do we adapt our team selection/formation?

Don't forget, we're the away team.

Discuss.

Of course we have to respond. Last season we were somewhat overrun in midfield and were lucky to run out winners (thank god!). This is a typical fixture in which we should play a three man central midfield - OH, Carrick and Anderson. The problem is, if we do, who makes way ? I know who I'd leave on the bench but Fergie may well think differently.

It will be extremely interesting to see how Anderson plays in this game.

i'd be surprised if rafa throws alonso straight back in.

I guess you'll play 4231. Carrick and Hargreaves; Ronaldo Anderson/Giggs Rooney; Tevez. Assuming everybody's fit. If he does decide to play Giggs it's perm 2 from 3 (Hargreaves/Carrick/Anderson).

I think he will play Giggs. Big-game player an' all that.

But I also think he's gonna find room for Anderson.

I also think it will be Rooney, rather than Tevez, at the head of any 4-2-3-1 formation.

And don't forget, he bought Hargreaves specifically for games like this one. And Carrick.

In other words, I haven't a clue how we're gonna line up!

If Hargreaves and/or Anderson really is injured, though, it all gets very straightforward. And not in a good way.

It'll be Giggs going up with Tevez, Anderson and Hargreaves in't middle, and Rooney dropping to the left to track back. Carrick won't play.

And I'm none of the above, I'm just nervous 'cause it's a big game.

Title deciding, no matter what people say.

Of course Giggs will play, that's a no-brainer if ever I heard of one.

1-1: Gerrard, Tevez.

We don't ignore it but we still keep the same formation, you just make your strikers aware that they'll need to put pressure on the spare man in midfield.

We're all nervous.

But we also all believe our team can win this game and the league title. Do you?

("our team" being MUFC, in case you were wondering)

I know that our team is the best in the league. We have a true balance of talent, youth, experience and heart.

We have one of the best Managers to grace the world of football, and the right staff to go with Him.

We have the current best player in the world in attack and a future contender for that accolade playing with him. We have a perfectly balanced defence and the most experienced Captain currently playing in England.

But not all rewards go to the most deserving parties, this year the main prize will go to liverpool. I hate it more than anyone, but that's the way it will be.

Just out of interest what were the stats of last season's fixtures? You know, possession, shots on/off target, cards, etc?
