Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

"But of course, if there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible."
"That doesn't mean that I'm bothered with leaving Tottenham - I'm not thinking about that every hour and every minute.

"I'm happy at White Hart Lane - my status is great, the fans like me and I do have everything I need.

"But then again - when you experience playing in Champions League, you want to keep playing in this tournament

I think that's what's known in the trade as a come-and-get-me plea.

Yes.

Everything points to this (his long contract, Levy's public statement, the very healthy state of the club's finances and the fact that Modric is the heartbeat of the current team) and nothing points the other way except the usual media guff from journos desperate to find something to write about.

I admire your confidence! ;)

To be honest, having read this interview I would be surprised if he didn't end up a Manchester United player on September 1st.

He is the type of player we need, he doesn't rule out a move, Fergie is a known admirer and Scholes has retired. The ingredients are there and all Spurs can do know is to play hard ball to get as much as they can for him. In current circumstances, Modric has Manchester United written all over him.

But If Chelsea and Citeh also want him, that be a big problem as we lose out in a bidding war. :(

Nar, you're forgetting that we're Man United, the player will want to come here and with the timing of Scholesys retirement I think we'd match any shitty/rentboys bid.

Much will depend on the players personal opinion though, and I don't see Modric willing to be part of the squad at Chelsea or Man City while he can try to succeed Scholes as Man United's midfield maestro. He's guaranteed to play for us, something he can't be sure of at Chelsea or Man City. Given his age also the timing is perfect for him to move to a bigger club, and I don't think there will be a better oportunity for him than now.

I think it'll be a different story if 'Arry leaves.

If he goes to Chelsea (as an increasing amount of punters think given the recent tumbling odds) then I think a few players might want out, especially if Chelsea come sniffing.

Read an interesting article which suggested that Modric could triple his wages moving to United or another top four club.

He seems like a decent bloke not purely motivated by money but he might be concerned that an offer from a top four club may not come along again given that at coming up 26 his next move might be his big one.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Harry's probably been telling all and sundry that he's going to Chelsea so his odds to stay at Spurs come out and he can make a fortune backing himself to stay. Wheeler dealer.

Fingers crossed we get this guy. But I feel we'd still need another CM as well.

It would be great to sign him and another CM no doubt, but compared to what we have now even the sole signing of Modric would improve us greatly.

Me too and as much as I'd love that to be Sneijder I think the likes of Rodwell are more likely.

Hoping Ando can really kick on next year and hoping Fletcher rediscovers his best form.

Certainly. But we'll still be short. Giggs will be another year older, Carrick is not the player he once was, the list goes on. Modric would be the only top drawer CM we have.

Agreed - with Modric and potentially another CM, plus Carrick, Fletcher and Anderson, given they will play as we know they can, we would be well covered in the CM area. We're still two signings away from such scenario so it's a long way...

You don't want Modric? Why?

Because I believe there are as good or better players out there who would go for around the same price we will be forking out to sneaky Spurs.

Now if he was one of two midfield signings, maybe. But I doubt we're going to be buying much after the 30-40 million this guy is going to cost us.

I think he will sign, I just don't think he will be our record signing. I reckon around £20-25m.

Considering he cost Spurs £18.75m I would say that less than £25m is very unlikely.

He'll be £30m+

Out of interest, when where these most recent comments made? Is it coincidence they appear on the same day Scholes retires? Or am I just reading far too much into it!

Think it's from today. I wouldn't be too surprised if those comments were in fact connected with Scholes announcing his retirement.

Nah, he was just being interviewed by a Croatian paper ahead of the national team's Euro qualifiers. Nothing do with Scholes.

MODRIC: SPURS EXIT IS POSSIBLE

Luka Modric admits he is not quite sure if he will be playing for Tottenham next season.

Chelsea and Manchester United have been strongly linked with a summer move for the midfielder.

The Croatia international says he is happy at Spurs and is not thinking of leaving White Hart Lane.

Instead he is focusing solely on Croatia's Euro 2012 qualifier against Georgia on Friday.

But the midfielder believes a transfer is always possible in football and he admits he would like to play in the Champions League again.

He told Jutarnji List: "Everybody wants to know what will happen with me.

"I'm trying to stay calm as my national team has a really important match coming.

"So I will tell you the same as all ways - my club status is the same as it was before.

"But of course, if there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible.

"That doesn't mean that I'm bothered with leaving Tottenham - I'm not thinking about that every hour and every minute.

"I'm happy at White Hart Lane - my status is great, the fans like me and I do have everything I need.

"But then again - when you experience playing in Champions League, you want to keep playing in this tournament."

Modric and another CM would be fantastic.

I could actually see fergie using Anderson as a makeweight into this though, since he and modric play somewhat similar roles. Anderson + £10m or something.

We would still want another player though, I could even see us making a sneaky bid for xavi if barca sign fabregas - he would be ideal alongside modric, I am also a fan of de Rossi though.

Schweinsteiger would be my first choice, but unavailable.

As Pogue posted the other week, how often has SAF done a player plus money deal in his time here?

So Xavi is "possible" but not Schweinsteiger?

That has to be a joke.

I didnt say it was likely, but he came out saying he nearly signed for us before in his career (Xavi) and if Barclona signed Fabregas and someone came in with a good offer I could see them parting with him.

Obviously his age would be the main issue, but with the likes of Giggs and Scholes playing well into their mid 30s.......ah feck it, ok fine, we arent going to sign Xavi.

Again I agree its not likely, and exchange deals are usual the stuff of FM and not reality, but if the deal suits both parties then I dont see why we should rule it out simply out of principle.

Think of Luka Modric has any principles he'll join us, a club with enormous history, and currently more succesful, instead of what I like to call 'fake' clubs, like Chelsea or Man.City. Luckily I think Modric is a man of principles.

It also helps to have an option to come to us - we'd need to make a bid and have it accepted for Modric to even bother considering us. And none of us know if we're even interested. Just because SAF likes a player doesn't mean he's going to buy him.

If he is, he won't leave Spurs a year into a 6 year contract.

I hope we strengthen a tad more than that tbh.

I just dont get the fuss on here about Rodwell. If he was anything special he'd be playing week-in-week-out for Everton.

It seems to be widely regarded that Rodwell has huge potential, maybe Moyes doesn't have the luxury of being able to develop him at Everton whilst still getting results.
