Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Cant see United getting him, Spurs after selling there fringe players should have enough in the kitty to strengthen there team and wont need to sell. Sir Alex is not going to spend silly money just to get his hands on Modric, in the past Spurs have not made it easy to get there players.

Also if Young does arrive this would mean Giggs will be playing CM most of the time. I also believe that Sir Alex will keep to his policy of buying talented youngsters and grooming them. A policy that seems to be working very well.

Seriously doubt that.Young can and has played in the middle,a role similar to Giggs who has been playing that role recently. That's if we are in for him of course

Plus I don't believe he'll buy that many talented youngsters,Varane apart if the rumours are to be believed, There are a few that will be given chances come the new season

What I meant was that Young will play in the left thus leaving Giggs to play more in the middle. In fact I doubt we will see Giggs playing on the wing again. Young will replace Giggs on the left and Giggs who has been playing more and more in the Centre will replace Scholes.

If the money being said of 40 plus for Modric I just cant see Sir Alex paying that. I talented youngest maybe a Rodwell will come in.

Giggs, replace Scholes?

Sorry, no chance.Giggs hasn't really played on the left for 2 years besides

Rodwell has dropped off the radar a bit...not sure

It's not just about age, it's about the type of CM we need, we have lost our only real game dictating CM.

Giggs has fitted very well in that CM postion and was our best play maker on many occassion's. If Young does arrive our left sided midfield will be sorted. Giggs will never play there again. We have been using a policy that has worked over the years regarding bringing talented youngsters in. Why would this change, yes we have lost Scholes but he didnt really play that often to the end of the season anyway, So with Young arriving if this happens Giggs fulls a void left for this year with Scholes gone.A Rodwell(Talented youngster) type player comes in We have 3 talented youngsters at reserve level. Gives them another year to progress and CM sorted without greasing Levy's pockets.

Modric is good not 40 - 50 million good.

I think we have enough young players in our academy who realistically have a chance to make our first team. So I don't see the point in us bringing a player like Rodwell in. He has not impressed me this season at all and he seems to be injury prone a little. So splashing £20m on Rodwell this summer will be like paying £40m for Modric - both of which are totally unacceptable.

We kinda need experience to replace Scholes. I would rather bring in another central midfielder than buy another winger. Rodwell has not lit the world alight with his ability this past season. So he won't significantly improve our team at the moment. Plus we have almost sealed a deal for Varane. If he won't be deployed at central defense this season, then he might be used in central midfield.

People keep bringing up Sahin, Ozil and Kehdira but they were all players who ran down their contracts and went for less than a fair market valuation. Modric is worth north of £30M.

If rumours are to be believed, that he wants to leave, then that brings the price down a tad. Mind, he's only just signed a long contract so the club probably hold all the cards.

Or keeping him for another season could mean Spurs finish in the top 4, with Modric having his best season ever, boosting his value even higher and still with 4 years left on his contract even after next season has ended. Nothing is written in stone.

Spurs will have plenty to spend this summer without needing to sell Modric (or Bale).

Kyle Walker has impressed at RB whilst on loan at Villa - he's now back and is sure to be competing hard with Corluka for the RB slot at Spurs next season. Young Danny Rose impressed me hugely at LB in the tail-end of last season - and looks set to provide stiff competition for Ekotto this coming season. And if we sign a quality striker (or two), maybe bring in the likes of Parker to compete (or rotate) with the impressive Sandro .... then Spurs won't be far away from being right up there in the mix.

All in all, I don't think - bar our current mix of strikers - that our "squad deficiencies" are all that big, especially considering the good young players - Walker, Rose and especially Sandro - who may well be about to break through this coming year.

Until you fix your defense, 6th will be good enough. Dawson, Injured King, Injured Woodgate, Kaboul, Old Gallas, Bassoung...

I still don't think that is convincing enough.

Mancity will invest huge... Chelsea too.

So I still think that race for 4th would be extremely difficult, not that spurs can't make it but I leave it up to Harry to produce some magic this summer or else 5-6th Spot again which may drop Modric's Value.

I don't want Modric for 40m anyway.

In the market we're in, Modic is worth £30m+. I'd much rather pay that sort of money for him than £20m-odd for "Mr Hype" Jack Rodwell.

It doesn't really bother me how much we pay for a player of that quality. It's going to be £30m+ regardless so, as long as they produce the goods, the difference between £25m and £35m is irrelevant to me personally.

There's not a chance of signing Modric for anything less than 40m unless he creates a big fuss and tries to force them to sell. Spurs don't want to sell, so it's going to take a huge fee to talk them into it.

My tip (as I've been saying all season) - he'll stay there one more year and then if (as looks most likely) they don't make the CL again the following season, then he'll look to move on.

Why did he sign a lengthy contract like that? I never quite undersand it, you are at a club like Tottenham that will sooner or later bump out of Champions League, doesn't compete for major trophies and has a director who doesn't like to sell his top assets, yet you sign an extension that will take you into your 30s and makes it very hard to get a move somewhere else. I cannot imagine him being satisfied with the level Tottenham are at for much longer unless he doesn't really have much ambition but when the time comes, he will find it nearly impossible to move away. I don't get it.

For what its worth!!

ALEX FERGUSON has been told he will need to find in excess of £20million to sign Tottenham star Luka Modric.
The Manchester United boss is a big fan of the Croatian playmaker, 25, who he sees as the ideal replacement for the retired Paul Scholes.
And he now plans to test Tottenham's resolve.
Spurs do not want to sell Modric but a top White Hart Lane source says a deal will be inevitable.
He said: "The word is that Sir Alex has already spoken directly to Harry and said how much he admires Modric and how much he wants him.
"And as much as Harry wants to keep him he knows United can make an offer we just can't refuse.
"So Harry's busy now trying to do the Joe Cole deal to bring in a new playmaker to compensate for the expected departure of Luka."

Please god no.

'A White Hart Lane source says....'. I'd say that journo is chucking at how easy his job is.

When Carrick cost 16 mil, everybody said he was overpriced. Well, consider what has happened to this club since. He basically turned around this club, helping win trophy after trophy. Before he came in, Smith and O'shea were main midfielders. Looking back, 16 mil looks a bargain.

There were an awful lot of factors in 2006 which combined to turn around the club, Carrick was far from the most important.

WUM and it was £18.9m

So you see Modric for 30-40m will definitely be worth the investment ?

Looking at the footballing sense then it probably will but if we searched harder, I'm sure players that can do what Modric can already can are already out there and costs less than a quarter of his current 40m valulation...

Often when talking bollocks they don't use their name on the articles, though, so I'm glad he wrote his name there. It doesn't have to mean anything, but they're usually a bit more sure about the source then.

This is especially in the Daily Heil to be fair, where "Sportsmail reporter" rarely is followed by good articles. ;)

I don't believe this one myself, by the way.

I would still prefer Sniedjer over Modric. I just hope if we end up going for Modric, we don't spend more than £30m.

It was £14M and the rest 4.6 was dependent on us winning trophies etc. Carrick has been an integral of our title winning teams, only a moron would suggest otherwise.

18.6M Spent Well.

Spurs are on a lookout for a stiker, and it wouldnt surprise me to see Berbatov or Welbeck include in the deal.

Agreed. Been saying for a while now that the treatment of Berba seems like a rapid way to unsettle him & we've been trying to include him in a deal for Luka a while.

But that's just my thinking

It's not much of a story, anyway: United can make an offer Spurs can't refuse - well, we knew that (if we have the money which is far from certain, obviously), there's nothing new there.

The word is that Sir Alex has already spoken directly to Harry and said how much he admires Modric and how much he wants him.

And this part is quite easy to believe: they have a good relationship, they do talk quite often as far as I'm aware and I'm sure Fergie does admire Modric. Doesn't mean anything though.

Liverpool to sign Marveaux
Tottenham to sign Cole
United to sign Modric

Everyone happy

Sport journalists job are fecking easy isn't it? Most of us here can do it. In fact, I think most of us here have done it before when we created that Kaka to United story

Glaston just topped himself.
Nah ...

Modric won't be signing for Man Utd unless 50m+ is coughed up, which they can't afford unless they both (a) forgo spending 17m on the new GK that they need above all else and (b) also forget about signing Ashley Young. And even then it's doubtful they'd have the dosh.

And Spurs won't be signing Joe Cole.

So I'm happy.

I'm concerned about how we're going to be able to keep Sneijder, Modric, Nasri, Young and Rodwell all happy, in addition to our current crop of midfielders
