Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Unless you are Mr Levy I wouldn't be that bold, especially when big offers came in for Berbatov, Carrick and Keane.

If I were you I'd take £30 million if such an offer came in, your transfer budget isn't going to stretch awfully far if you don'r raise funds.
As I've already explained in this thread (and given solid reasons), Spurs already have plenty of spare cash to spend this summer - and will have even more after the sale of fringe players (and some players who were on loan last season).

As for £30m, don't make me laugh. £30m might just about buy you Modric's right foot .... but he's pretty two-footed you know.

Glaston!

You should be surprised when you see Modric walk away for less then £30m.

He said the valuation is 'too low', not 'so low, it's a fecking joke'.

That is comforting and maybe Spurs would accept something around the £30m mark.
The agent can say what he likes. He's not the one who determines whether or not Modric will be sold.

How much is the rest of him, then?

Short-term no - long-term - of course it is. If Modric wants to be sold - Spurs can keep him maybe 1 year - but they know that his value deteriorates as a) his contract runs down, b) he performs slightly less impressive or c) both of the below.

Aren't you gunna lay any conditions down? Or is the bet purely if ge stays or goes? I only say it because Glaston's said a number of times that he'll stay unless "silly money" is offered.

Glaston has consistently talked of £45 to 50m as his definition of silly money.

Do you honestly not see the dilemma for Spurs?

If you have so much money why did you not spend more either last summer or in January and give yourself a better chance of staying in the CL?

As I've already said in this thread, in my view it will take at least 50m to persuade Levy to sell.

That doesn't make him worth 50m. It does mean that Levy doesn't wish to sell.

Glaston, your comments are ridiculous.

It's quite obvious the 30m would buy him or isn't that far off of the fee Spurs would accept. Your comments (including the one about his right foot) sound like he was worth a lot more than that, presumably 40m-50m, which is absurd.

Personally I wouldn't even be surprised if he went for under 30m.

Modric is as good as gone. He'll play it nicely at this moment, and if Levy don't play ball he'll start throwing his toys out. Accept the inevitable Glastone.

He will likely go, and it won't be for anything close to £50 million.

Messi will want to bale out soon.

They tried, remember those last-ditch bids for Rossi and Forlán (iirc)?

Spurs are at that difficult stage: they have money but it's hard to get quality players who would improve them - because now they have to compete with the biggest clubs and have to try and get players who are holding out for a move to one of the biggest clubs because they think they're good enough for that.

It unsettles the player for a start.

The player will already have been unsettled. He wants a move, or he'd quash this speculation immediately.

Time will tell whether or not my comments are "ridiculous".

I recall getting the same load of criticism re. Berbatov for two summers running. But both times my assessment proved right about him NOT being sold (the first time around) and then - the 2nd time around - the minimum fee he would be sold for.

Indeed. All he has done thus far, is to make it quite clear he is open to a move.

I didn't think he would leave a while ago. I have changed my mind.

Chelsea have £22m bid turned down.

Why on earth would they bid £22m for a player Spurs value at around £40m? It's a waste of time.

It's a clever amount to bid; not only sees whether any other clubs will join the race but also starts the bidding at a lower price. The timing of it is also very astute.

No Champions League football and no imminent prospect of silverware are great motivators. He's at the right age to move on and Spurs will get a good fee.

Adam to Spurs as a replacement.

Happy summer Glaston.

I'll enjoy re-quoting this come Sept. 1st ;)

No they are at that difficult stage because this rather easy strategy of buying premium young talent is not sufficient to take Spurs where they need/want to go.

Players want top wages and Spurs don't pay this. In the long-run Levy knows that transfer fees are generally much lower risk than wages. Hence his willingness to pay reasonably high fees relative to their wage base.

Spurs can raise a reasonable amount by selling some dross but it won't cut their wage bill that much.

I like Modric, he's a decent enough player, but the hype surrounding him I just don't buy. If anything, I imagine when Anderson is of similar age he'll be a superior player, for this reason I assume Modric would be worth around £28-30 million right now as he enters his prime.

However, I think some spurs fans have a right to feel he's worth more after the whole Andy Carroll affair, but still, in reality, Modric isn't woorth 40 or 50 million.

That's sheer lunacy. Sneijder is only really worth 35-40 million and he's achieved a lot more than Luka.

In retrospect, that fee Liverpool paid for Carroll seems more incredible by the day. What were they thinking?
