Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

I don't understand why fans always bicker so much over whether a player will or won't move clubs; always interesting to throw a bet into the mix though!

What I will say is that Modric is a Champions League quality footballer. It'll depend largely on how important that is to him as to whether he leaves - plenty of top players over the years have valued other things higher than playing and competing consistently at the highest level.

Okay - I'm sceptical of this one. I've yet to see any official or even semi-official source that says we're even interested in Modric. Are we?

Manchester United are not in the business of announcing our targets in public. We're not managed by Harry Redknapp.

If you believe that you'll believe anything.

It's one thing to quote cash reserves, but you might also try quoting debt levels.

It's not a case of believing anything.

According to the club's most recent set of accounts, the club have circa £113m in the bank.

That figure will rise to £170m by the end of the summer, once season-ticket revenue for the coming season is banked.

Why would I quote the debt levels?

Has anything actually happened?

Right but 1. I said official or semi-official (guess I should have said semi-credible).

2. We do actually! We spoke about De Gea before he's signed anything.

3. Spurs would also be classed as official.

4. On the semi-credible route mgiht have included BBC/Gazzeto della Sport/Sky Sports or even football writers with clout.

So nothing is ever 100%, but in this case it's pretty darn close to it because I don't see any club being willing to offer 50m as the starting point for negotiations.

That's probably a reasonably fair assessment
I think your number may be a bit high. I think £40m may be closer to the mark. But still, that's by the by

I expect him to be at Spurs as noone will pay that much for him, but you've been going on as if United couldn't afford to spend £40m on him, that's clearly not true. They could spend substantially more if they wanted, they have the ability to sign him, which seems to be something you are denying

That's something very different to whether they actually will

1. There's a high likliehood De Gea has agreed to move. His change of agent appears to be the hold up.

2. How would Spurs know if we were interested. We are hardly likely to let them know we're considering a bid. Utd, like most clubs, seem to put feelers out to the player first.

3. Rumours of Utd being interested in Modric have been widespread for a long time.

SAF is a known admirer of the player.

I think there's interest there but no real expectation that we'll get him.

Muppets on parade, conduct a sing-a-long.

This thread reminds me on Berbatov 2008. Glaston with "there's no chance he will be sold" and all the wait for news.

Berbatov + £20m upfront and he's ours.

No way.

Tottenham players always look better than they are when they play for tottenham as they dont play under the same pressures as a top team. Modric will be another Berba / Carrick a decent addition to the squad but at a steap price. Lets just not buy from Tottenham.

So we should only buy from better teams than ourselves? can't see barca selling the likes of messi and iniesta to us if I am truthful.

Berbatov hasn't suited us, Carrick has been very good for the price we paid and Modric would be quality and better than what we currently have.

IMO Modcric is just not that good - he will be way overpriced and that money you could try prise Schweinsteiger away from Bayern -£35m plus who is a far far better player.

You have to consider the amounts quoted as its the opportunity costs that needs to be factored in.

he is not going to leave Munich though is he so doesn't matter, he had his chance to leave last summer and signed a long term contract because like a lot of German players has no desire to leave Germany.

Modric is very gifted and also would slot into our team very well i feel, not sure if we will go for him but we would be mad not to even consider him.

Luka Modric: "Chelsea are a big club with an ambitious owner. They have great players and they have ambitions to fight for the title and win the Champions League.I want to stay in London. I am very happy here and so are my family. I like the city."

Time to move to the Sneijder thread now.

Modric to Chelsea and Sanchez to City... If that were to happen, then I'd seriously start to worry about Valentino.

Let me leave! Modric bombshell as he admits he wants to join Chelsea

Luka Modric dropped a bombshell on Tottenham when he told Sportsmail he wants to leave White Hart Lane and sign for Chelsea.

The midfielder took the stunning decision to declare his reasons for wanting to join Chelsea, who are preparing a second offer for the Croat in the next 48 hours.

It is an action that will enrage his employers and Spurs supporters, but Modric says he wants to move to a club with ambitions of winning the Barclays Premier League title and is going public to force the issue.

Last night the 25-year-old spoke to Sportsmail from his holiday boat and said: ‘I want to leave Tottenham as friends. I have enjoyed my time there, but now it is right for me to look at another club.

'I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.’

A second Chelsea offer is due - and this time the price will rise from their opening £22million bid to closer to £30m.

And Modric said: ‘Chelsea are a big club with an ambitious owner. They have great players and they have ambitions to fight for the title and win the Champions League.

‘I want to stay in London. I am very happy here and so are my family. I like the city.’

The news will explain why Manchester City and Manchester United have been monitoring and talking, rather than formally bidding. They have clearly got wind of Modric’s desire to stay in London in the last 24 hours, which puts Chelsea in pole position.

‘I don’t want to have an argument with Tottenham,’ said Modric. ‘The supporters have been very good to me and I have enjoyed my time playing for the club, but it is for football that players leave clubs and move. It has happened to Tottenham before. It is normal for a player to dream about playing for a bigger club.’

Modric will speak to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about arranging the transfer but insists the desire to leave is not about money.

'If somebody comes to the club and the offer is good for me and acceptable to them, then I want to leave,’ he said. ‘It has to be good for my ambition. It has to be a club who are winning titles and playing in the Champions League.

‘This is not about money, it is about ambition. When I came to England, I was dreaming about winning titles. That is still the same.

‘Tottenham are a big club, with good players and a good manager, but I want to fight for the championship. Spurs will always have a place in my heart. My experiences in the Champions League have left me with the desire for more.’

When asked what happens next, Modric said: ‘I need to talk with the chairman. I won’t ask for a transfer, no. That would be disrespectful. I hope they can reach an agreement (with another club) that is satisfactory for everyone. I am on holiday, but I need to speak and to see if I can find a solution to this.’

Spurs fans will expect Levy to offer Modric a new contract and keep his word. The chairman has said that he will not allow the player to go, while manager Harry Redknapp described the original Chelsea offer as ‘ridiculous’.

So, good that he wants to leave, but bad that he doesn't want to leave London

So where does this leave us, then? Assuming he wants to go Chelsea and we can't get our hands on Mr. Wesley Sneijder?

Looking forward to Arry's response. He was adamant that Spurs were not going to sell Modric.

He'll be loving it, armed with £30m+ to wheel and deal (insert youtube here)
Plus, he can talk about god knows how many players he wants to buy

The proverbial pig in shit

I'm just hoping Glaston doesn't have any rope nearby.

Word out of Stamford Bridge is that Modric wants to sign for Chelsea. Spurs are resigned to it happening, but not till they have sold their season tickets. Fans had till the 22nd of May to renew them, and they are now being offered to the members. They expect there will be news on his arrival within the first 2 weeks of the window opening.

Was told that about three weeks ago by somebody with connections at Chelsea.

Looks like he might know what he was talking about.
