Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

The Croatia playmaker has made it clear that his preference this summer would be to leave White Hart Lane, with Chelsea and Manchester United reported to be keen on adding him to their ranks.

He has, however, been informed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that they have no intention of letting him leave, especially to a Premier League rival.
Has Blatter not read this yet? Surely time for some "slave" comments.

from caughtoffside.com:

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly preparing to make an offer for long term target Luka Modric and the Old Trafford boss is willing to offer two of his players as well as cash to tempt Tottenham into selling the Croatian international.
Man United have already spent over £50m this summer on the purchases of Blackburn Rovers youngster Phil Jones, Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and Spanish keeper David de Gea but Ferguson is very keen on bringing in Tottenham’s creative midfielder Modric and is hopeful he can beat the advances from Chelsea and Man City for the former Dynamo Zagreb man.
Modric has already publicly stated his intention to leave White Hart Lane and though Spurs boss Harry Redknapp does not want to lose such a crucial member of his starting line-up he may well feel he has no choice other than to get as good a deal as possible for the talented 25 year old.
Ferguson is willing to offer Redknapp former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov and Northen Irish international defender Jonny Evans as well as around £10-12m to help persuade the North London club to sell.

that be a crazy deal, modric not worth all this trouble....:wenger:

I could quite easily see Evans be used in some sort of package deal. They could use another defender, though coming off some disappointing seasons would give Tottenham cause to be wary. Still, the talent is undoubted and I think he'd slot right into their side from the get-go.

They don't really need Berbatov though since VDV plays a similar role. Unless of course they re-structure (which would be a big possibility if they do lose Modric) or at least push VDV back into the midfield.

Berbatov was at his best last season as the furthest forward. I'm sure he'd vastly improve their current attacking options and would be able to play in front of VDV like he did Rooney.

Berbatov isnt worth much given his age/contract. The deal would have good value in terms of what we need, because we can live without Evans and could cope with Berbatov leaving. Its most likely made up though

I'd be more than happy with that really. Berbas value is only going down from here, and Evens could go either way, but he's still going into this season as you've got to assume 5th choice in his favoured position.

Berbas value is around £12m, Evans £8m-ish I guess and then £12m....it's less than what we'd pay straight up. Even if it just a rumour, but both signings hugely help Spurs as well.

I agree that would be a good deal.

Don't believe it, though.

How often do these player swap rumors pan out?

Anything that isn't BBC's mainpage shouldn't be viewed as credible really, but it's always fun to discuss trash rumours.

We would be suffer if we lost Berbatov without replacing him. Hernandez is young and it's highly conceivable that he suffers from a second season syndrome. Even if he doesn't you're just looking at him and Rooney and then a huge drop in quality with Owen, Welbeck etc. Basically we would be far far worse off than last season.

And while we can deal with losing Evans he still is a very very talented young defender.

 Awful deal. The top scorer in the PL and one of the best players to come through or academy in years PLUS twelve million!

It's essentially a £30m deal which is fine, Berbatov is 30 and doesn't have much left at this level and Evans is basically a £10m defender at the moment. It's not an awful deal by any means, it's a decent one.

It's an awful deal. We've already lost two defenders, losing one more will leave us weaken in defence.

If he regains the form & there is nothing to say he won't that he showed in the season prior to last he'd be worth a hell of a lot more than £10m. I agree with KM losing another defender wouldn't be a good idea at all.

Berbatov is not an £8m player!

We can replace him with someone bought to be third choice, on lower wages and not for big money. It might not be easy to get such a player but look at Hernandez. We've done it before and Welbeck is a good player too

As for Evans, he's a good young defender but we have 2 others who are better and he was in poor form last season. And you never know, he might like to move to a club where he's going to get more oppertunities. Beats going to Sunderland like the rest

Berbatov & Evans + £12m... yeah right
Caughoffside are a fecking joke. That would be one of the worst deals ever. The Premier League top scorer + a capable player who can play all across the back-four and came through our ranks (not to mention the fact we're already down to eight recognised first-team defenders) and money for Modric? He is not fecking Iniesta.

I'd rather play the whole season with what we have in central midfield - good enough to win the league - than strike an awful deal like this with Spurs for a player who isn't even that good.

Berbatov is 30 and has a year on his contract. He's not worth much

De facto he has two years left on his contract; it's common knowledge we have an option to extend at the end of this year so nobody would be able to intimidate us with the threat of a Bosman. He had his best season ever last year and in my opinion (seeing that he has never been a fast player or a player that ran past defenders) he will suffer little depreciation in his effectiveness over the next few years. He is worth far more than £8mil, I'm surprised this is even up for debate.

Didn't The Berb threaten to go on strike while at Tottenham, because he wanted to move to United? Can't see Spurs wanting him back if that was the case.

On Saturday, Modric yet answered the call and agreed to tell his view of his current situation ...

- A lot has been published in the media from the meeting with President Levy, who is transferring to the public our meeting much more crooked. I keep my right to say an opinion about all this - he said Modric which we call found at the family dinner.

Levy twisted story

So what happened to the 40-minute get-together with the President of the Spurs?

- I must first say that I am sincerely disappointed with the way President Levy did communicate with me. He was waiting for me cold is pretty arrogant performance has given me the knowledge that you really do not care what I say to him. I do not know why they asked, but that's his thing. I was kind of approach only further convinced that no wrong in the decision to change the environment.

On the one hand, it is understood his problem when he ran low ponajboljeg Tottenham player and the best profession in the last Premier League.

- President I am reminded of our gentlemen's agreement of last summer when we were in Dubrovnik agreed a contract extension with Tottenham. Then I talked openly with Levy that in perspective, if a concrete offer of a large team, then we will consider the offer and negotiate the best solution for all of us. The President then said "OK, we'll sit and talk." Now Levy to co-opt, do not want to talk to and he told me in a raunchy way that there is no chance for me to leave Tottenham ...

What does this mean a raunchy way?

- He threatened me, if you do not accept that his club's stance, then they will send me on a bench or stand, and we talked about the option of other team Tottenham.

Think about Chelsea?

- There is no doubt that Chelsea is interested in my transfer, after they sent a concrete offer from Tottenham which means that I want. I know that the new Chelsea coach said he would like to see me in his team. Of course I am flattered that my interest in this club that offers what all players dream, but it is a fight for trophies on all fronts.

I hope the agreement

When you actually broke it after three seasons to go from Tottenham?

- When he first came to Chelsea's official offer, I felt that he came that moment. It's not me it was simply a break, not going to just like that. I talked a long time with his family and to the people whose opinions I hold, I thought, weighed, and finally realized that this epilogue was best for me and the club.

What if Levy does not let go?

- I have not thought about it at all because such a solution should definitely not be good for anyone. Again, I have already told the President last summer that would offer as in the case of Chelsea should find an agreement on mutual satisfaction. So I hope that you will eventually understand the situation and that we will achieve harmony and disperse in an appropriate manner.

Modri

Some of you are nutters! We've already lost O'shea, which I argued has left us short of fullback cover. The response was, "Evans can cover left back". Now you want to get rid! Maybe we are planning to play the twins on crutches next season?

Quite a few Croatians on GG, the one who posted it hasn't bothered translating but he says its legit and Modric is saying he wants to go to Chelsea again.

Shame really, I thought that would be the end of the situation. I still don't think Modric will kick up a Berbatov like fuss. For me, its not about the influence on the pitch, which I think we can cope with more than adequately but the message we send out by selling him.

Still, 35/40 million plus one of Drogba/Sturridge if they'd come sounds quite attractive at the moment.

Hmmm.. Interested to see how this one unfolds over the next few weeks.. Who else is with me when I say I would rather he stay on at Tottenham than join Chelsea.. I am sure those who have put a fair few quid on it too would rather pay up than see him at Chelsea..
