Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

"what if Modric puts in a Transfer Request.. What can Levy do?"

It's simple: he'll just say "request denied, now please close the office door on your way out".

Ultimately Modric can do nothing except refuse to train or play, in which case he'll be in obvious breach of contract and so won't get paid. How many weeks would he keep that up for? Not many, I'll warrant.

Modric will squeal and shout, but the window will close and he'll just accept that he's got no good option except to knuckle down and get on with playing as best he can.

As Mabbutt points out keeping unhappy players at clubs can be disruptive in the dressing room and no manager wants a player who doesn’t want to play for the club.

I bet Levy in fact promised Modric something vague like "Yes, you sign here and if an offer comes for you then we'll see."

/Edit: if it is impossible to "tie someone down" via a fixed contract in law, how would football teams be able to do it?

FIFA won't allow the transfer of a player's registration to another club under the FIFA umbrella without the approval of the club who own the contract. However, FIFA do have rules about what happens if a player really decides to leave and they're based on the principle that a player's career is short and you can't make them wait for years.

The basic position (I think this is still accurate) is that a player walking out is banned from playing for 4 months and the new club has to financially reimburse the previous employer - fee to be negotiated, ultimately through CAS. If the new club is deemed to be responsible for the breach of contract (aka tapping up) then they may face fines, and transfer bans.

In other words a player can walk - but they face a suspension and most clubs will hesitate to sign them.

No matter how it ends, the end result will not be a good news for Tottenham as a club. They either lose an important player or force him to stay and create a problem in the dressing room. The whole "keeping him on a bench" scenario is a pure fantasy. You can't afford to stick your best player on the bench,it'll have all kinds of negative consequences.

Club chairman fighting it out with the key player over who lied to who, the player questioning club's ambition and basically saying he wants to play for a better team, etc. The longer it goes on, the worse it's going to get for both parties involved. At some point you have to do the damage limitation and cut your losses. Levi should let CFC know he's willing to do business if they come back with a serious offer.

I realize Spurs don't want to be seen by players as a "stepping stone", but this is the reality. Unless the club is a permanent fixture in the CL season after season, wins or at least competes for trophies on a fairly regular basis and has enough money to improve and keep the squad competitive both in terms of transfer fees and wages, the best players will look to leave and join better teams. The window of opportunity for someone like Modric to win trophies and make big money is fairly small and there are no guarantees that a serious injury or loss of form wouldn't prevent him from getting the best possible deal at any point in the future.

That was the case when he signed 10 years long contract at Dinamo. He had agreement with Zdravko Mamic to let him go if there's offer that would benefit both him and Dinamo. Chelsea was first in line for his signature, but Mamic completely shocked Abramovic with his demands and deal fall through just for Tottenham to make a bid that was accepted by Dinamo. Since zdravko Mamic son Mario is his agent sure he tried to make similar deal with Levy.

A couple of general points on contracts-

FIFA won't help a club enforce contracts beyond 5 years - the 6 year contracts we hear about are about money (usually being loaded to pay a bonus if you stay for the duration).

"Sit him on the bench," - makes for a great headline and a rousing cheer from the fans, but is not a real option. Indeed, if threatened and carried out, then it's probably a breach of contract by the club - a form of constructive dismissal. In which case the player can probably walk out of the contract without a FIFA ban.

The gentleman's agreement was that he could go if it benefited the team and player. Obviously, it doesn't benefit Tottenham at all to let him go and although we have seen huge sums of money linked with Modric, if indeed the newer ones 20-22 are to be believed, Spurs deserve to earn more off his sale.

Saying that, I hope Spurs have learned that dragging out a transfer until the last second, screws over the team (Berbatov). Get it over with now and find a replacement.

Breaking News on SSN is that Chelsea will bid for Modric again tonight

Who could replace Modric in that team?

I think most players are professional enough to play weell enough through contract negotiations.

Chelsea have made an improved bid of 27Mil for Modric according to Telegraph.

They aren't going to get anywhere with offers below £30m.

I like how everytime Chelsea make a bid, the SSN/Media get to know of it pretty quickly.

Interesting stuff antihenry!

Especially the "stepping stone...is a reality" comments. I remember a time not long ago when a club called Chelsea was seen as a "stepping stone". Time's goes by and with a Russian gangster as a sugar daddy it's easy to offer opinions to a less fortunate rival.

No matter how much you all want to believe it, Levy isn't an idiot and knows full well that forcing Modric to stay isn't going to be good for the club. However, I would take exactly the same stance as Levy considering the piss-taking bids Chelsea have been offering to unsettle Modric. He's definitely going, Levy's just playing hard ball (and rightly so) to get a big price for him.

Maybe we should put in a quiet bid and they'll sell him to us instead, just to spite Chelsea.

TBF on the paper, Chelsea have not done anything wrong. Behind the scenes, they may have tapped Modric up but that is standard practice for every club.

Spurs holds all the cards here, and they can get £40m for him. Modric shouldn't have signed a new contract.

The cards Spurs hold

- Sit Modric out in the stands.

Spurs lose one of their best players, cant afford to bring in a new player to adequately replace him, he poisons the dressing room with negativity as this situation carries on for at least a season and their other better players wonder if they're at the right club either and if their chairman is going to treat them the same when they want to leave

- Sell the player.

The player has specified the club he wants to join and the area he'd like to stay in. If this club dont want to pay much more than they have already offered, Spurs will have to accept that or the first scenario.

Which is more beneficial for Spurs moving forward? Its pretty clear. Get rid of him, find a replacement that costs less than they get for him and actually wants to be there.

I get that Spurs want to keep their best players and try to send out the message they are a big club. But it simply doesnt work if the players dont actually want to be there. Its more important that the group of players are a good unit who work together and are happy in their situation. Thats what brought Spurs to the dance and got them into the champions league in the first place. Not keeping unhappy players like Berbatov. They only got to the next level once they got rid of him and had a positive camp again

So what's your point? There are players that would snub CFC to join Real or Barca and I would have no problem admitting that, too.

Ronaldo looked at United as a stepping stone before going to Real, and so did Robben when at Chelsea. There's always some other club that is bigger or more prestigious or more likely to win trophies at the moment. Russian gangster or not, Chelsea is a more attractive option than Tottenham for a footballer right now. It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Shocking news- Harry Redknapp will be giving an interview to SSN regarding Modric's future.

Harry has now changed his tune during his interview on Sky.

Basically 22 Million is not enough, and it's up to the Levy if he's sold. Inviting Chelsea to up their offer. Deal done if Chelsea pay up.
