Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

There were a few of us caftards on here who thought Modric would be ace, yet none of them got the Scholesy treatment so Ekeke is kinda right.

I always said he would be better on the left because he was too weak and didn't have enough discipline to hold a 2 man midfield. In a way I feel I was right because he's games changed alot since he first arrived which is why his best performance for Spurs in his early time came on the left. However he seems to be more cultured in the middle now and you see him timing his forward runs better.

I think he would be ace in the current Giggs role next to Carrick.

I had the same opinion. Always looked classy but a bit light-weight. He's come on a lot though. Tidy little player. Too good for Spurs.

What I liked today was his tackling and defensive work. He's really good for a player of his size and style when it comes to the defensive part of his job

Very responsible and solid enough defensively. Thats whats impressed me with him in the last few matches. However my concern would be that when a powerful player is running at him, said player can probably run straight through him. Ivanovic did that once in the second half

Well no, you were wrong. Obviously his best performances in his early days came on the left but that's because he only played there! Spurs improvement since he's played cm has been vast.

Because when they put him in the centre he was overran. Harry took over and switched him straight back to the left untill mid last season when he got put back in the centre. He had plently of playing time in the centre when he first arrived.

You don't think Spurs were lacking in players who could hold at the time? Palacios isn't really a specialist dm.

Whats that got to do with Modric??

But to answer your question have you ever seen a DM and an AM play together and it has worked? Normally there is a third man in the midfield giving the extra legs.

But that was not my point.

Im saying modric could play in a 2 man cm, you know when his partner is actually good the other way? spurs' defence wasn't as good as it is now and they were getting overran by teams anyway. There's plenty of examples of an attacking mid playing with a defensive in a two. Arsenal did it in 08 with fabregas and flamini, because the latter was good at holding.

 Creative yes!! Attacking in the sense of a Gerrard or Lampard don't think so. Regardless of what there defence was like because in my books all they have brought recently is Bassong and Gallas. He is a much better CM now than he was then. End of story.

So are all Spurs midfielders who will partner him, and all the wingers/wide midfielders. And now he has someone to link with in the hole, VDV.

Its not just Modric who has improved, most of Spurs players have and so has their squad and team. And we dont know how Modric of old would have done next to current day Bale, Huddlestone and Lennon - all better than they were then.

I thought Modric was great for the first hour but he went missing when Spurs really needed him in the closing stages.

I thought he was very impressive in his holding and ball winning and as normal did well with his ball retention but did little to hurt Chelsea.

I agree, and i believe that his failure to hurt Chelsea is more down to Spurs being quite immobile and lacking a bit of quality movement up front rather than Modric's inability to hurt opponents.

When he carries the ball into an opponents half there is very few runs being made that stretch defences and open space for him. Only Defoe is really effective at this and he has been strangely out of form this season.

Modric works hard, is very mobile and excellent at retaining possession, but i don't believe he is anywhere as effective going forward for Spurs as he could be for us, simply due to the added dynamism and movement of our front 2, as well as our wingers. Would you agree?

Now Spurs look unlikely to make the CL, it could knock a few quid off the asking price, if we're interested.

I think Modric, like most midfielders at lesser clubs, would look better going forwards at United. How much better though who knows. To do so significantly better it would require a change of mentality and for some players thats a bridge too far.

He wasn't such a popular choice back then. No, Palacios was the player from Spurs many wanted us to sign. I have always maintained that he is awful.

Also, I was a fan of Sandro early in the season, and now he is playing very well.

I am never wrong when it comes to judging a player's talent.

You would think so, but i doubt it with Levy. He will probably take out his frustration at not reaching the CL on anybody who tries to plunder his best players.

This is my concern with Modric, he is good but is he really worth £30m? I personally would rather offer £40m for Fabregas, than £30m on Modric.

Sahin would probably be a much cheaper option than Modric and again imo i believe Sahin would probably be a more complete player to fit into our 4-4-2 than Modric.

Not that i am suggesting Modric couldn't play effectively in our 4-4-2, i think he could, but considering the potential cost of the 2 players, Sahin would probably imo be a better all round option.

Palacios wasnt awful when he signed for Spurs. But he wasnt the DM that Spurs tried to turn him into either. For a spell he did very well in that role

The bolded part is hilarious

You haven't earned the right to make arrogant statements like that.

Two things, Fabregas would never come to United, and whoever buys will pay more than 40 million.

By early in the season you mean after his game against Milan in February? You'd not made any posts on him up until then, and given how fond you are of your own opinion and ability to spot talent that seems a bit strange...

There were people talking up the Sandro signing before he'd even played for Spurs but you don't hear them bragging about it you gimp.

Whoa. Calm down.

I've really liked the way the Giggs/Carrick partnership works, Giggs making the runs beyond play when Rooney drops deep to offer us an option either for goals or assists in the final third. I am not sure Modric would provide that same dynamic.

How long do you think that partnership is going to last?

Obviously not much longer, but what I was getting at is I'd like us to buy a player who can play the role Giggs is playing now for us, and I'm not sure Modric is that type.

There arent really any well known CMs that play like Giggs. Anderson is about as close as any of the others.

Modric got forwards a lot more when I saw him play for Croatia than he does for Spurs. It's good that he can be disciplined but I think there is more to his game offensively.

On the Giggs-Carrick thing, am I right in saying we've always had Nani on the bench with Park and Valencia on the flanks when we've played this? I think it requires two wingers who will be compact and help win the ball. With a Modric-type of player in place of Giggs it would give more freedom to the front 4.

He is good enough and improving. Certainly wouldn't look out of place at United.

I found myself thinking the exact same thing while watching him play Chelsea. The way he can take players on and dribble with the ball, play quick passes around and control his team around, he really has become a great central midfielder.

He's almost like a combination of Giggs and Scholes these days. Not as good as either at their strengths (dribbling and attacking passes for Giggs, general passing ability for Scholes), but he has a good combination of skills that makes him very effective.

He can still be a little open in defence though. That incident where Chelsea should've won a penalty, Modric had been just slowly jogging back while the player he should've been covering ran through with the ball and caused the defence to panic. A few other times he got caught out as well. But then, so do Giggs and Scholes so it won't be any weaker.

I thought he was very impressive in his holding and ball winning and as normal did well with his ball retention but did little to hurt Chelsea.

I agree but with Pav/Defoe being shit, Bale and Lennon being shit, VDV letting the game pass him by it would've been really difficult for him to hurt Chelsea.
