Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Well no, you were wrong. Obviously his best performances in his early days came on the left but that's because he only played there! Spurs improvement since he's played cm has been vast.
Spot on. He was always good enough to play CM. He proved that whislt playing for Croatia. For Spurs it was always a matter of when not if he was going to be given a prominent role in the center.

Have you ever been wrong Chief ? Most of the time you're in a "I told you so" mode
Of course I've ever been wrong. I mean, I'm Mr ''Bellion is the new Henry'', Djemba Djemba and Kleberson will be stars here, Dong will succeed, Mikel is the new Cantona, Essien = Steven
Gerard and my personal favorites, Sergio Ramos for Keane's replacement and Liam miller is potentially a mixture of Scholes and Keane. That is just for starters:D

I always said he would be better on the left because he was too weak and didn't have enough discipline to hold a 2 man midfield. In a way I feel I was right because he's games changed alot since he first arrived which is why his best performance for Spurs in his early time came on the left. However he seems to be more cultured in the middle now and you see him timing his forward runs better.
Fair enough. For me personally I have little doubt it was because he was getting sued to the pace of EPL football. Because for Croatia he was doing in CM everything he is doing for Spurs now. It's what made me him stand out for me the first time I saw him play a big European side internationally.

Obviously not much longer, but what I was getting at is I'd like us to buy a player who can play the role Giggs is playing now for us, and I'm not sure Modric is that type.

It's more likely we'll have to adapt our system slightly than find a like for like replacement for Giggs.

Hasn't he recently stated that he would not see any reason to move away from Spurs as he is very happy there.. Those words may have been spoken before their woeful PL form which has all but removed their chances to return to the CL..

I can't think of a CM who we should rather get..

Not taking the piss here Chief as you are someone who always makes a prediction on a player and that can go one of two ways, sometimes positive(e.g. Fletcher,Nani, Evra, Vidic, Anderson, Ronaldo, etc) but how in the blue hell did you ever equate Mikel with Cantona and Ramos as Keane's replacement? The rest are understandable with context.

Everyone makes mistakes, can't hold them for it as long as they own up. I said Giggs should retire 3 years ago.

Modric is a fiddy fiddy for me, he'll cost just such a gargantuan amount.

Well before Chelsea fecked Mikel up he was a natural playmaker who played in the hole. Even at the world youth championship in which he and Mesai were named player of the tournament, he was operating in the Cantona role.

The Ramos story is the funny one though. The first full match I saw him play for Sevilla, sans commentary, he spent so much time attacking and wining the ball in the center of the field I thought he was an amazing midfielder and rushed to post about him on here. Watching him again more times I still thought he was a Keane in the making. I was later to find out that he was a defender playing in central defence. The embarrassment epic.

The only never making mistakes in here is me.........:nervous::D

I don't know if it was mentioned before but did any of you know that SAF was asked who he would nominate for Player of the Year and he replied "Not Bale, Not Parker, Luka Modric" or something like that?

feck! I so hope we get him.. However unlikely it is.. He would be PERFECT for us..

Modric is probably the best fit for our midfield amongst players we would be able to sign. He has adapted to the English game, has great creativity and he works fairly hard. I watched him against the Dippers on Sunday and his work rate and overall contribution was pretty good.

Berbatov for Modric swap deal on the cards IMO.

They wouldn't have Berbatov back

Berbatov + £20m i suspect Levy would demand, or £35m cash. Player + cash deals hardly ever come off, as i have been suitably reminded for suggesting a similar idea with Carrick or Berbatov + cash for Modric earlier in another thread.

I cannot see us paying that much cash on 1 player, especially considering we are signing a keeper too. A player plus cash deal seems logical but whether it will happen 'only god knows'. :)

We might if we're goping to offset the bill by offloading a player or two...which I suspect will be the case if we want Modric

Eh? they wouldn't take back the Premier League top scorer who was a massive success whilst he was there? Are you sure?

This is the club that took back both Defoe and Keane.

Was just about to mention Keane, he was clearly a player in freefall and yet Spurs were willing to fork out his £75,000 a week wage-packet.

Don't think wages would be an issue.

And em, there is the matter of would Berbatov want to go back, he could easily get another team in Europe that is actually capable of winning some silverware.

If he did want to leave, he'd go back to Germany I feel

I was thinking more that he burned his bridges by angling for the move in the first place.

Burned his bridges with who? the fans?

As Rooney has proven, it only takes a few goals to fix that. The thoughts of the fans wouldn't come into it, if Arry decides he wants more quality up front then Berbatov has already shown that he's a perfect fit at Tottenham.

What is this strange obsession people have with swap deals?

In almost a quarter of a century in charge of United, I'm fairly sure Fergie has never got involved in a deal like that yet, every summer, there's hundreds of suggestions of why we will swap player A for "player B + cash" (or vice versa) It ain't gonna happen.

Fraser Campbell, cash + loan :D

As soon as I read anything with a 'swap deal' involved I know it's completely made up.

I agree but in this instance it might just happen. Spurs are desperate for goals and Berbatov suited their style. He is the league top scorer and still only 30. I think his contract expires next summer so he is technically a free agent in January as a 31 year old. Will he sign another contract at United to be a bench warmer?

On the other side of the deal United have a huge need with Scholes retiring soon and SAF covets Modric. I am sure Berbatovs age and pending status next summer could be factored into the deal to allow Spurs to work out his wages.

Gillispe and Cash for Andy Cole.

Cash + Gillespie for Cole
Cash + Pugh for Smith
Cash + McShane and Steele for Kuzczask

The only deal including a potential top class player was the Cole transfer, but Gillespie never reached that tier.

I do doubt any swap inclusions will occur this summer.

I remember Harry Redknapp saying that Fergie has said to him 'Modric would get into any team in the world.' He's clearly an admirer.

Question is, can/will we pay the required 40m to sign him?

If you think it would cost any less, you are out of touch with the reality of the modern transfer market.

Andy Cole = Cash + Gillespie.

Jesus christ we get it, you think you've got a better idea of transfer values than most others on here...telling people over and over and over again doesn't really achieve anything.

Has anyone mentioned that we gave cash plus Gillespie for Cole?

And the history of United's recent deals with Spurs.

Yeah would love to see Modric at United but Daniel Levy is such a dick when it comes to extracting maximum money from potential buyers. He thought he was such a smart arse getting £30m from us for Berbatov but his procrastination in his own buying meant he didn't procure a top class striker the last two transfer windows - to Spurs' detriment in not qualifying for next year's Champions League.

To that end, IF Fergie wanted Modric, god knows how much he would cost!
