Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

It was also very late in the day for them to have to deal with losing their main attacker and trying to organise a replacement. So they wanted a heck of a deal for that inconvenience

Glastonspur, you should have worked out by now that you can make yourself look very stupid by being absolute in your positions.
To adapt someone else's recent post ....

Many ageing players 30 or older - Lampard, Malouda, Terry, Drogba, Anelka, Ferreira, Benayoun and Cole. A semi-crocked Essien.

And no Modric. Taarabt to Chelsea in his stead.

Happy summer Brian.

Both cases were daylight robbery imo.

You fleeced Chelsea, Torres 50million!! You did a cracking deal with that

But then Newcastle saw you coming a mile off and you forked out 35million on a player who is no more than a 15million target. He'll stay at the club for a long time, but is he worth that amount of money? feck no.

I think Newcastles argument would have been that they may get relegated if they sold him and so a large amount of money would be compensation incase that did occur.

Yeah spot on man!

The gift that keeps on giving.

I am not going to predict what happens this summer and I am certainly not going to make decrees that 'this' will happen and 'that' will happen as you seem to be.

With regard to Chelsea's squad, it is better than yours and we're able to spend far, far more than you can or yours, to improve it.

I'm having a hard time believing that you are as confident as you are trying to come across on here. Bear in mind, nobody is talking about Gareth Bale because it seems extremely unlikely that he'll move on this summer.

This Modric situation has all the markings of a transfer in the making, with Spurs naturally making all the noises they're supposed to make to maximise value.

The difference being, of course, that Spurs stand on their own two feet, whilst Chelski are kept propped-up by a sugar-daddy and would otherwise collapse, drowning in a sea of plastic and toxic debt.

50m for Modric?

Fabregas who is miles better than Modric will only go for 40m max

No No No

Please No. We have been fleeced by Tottenham enough its time Chelsea got fleeced.

Prices are always inflated in London. Last summer people suggested Cesc was worth £50m+.

So what do you suggest we do? Go into next season with Giggs and Carrick?

I am sure SAF has his eyes on more than just Modric. How much difference would he have made against Barca? little.

SAF needs to and will spend his money wisely than splurge it on one player.

Modric alone won't solve our midfield problems. And i thought he looked quite out of his depth when Spurs played Madrid in the quarters

Arguable. And what could he basically offer in a United shirt that night at Wembley?

He's have certainly retained possesion a hell of a lot more than our midfielders did that night. Modric rarely wastes possesion.

If you get the ball off Barca you need to keep it, at least for more than 3 seconds.

We had Giggs to do that and he couldn't with all his experience

One guy can only retain possesson if he doesnt pass it ;)

I get where you are coming from but this needs to be team wide. We need a lot more than Modric to take on Barca midfield and spending upwards of £35m on Modric is in my opinion wasted.

I would rather we spend the money on 2/3 talented youngsters we can mould than spend it on an overpriced Modric.

Forget Barcelona, for heaven's sake. Our number one concern should be preserving our dominant status in England. We need better ball retention and more creativity from midfield.

There's no available midfielder out there who would, on his own, make an instant difference to that night in Wembley. Next time we'll have to play all of our "destroyers" (Carrick, Fletcher, Jones - everyone who knows something about defending in midfield) and forget about Hernández. But not signing Modric just because he wouldn't improve our chances against Barcelona that much would be stupid.

First things first you need to calm down a bit, secondly the sourcing of Chelsea's wealth is not relevant in the context of spending it. The only way Tottenham is going to afford spending £22million on one player is if someone pays you £22million, otherwise you are going to have to get used to the ilk of Peter 'I am too good for the England bench' Crouch for many years more.

It isn't often I agree with Glaston, in fact I never have.:smirk:

The only thing righteous that I have seen at Chelsea recently was Ancelotti, but the Russian gangster shat all over him.

According to sources inside Spurs it will take a world record bid for them to sell Modric i.e. £80m

Their official stance is that he's not for sale

Former Manchester United favourite Gary Pallister has leant his support to the calls suggesting the Barclays Premier League champions should launch a summer move for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

Chelsea reportedly had an offer of £22 million rejected for the Croatia international on Wednesday, with the Daily Mail suggesting Spurs value the 25-year-old at upwards of £30 million.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has slammed the Blues' offer as 'ridiculous', while the west Londoner's early move for Modric could hasten United into action.

Modric is allegedly on Sir Alex Ferguson's shortlist of candidates to replace the recently retired Paul Scholes, while Pallister believes the fleet-footed playmaker would be the 'ideal replacement' for the Old Trafford legend.

"There seems to be an impending feeling that Modric is going to move and for me he would be an ideal replacement for Scholes," said Pallister.

"The imagination and vision he brings to the midfield makes him a target. He can also score wonderful goals as well, which is part of Scholes' make-up.

"He maybe doesn't tackle as ferociously as he does but he is a terrific talent.

"I'm sure there are a host of clubs who would love to sign him and I'm sure Harry would love to keep him."

Also touted as potential successor to Scholes is Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder, with the Daily Star today reporting that the Dutchman could be available to United for around £35 million.

However, a priority for United still remains the acquisition of a new goalkeeper to fill the void left by Edwin Van der Sar, who opted to hang up his gloves at the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid youngster David De Gea is seemingly set to seal a move to Old Trafford, and is expected to put pun to paper after the under-21 European Championships.

Wishful thinking I'm afraid.

It was widely reported that Spurs bid much more than this for at least one single player back in January. Of course the reports may not have been true - I don't know, but neither can you know that they weren't true.

More importantly, and as I've said in this thread already, Spurs will shortly be posting record annual income results. At a rough guess I'd say these will show an increase of between 40 and 50m. Then we have a whole raft of fringe players to sell for anything up to 35 - 40m combined total - O'Hara (for just one example) has gone to Wolves for around 5m and this will be announced shortly.

All in all I've no doubt that, should Levy choose to sanction it, Spurs could easily afford to spend 30m+ on a single player this summer.

More importantly still, Spurs don't necessarily need to spend 22m (or whatever) on a single player in order to make quality signings that, not too long thereafter, become coveted by sundry other clubs.

The signing of Modric for 16.5m proves this. As does Bale for 9m and VdV for 9m. And it's quite likely IMO that Sandro for 8m and Walker for 5m will soon provide further evidence in the same vein.

The fact is that Spurs - despite the odd failed gamble (like all clubs) - generally have an excellent track record for making very good signings at bargain prices. Lennon for 1m, Huddlestone for 2.5m, Dawson for 3.5 (etc etc) weren't exactly bad deals either.

So I'm content for you to carry on boasting about Chelski's sugar-daddy spending power and to continue to spunk 31m (the price 5 years ago) on the likes of Shevchenko.

Such spending power won't get you Modric. So I'd try lowering your sights a notch or three: as I said earlier, Taarabt is eager to join. Or failing that, get a better scouting system/transfer negotiating team ... it might just save you a few tens of millions and thus fund an extra mega-yacht to add to the fleet of Chelski's head honcho.

Yet again it seems I'm mystified to why Glaston gets so much stick. He's talking a lot of sense in this thread.
Some of it stems from the spoilt nature - and often unwarranted and complacent arrogance - of some posters.

Like frustrated toddlers at Xmas, they don't like being told that they can't have - or that their parents can't afford (take your pick) - the latest shiny new toy that they WANT WANT WANT.

Remember that poster Scholesey ? the one who has a rep for being an oddball and general Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime around these parts.

well he was advocating the signing of Modric over 3yrs ago, and how ye laughed...

I don't think Modric suits Chelsea's style really.

To be fair Glaston does try to make out that Spurs are better than they actually are a lot of the time but you can't exactly blame him, it's his team. But in the cold light of day, Spurs haven't won a trophy of any significance for a very long time. Couple this with an ageing stadium, poor defence and no Champions League football and it can be tad annoying for Cafites who know their footy. Same goes for when Peter Storey spouts his "Arsenal are better than 70s Brazil" bollocks.

What does White Hart Lane have to do with it? It's not the nicest ground in the world, but who cares?

Also, every trophy is significant. This is arrogance from spoilt United fans, sadly. I'd love a Carling Cup right now.
