It was also very late in the day for them to have to deal with losing their main attacker and trying to organise a replacement. So they wanted a heck of a deal for that inconvenience
To adapt someone else's recent post ....Glastonspur, you should have worked out by now that you can make yourself look very stupid by being absolute in your positions.
Both cases were daylight robbery imo.
You fleeced Chelsea, Torres 50million!! You did a cracking deal with that
But then Newcastle saw you coming a mile off and you forked out 35million on a player who is no more than a 15million target. He'll stay at the club for a long time, but is he worth that amount of money? feck no.
I think Newcastles argument would have been that they may get relegated if they sold him and so a large amount of money would be compensation incase that did occur.

To adapt someone else's recent post ....
Many ageing players 30 or older - Lampard, Malouda, Terry, Drogba, Anelka, Ferreira, Benayoun and Cole. A semi-crocked Essien.
And no Modric. Taarabt to Chelsea in his stead.
Happy summer Brian.
I'm having a hard time believing that you are as confident as you are trying to come across on here. Bear in mind, nobody is talking about Gareth Bale because it seems extremely unlikely that he'll move on this summer. To adapt someone else's recent post ....

The difference being, of course, that Spurs stand on their own two feet, whilst Chelski are kept propped-up by a sugar-daddy and would otherwise collapse, drowning in a sea of plastic and toxic debt..... we're able to spend far, far more than you can ...

No No No
Please No. We have been fleeced by Tottenham enough its time Chelsea got fleeced.
So what do you suggest we do? Go into next season with Giggs and Carrick?
Modric alone won't solve our midfield problems. And i thought he looked quite out of his depth when Spurs played Madrid in the quarters
He was playing in an average team though. It would be a different story if he was in a United shirt.
Arguable. And what could he basically offer in a United shirt that night at Wembley?
He's have certainly retained possesion a hell of a lot more than our midfielders did that night. Modric rarely wastes possesion.
If you get the ball off Barca you need to keep it, at least for more than 3 seconds.

We had Giggs to do that and he couldn't with all his experience

First things first you need to calm down a bit, secondly the sourcing of Chelsea's wealth is not relevant in the context of spending it. The only way Tottenham is going to afford spending £22million on one player is if someone pays you £22million, otherwise you are going to have to get used to the ilk of Peter 'I am too good for the England bench' Crouch for many years more.
According to sources inside Spurs it will take a world record bid for them to sell Modric i.e. £80m
Their official stance is that he's not for sale
Chelsea will walk in and offer a silly amount, say 40million odd and he'll be off with Levy rubbing his hands in delight.
Former Manchester United favourite Gary Pallister has leant his support to the calls suggesting the Barclays Premier League champions should launch a summer move for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.
Chelsea reportedly had an offer of £22 million rejected for the Croatia international on Wednesday, with the Daily Mail suggesting Spurs value the 25-year-old at upwards of £30 million.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has slammed the Blues' offer as 'ridiculous', while the west Londoner's early move for Modric could hasten United into action.
Modric is allegedly on Sir Alex Ferguson's shortlist of candidates to replace the recently retired Paul Scholes, while Pallister believes the fleet-footed playmaker would be the 'ideal replacement' for the Old Trafford legend.
"There seems to be an impending feeling that Modric is going to move and for me he would be an ideal replacement for Scholes," said Pallister.
"The imagination and vision he brings to the midfield makes him a target. He can also score wonderful goals as well, which is part of Scholes' make-up.
"He maybe doesn't tackle as ferociously as he does but he is a terrific talent.
"I'm sure there are a host of clubs who would love to sign him and I'm sure Harry would love to keep him."
Also touted as potential successor to Scholes is Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder, with the Daily Star today reporting that the Dutchman could be available to United for around £35 million.
However, a priority for United still remains the acquisition of a new goalkeeper to fill the void left by Edwin Van der Sar, who opted to hang up his gloves at the end of the season.
Atletico Madrid youngster David De Gea is seemingly set to seal a move to Old Trafford, and is expected to put pun to paper after the under-21 European Championships.

Some of it stems from the spoilt nature - and often unwarranted and complacent arrogance - of some posters.Yet again it seems I'm mystified to why Glaston gets so much stick. He's talking a lot of sense in this thread.
Remember that poster Scholsey ? the one who has a rep for being an oddball and general Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime around these parts.
well he was advocating the signing of Modric over 3yrs ago, and how ye laughed...
Even a stopped clock tell the right time twice a day.
To be fair Glaston does try to make out that Spurs are better than they actually are a lot of the time but you can't exactly blame him, it's his team. But in the cold light of day, Spurs haven't won a trophy of any significance for a very long time. Couple this with an ageing stadium, poor defence and no Champions League football and it can be tad annoying for Cafites who know their footy. Same goes for when Peter Storey spouts his "Arsenal are better than 70s Brazil" bollocks.
