Manchester City vs. Manchester United

Don't know why so many have Rafael in, Sir Alex has already said he's worried about City in the air, so it will be Jones or Smalling at RB.

I suspect the only reason he made that worry public is to let Rafael down gently, master of man-management that he is.

I genuinely have no idea of a) what team will get picked or b) even what our best team would be.

I would be shocked if Scholes does not get a start, especially if ClEverley and Anderson are both out injured. With that, I would expect Scholes to need some protection due to his stamina issues. I cannot see Rooney being dropped that deep to protect Scholes, although be might be played in a deeper role instead of starting Scholes! I would be tempted to go a lot more experimental based on some of the performances this season as my belief is that the majority of times this seasons, we have been let down by the more experienced players.

I'd go with:
De Gea

Rafael
Smalling
Evans
Evra

Jones
Carrick
Fletcher

Rooney
RVP
Young.

* I very much doubt this will be even close to the line-up but I'd rather see us play this than an XI of experienced players who have let us down on more than one occasion this season already

Ah so in the space of a week before the derby we lose Anderon and Cleverley. Brilliant. So it's confirmed then one of Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Jones (in midfield) will start.

Why the fcuk do our players keep getting injured........

RvP
Young - Rooney - Rafael

Evra - Evans - Ferdinand - Jones
DDG

Assuming that Cleverley, Anderson, Valencia, Nani, Kagawa etc are all out, I'd opt for this.

Really not very encouraging reading. In 10 years we've managed to score more than 1 goal there just once, and that was before they even came in to money.

So basically whoever scores the first goal will win it (judging by the last 5 or so games in the league v them)... Not looking good for us then, considering we go behind in pretty much every game these days
If we manage to win this than I think it would take a massive feck up by us (last season standards) to lose out on the title. 6 point lead and having to play all the big teams at Old Trafford in the second half of the season.

Players owe Sir Alex a result.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

The players owe themselves, SAF and less importantly the fans a result. If not a big one they owe 90 minutes of switched on footy.

If Silva plays then Evra and Rafael will have to have a good game because they will not likely get much protection from midfield.

If Silva doesn't play I have a feeling Mancini will play Nasri and attempt to keep it tight for him to feed whoever plays up front and that will play into our hands.

Big game, looking forward to it. I hope Fergie polishes off his big bollocks and lays them down in this game. A result here will be absolutely massive and there is plenty of time to make up the required points before the return game at OT. The timing of the clash and the way the table reads 'has lets go out and fecking stuff these cnuts' written all over it.

SAF owes it to the players to play them in their natural positions, instead of fecking them around. No Rooney on the right wing, no Jones as an attacking midfielder, no Welbeck as a left winger. No goalkeeping rotations. Oh and no 4-4-2. Just stop it.

We need some height to fight against their set-pieces and thus think Smalling should be starting.. But who do you take out? Evans would be my choice but when is the last time Rio and Phil Lynott played together in a tough game and the reason wasn't injuries??

Wazza needs to excel and we need Young(i think starts 100%) to play his best game yet for us on Sunday..

Touché.

I don't want to be negative bastard but this one smells like a proper trouncing, sorry to say.

i am hoping we can get a draw. Don't see us beating them away TBH, not the way we've been playing recently. I'd like to see:
--------DDG---------
Rafael-Rio-Evans-Evra
----Carrick-Fletch----
Young-Rooney-Welbeck
---------RvP---------

I know Welbeck doesn't seem like a great option, but i think we can damage City on the wings, but we have no other options. Then we have Carrick and Fletch to battle with their midfielders in central areas (when they tend to be most dangerous) and Rooney to provide a bit of creativity. I am not feeling ver optimistic about this one, but thei is United so who knows.

I feel the same unfortunately. Them comfortably doing the double over us last season, their home record, our inability to defend, Giggs or Scholes possibly starting in midfield. I'm struggling to find positives.

The fact that we've won away at Stamford Bridge and Anfield this season gives me a small bit of hope. Not much though.

Wow, so the last six ecounters at Etihad had only one goal (or less) each. Wonder what odds I get on City to win 1-0 :wenger:

This is what I had in mind but with Jones in for Fletcher.

Hope we can replicate the first half hour at Chelsea which IMO was our best football of the season so far. Keeping my fingers crossed that Rooney and RVP can make the difference, again.

Not many people are going to agree with this but with Cleverly and Anderson both injured I would play Jones in the midfield with Carrick. We would need some mobility in the middle and the neither of the trio of Giggs, Scholes and Fletcher can provide it. Jones passing can't be any worse than Fletcher's at the moment. We'll need to run a lot in this game as City's zombies would be up for this one. Small teams usually do when playing bigger clubs. Jones would help us neutralize the threat posed by Yaya.

This line-up should do the job:

DeGea
Smalling Evans Ferdinand Evra
Carrick Jones
Rafael Rooney Young
RVP

Subs: Lindegaard, Vidic, Kagawa, Scholes, Hernandez, Welbeck, Valencia

No Vidic, Kagawa, Anderson, Cleverley, Valencia or Nani, all of them are arguably in our best XI.

Last year we started De Gea, Jones, Rio, Smalling, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Park, Nani and Rooney.

Too defensive. Don't need the extra height (Smalling) if we are gonna play Jones in CM. Bring in Welbeck on the wings intead.

I don't think this is too defensive. Rafael is playing on the wings as an attacking player not a wingback. Also, this is not a world where Jones is a superb DM but is instead used as a box to box player, like he played with Carrick last season.

Could be something like this.

----------Keeper---------
Rafa---Evans---Rio---Evra

-------Carrick-Jones------

--RvP----Rooney--Young

-------Welbeck/Chicha----

If Arsenal can get a result there then so can we. As long as City don't get anymore dodgey pens, which has helped them no end the last month or so. & as poor as we were last night, City were worse against Dortmund and actually had something to play for. They're there for the taking.

Really not very encouraging reading. In 10 years we've managed to score more than 1 goal there just once, and that was before they even came in to money.

And in 5 years they have not managed to score more than one goal against us on their home turf, after they have come into money.

I think there is no chance Fergie will play this team though. I think he trusts one of Giggs/Scholes to start.

Park the bus. Hope for a point. Pray we nick it.
End up disappointed, level on points but behind on GD.

Its happened before.

With what Fergie has just said, this definitely seems to be what the gameplan will be.

@AdamSMarshall: Sir Alex: "We need to come out unscathed and, with so much at stake, I wonder if there will be a little bit of caution from both clubs"

Don't know why so many have Rafael in, Sir Alex has already said he's worried about City in the air, so it will be Jones or Smalling at RB.

Why was rafael rested last night? He'll play I'm sure of it!

It's always a boring as feck game at their ground with few goals (except for the few times when they smashed us). We're normally shite like we are at Liverpool, but we nick our fair share of results still. I fancy a draw as we're due one, but City are due a loss in the league so we just need to attack them and keep the pressure on. Midfield is a worry though!

I don't understand why Sir Alex played so much 'respect' to Galastasaray and Cluj. Galatasaray are a professional outfit and they knew they needed to win to be sure, they were always going to go for that regardless. Any team in a position of needing to win their last game to qualify is in that position purely because of their own doing. It's not our fault they weren't good enough to qualify in four games, we should go about our own business however we want to. Admittedly, only de Gea, Fletcher, Rooney, Cleverley, Scholes, Hernandez, and Welbeck have a chance of starting on Sunday and played a part on Wednesday. But we have probably lost Cleverley due to a pure insistence of fecking around.

Anyway, as we have to expect the worst, on the basis that there is no Vidic, Anderson, Cleverley, Valencia, Kagawa, or Nani, I'd probably be tempted to go with this:

de Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra
Fletcher
Carrick Scholes
Rooney
van Persie Welbeck
--
Lindegaard; Jones, Smalling; Giggs, Powell, Young; Hernandez

The line-ups are so unpredictable though. I can see Young being favoured to start but I fecking hope not otherwise I might just turn the game off. I can also see us going three at the back (but faking it and saying Jones is in midfield or something like that). We have to go for a diamond with the players have have fit though (if we're benching as many as we can that started on Wednesday night).

Won't mind if Hernandez starts, I think he's more lethal from the bench but we'll see.

No sense in leaving out our best player this season for the biggest game of the season.

City only have 4 threats aerially. Kompany, Toure and Nastasic with Dzeko on bench. They're not Stoke City with 5 or 6. We should have enough height with Rio, Evans, Carrick and RVP (plus our keeper) to match them, without picking tall players for the sake of it.

If we'll get a clean sheet from this match, I'm gonna change my gender to Canadian.

We are clueless when playing the diamond and our wingers currently are clueless playing 442. It is our attackers - RVP, Rooney and Hernandez who have bailed us out with their finishing.

The defence has no protection and Evra has regressed back to the liability of old. We are top currently but we cannot continue playing like we are and remain top.

Please no Carrick and Fletcher together, please no Giggs starting.

If Ando and Cleverley would have been fit I think we could have win, but as it is, I have a bad feeling about this.

Rafael was rested while Jones and Smalling played in midweek.

Rafael has probably been our best player this season.

City's attackers are short.

If De Gea and Rafael doesn't start, I would give credit to Bloxy for making 'Has Fergie lost the plot?' thread.

Not really, but I will be very very unhappy.

Well then your only option is Carrick/Fletcher with Scholes, or starting Powell, along with playing Rooney in midfield and Welbeck and Young either side of van Persie.

I'd much rather just go with Fletcher, Carrick, and Scholes. Anything else is idiotic :/
