UEFA Champions League
Manchester United v CFR Cluj
Wednesday, 05/12/2012, 19:45 BST

Cluj and Gala are both on 7 points, with a +/- of 1 and 0 respectively. I suspect SAF will put out a pretty good team, as in the last CL game, in order to do justice to Gala.

Gala plays at Braga on wednesday.

De Gea
Jones Smalling Evans Buttner
Fletcher
Cleverley Scholes
Rooney
Hernandez Welbeck

Goal difference doesn't matter in this case because the Champions League operates on head-to-head before goal difference. Galatasaray lead on head-to-head (Galatasaray 1-1 CFR Cluj; CFR Cluj 1-3 Galatasaray), so Cluj will be going for a win.

Thanks, I should know that!

So if both Gala and Cluj win, draw or lose then Gala will go through. Braga is certainly capable of beating or drawing Gala, so Cluj may well go through without winning.

Anyway, I think we should rest Ferdinand, Carrick, Anderson (if fit) and Persie for City. And if Rooney plays hopefully he can come off after an hour.

Gala really should not be able to complain if we put out a weak team, considering the team we used against them last time around.

feck paying respect to Galatasaray, play the weakest team to keep players fresh.

This. If possible I would rest anyone who is starting on Sunday, the Cluj game will have no impact on where we finish, perfect opportunity to give some of the youngsters a bit of Champions League experience.

This - feck Galatasaray:

Lindegaard
Vermijl---Smalling---Wootton---Buttner
Jones
Powell---Giggs
Macheda---Chicharito---Welbeck

Bench: Johnstone, Rafael, Evans, Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Cole, Henriquez

The game is meaningless to us. Play those requiring games for fitness. Nobody starting against City, De Gea aside, should play at all in this.

De Gea
Jones Smalling Keane Buttner
Powell Fletcher Giggs
Macheda Hernandez Welbeck

All that matters is the derby so we should be cautious in the team we field.

Lindegaard

Jones
Smalling
Wooton
Buttner

Giggs
Fletcher
Powell

Welbeck
Hernandez
Macheda

De Gea
Jones Smalling Evans Buttner
Fletcher Scholes Powell
Welbeck Hernandez Giggs

Strong enough team this and should do the job at home, while resting pretty much everyone for the City game (apart from De Gea who could use a game to get his sharpness back and Evans, to get some confidence back after his horror show today). SAF said Vidic might be back for this as well so he might play a part.

And then use this for City..
De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Valencia Rooney Young
Van Persie

This should be a good chance to give the coming-back-from-injury and the young a chance. Mt preferred line-up:

DeGea
Jones Vidic Smalling Buttner
Tunnicliffe
Powell Petrucci
Valencia Hernandez Welbeck

Subs: Johnstone, Wootton, Cole, Thorpe, Januzaj, Macheda, Bebe

i hope giggs and scholes are going to start against cluj, as i don't want either of them anywhere near the starting line up at city.

-------------------------de gea-----------------------------

jones------------smalling---------vidic----------------buttner

-----------fletcher---------scholes---------powell-----------

welbeck-------------------hernandez-------------------giggs

could be 4-4-2 with fletcher on the right wing and giggs on the left.

perhaps an appearance from the bench for some of the younger players as well.

If you want to leave out all the players who look likely to start at City you can still get a pretty strong team out there.

De Gea
Jones Smalling Wootton Buttner
Fletcher
Powell Scholes
Giggs
Macheda Welbeck

Agree 100%

Though if fit might add Valencia for 45 mins for a run out but only to benefit us as this team should have enough to win. Alternatively might push Powell on and add Scholes for Macheda though.

Yeah De Gea needs the game, especially if we're planning on starting him in the derby. Wouldn't mind seeing Evans get a start as well after his horror show against Reading.

Expecting a slow tempo to the game with plenty of sloppyness coming from ourselfs.

1-1 FT

If Vidic is back for this and gets through 90 minutes then its a huge plus.

de Gea
Jones Smalling Vidic Buttner
Fletcher Giggs
Powell
Welbeck Hernandez Young

Johnstone; Vermijl, Wootton; Cleverley, Tunnicliffe, Cole; Macheda

Something like that - if Valencia and Nani are fit they'll be involved.

The real question is; who to rest?

I'd say: Van Persie, Rooney, Rio, Evra, Evans, Carrick and Rafael.

So, the team should be:

De Gea; Vermijl, Smalling, Jones, Buttner; Fletcher, Scholes, Cleverley, Anderson, Hernandez, Welbeck

Sub: Vidic (for Smalling), Giggs (for Anderson), Powell (for Hernandez)

Out for more than a month.

Play the young lads - Vermijl, Keane, Wootton, Powell, Petrucci, Cole, Bebe, Tunnicliffe etc.

Think we'll know tonight with the u21s game what kind of team we are putting out against Cluj.

It's a must win game to qualify for the elite section of the u21s league, and we can't afford to bump up many of the u18s with an FA Youth Cup tie on Friday so I think it will be mostly senior squad rotation playing on Wednesday with maybe a few youngsters filling gaps and bench places, not an entirely reserve side.

Yeah...got the feeling that because we need a win tonight in the u21 we might see the kids miss out...which would be a shame.

The solution is to start our Under-16s. Rhain Davis starting up front.

Full on squad rotation please. Rest any player who will start vs City, but still have respect for the opposition by playing first team squad players who will benefit from minutes to keep them fresh, ready for an extended run in the team in case of injuries.

Something like:

DDG
Smalling, Vidic, Wooten, Buttner,
Powell, Fletcher, Jones
Welbeck, Hernandez, Giggs

Of course I think DDG should play vs City but will benefit from playing to get his radar back on track given he has not played for a few games.

-----------------De Gea-----------------

Jones-------Smalling------Vidic------Buttner

Nani(fit?)---Scholes----Fletcher-----Welbeck
-------------------Powell--------------------
------------------Hernandez----------------

Powell will certainly be playing as he wasn't involved for the reserves tonight. Macheda, Tunnicliffe and Petrucci all played 90 mins tonight so anyone putting them in their line ups will probably be disappointed.

Not sure why everyone has Vidic starting - surely it's more risk than reward? I'd be happy to see him get a few minutes at the end and feed him back slowly. We have 4 CBs that are in better shape which gives us the luxury to get him back 100% so we don't have to shut him down again.

Hope we play a full strength forward line with our second reserve defence. And Powell somewhere.

Goals goals goals!! That should warm us up.
