Carling Cup Quarter-Final
Wednesday 30th November 2011
Old Trafford, Manchester
KO: 1945 GMT

Gagging for Morrison to get a start in the second striker position. I'm almost certain he'd run the game and force his way onto the bench for some Premier League games.

Hope to see Valencia and Gibson get a run out, could prove useful until Ando and Cleverley are back. Expect Rafael to return as well.

Would love to see Morrison or Pogba get a start here, maybe even both if I'm being greedy. With our injury problems in midfield, there's no point in risking first-team players there.

I want Morrison and Pogba to get starts. But I think they'll be on the bench instead and we'll start Gibson in midfield with Fletcher. Probably give Park/Valencia starts as they need football and Berbatov/Macheda upfront.

I think Young should start, he needs to play matches and get back to form again.

i like your team but i'd prefer Pogba to start ahead of morrison...

i think he's more physically ready for the first team

I'd completely forgotten about Diouf. Would like him to get some game time, if only to put his name out there to prospective buyers/loaners in January.

Diouf and Gibson wil start ahead of Pogba and Morrison.

And there will much grinding of teeth on RedCafe.

Can't see either Morrison or Pogba starting. Both on the bench at best IMO.

Why do people keep putting Morrison in a two man midfield? That's just not his ideal role.

I'm sure he's capable of playing in a 2 man midfield, at home, against a team in the division below...

FWIW I don't think he'll play, was just saying....

Team should be...

GK: Lindegaard

RB: Rafael
CB: Smalling
CB: Evans
LB: Fryers

RM: Valencia
CM: Pogba
CM: Park
LM: Diouf

CF: Berbatov
CF: Macheda

Subs: Amos, Fabio, Jones, Fletcher, Morrison, Gibson, Young

1-0 Berbatov goal

Agreed, I'd start Valencia as well, I think both could do with the game time. I'd play the twins, Smalling and Evans as the back four with Park and Fletcher in midfield and Berbatov/Macheda up top, unless Berba is still injured, in which case Diouf will have to play.

Amos has been our keeper in this competition thus far, why would we change that? Perhaps you lot are thinking that Palace will be more tricky and we need a change?

Apart from the keeping situation, I can't see much wrong with any of the teams that have been suggested really.

The boss will again rely heavily on youth, as he has in the previous rounds against Leeds United and Aldershot Town, and has suggested that Paul Pogba could be handed his first senior start for the Reds. The Frenchman came on as a substitute at Elland Road and the EBB Stadium but is now in the running for a place in the initial eleven, alongwith fellow FA Youth Cup winner Ravel Morrison.

"There will be complete change," revealed Sir Alex. "Just the same as we had at Leeds and Aldershot. Ravel Morrison was in the squad for Wednesday's game [against Benfica]. He's a very, very talented boy, of course, and he'll possibly be on the bench, at least, in midweek. But I've got other players needing a game like Mame Biram Diouf and Federico Macheda.

"All the younger players [will come in] - Zeki Fryers, the two Da Silvas [Rafael and Fabio] are possibles. Chris Smalling has come back and I may be able to play him on Wednesday. He's still young and it'll be a young squad against Palace. The only area where I've got problems is centre midfield. It's possible I could play Pogba in there but we'll wait and see. I've got enough players to choose from, that's for sure."

"I think the League Cup has turned into quite a good tournament," added the manager. "Clubs like United are able to introduce young players and ones who have not been playing regularly in the first team and it's been good to us over the years.

"We've won two finals at Wembley with young players, which is good going, and I think it's become an important tournament for us i

Good to see the likes of Pogba, Fryers etc will get a start.

I see where you are coming from, but the bench looks quite weak if we are in trouble after 60/70 mins, only Fletcher has any experience out of those.

Well Diouf is a senoir international, he's had goals coming off the bench for Blackburn also let's remember that both Beckham and Solskjaer, and indeed Macheda scored their first goal (goals) from the bench on their Premier League debuts when the side was losing even though they were still at a young age, so really an oppertunity for the young guys on that one.

I think I'd be a bit more concerned with my choice of vice captain, I'd probably opt for Jonny Evans or even Park Ji Sung. There does need to be a senior player or two in the mix which is why there's an expectation of the likes of the da Silva's, Gibson, Evans, Jones, Macheda and Smalling to really show their maturity if Berbatov or Park have to go off.

To be fair there's three centre midfielders and really no sub winger on the bench so maybe there's room for an Ashley Young there.

I was hoping Welbeck would have been fit, doesn't seem as if he'll be ready though.

Amos; Fábio; Fletcher, Morrison, Cole; Diouf, W.Keane

I can see us playing a 433 of sorts with flexibility like this. Gibson and Pogba in a two man midfield doesn't strike me as ideal, but with Park also working in there it'll be more solid. Park can also switch out to the left if we dominate enough and go 442. Fletcher could start over Gibson and perhaps Morrison would be the one to get the start over Pogba (if only one of them gets to start). I also wouldn't be opposed to seeing both Pogba and Morrison in there with a Fletcher or Park supporting them (or even Gibson).

In the defence I think Rafael, Smalling, and Evans all need a start after their injuries. It might be seen as risky due to them all being out for a fair while, but we also need to rest Ferdinand, and Jones could do with sitting it out as well. Vidic is a possibility as he's not been able to play much this season through injury and then suspension, but I'm sure we'd all rather see him rested. Possibly on the bench though.. Fábio started against Newcastle which was a bit surprising to me I guess, so I reckon Fryers could start this.

And as for the attack, Valencia, Berbatov, and Macheda could also all do with a (or another) start. As I said already, bit disappointed Welbeck might not make this as he could also easily fit into a 433/442 flexible team. Owen would have also been a good option too.

As for a bit of a surprise if Fergie does go with so much youth, I can see him benching any of Vidic, Nani, Young, or Rooney as some kind of back-up if things don't go to plan. But hopefully it wouldn't come to that and we can keep progressing. While the Champions League is going to look more out of reach even if we get through and the Premier League is going to be an extremely tough challenge - two good domestic cup runs will be nice to still win something if we fail on the main aims. Especially the FA Cup rather than another League Cup, which players like Wayne Rooney are still yet to win actually..

Is Berbatov even fit?
Wasn't in the squad to face Newcastle.

That seems about right, although I'd expect Valencia or Park to start ahead of Young and Lindegaard might get the nod in goal. I'm sure Berbatov and Evans will be in the squad if they've gotten over their injuries. As far as Berbatov's injury goes, all I heard was that it was a slight knock that kept him out of the squad for the Newcastle game.. So I was assuming he should be back for this. If not, the strike options are from Diouf, Macheda, and W.Keane unless Rooney or Hernández are used (which I very much doubt).

So this Morrison guy, is he really this good? How can I go about watching him, are United's reserve games streamed?

Reserve matches are streamed when they are on MUTV, if you watch out for the threads in the Reserve/youth forum they usually have a person share the link.

Here's the obligatory youtube vid

I dont know about you lot but I'm overly anxious for this game. More so than I usually am. I'm not sure if it's because our football is looking better or if I'm just anxious to see United play or it's just all mixed together. One thing is for sure, I hope this week hurries up to Wednesday!
