PAUL SCHOLES' TESTIMONIAL
05 AUGUST 2011, KO 19:30 BST
OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER

This is going to be a big night for me and my family but one which I intend to enjoy and I will savour every moment.
I have spent my whole footballing life at Manchester United, so this will be an emotional farewell.
This club is special in many ways but the fans are the best and I have always appreciated their support throughout my career.
I hope they enjoy the night, especially seeing the Boss and Eric battling it out in front of the dug-outs.

Good to see this game is sold out, he deserves nothing less.

This is going to hit me like a trainwreck come Friday. I know he has retired, but it hasnt sunk in for me yet.

Think someone I know is leading the team out of the tunnel, only heard it lastnight. He is a young lad who has a tumour in his head where they cant operate, only able to drain it and the odd radon therapy. Big night for him too.

Can't wait to go this game with my old man. His favorite player, and what a honor it's been to watch him hundreds of times.

Also guys, MUTV were certainly bigging up VDS' testimonial, so perhaps a thread on that? United under 13s play Ajax under 13's, and then after that Edwins dream team plays, which is stated to include some United players. Anyone know who?

2 days before the Charity Shield?

Who will play?

Well I hope that players like Welbeck, Valencia, Fletcher, Morrison, Pogba, Lindegaard will all play. I know Neville, Butt and Cole are there, perhaps they'll be on Uniteds team?

It's pretty much a mystery!

Van der Sar Jnr is a keeper in the U13's apparently

I refuse to accept this is happening and will continue to do so.

A fairly good selection of guest players for the Cosmo's squad. Hopefully some more big names will come out

I have it on good authority that Yorke is going to play. Annoyingly I'm not in Manchester for this...is it being televised?

I'm going to this. Can't wait but also don't want it to happen, seeing Paul Scholes play for the last time :(

Not going to this one, will be watching on MUTV though. It doubt it will be the last time we see Scholesy play, there'll be another testimonial or charity game or something down the line I expect. Gary Neville is in the Cosmos squad and I went to his testimonial expecting it'd be the last chance I'd get to see him play so I don't put much stock in the "last ever" hype.

Cantona: Leaving Man United was like quitting heroin
Published 11:22 01/08/11 By Laurie Hanna

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has said leaving the club was like quitting heroin.

The French star said he still finds it difficult going back to Old Trafford - because he found it so difficult to leave in the first place.

Cantona, 45, quit the club in May 1997 after five successful seasons, but admitted it was not an easy time in his life.

He said: “If you are a heroin addict, and you’ve gone through the agonies of withdrawal, you don’t go back and start hanging out with your dealer.

“I found leaving Manchester United very, very hard.

“It was, as I say, like quitting a class A drug. Psychiatrists have demonstrated that the body of a retired professional footballer can replicate the kind of symptoms that you get with abrupt opiate withdrawal.

“And that’s why I’ve avoided going back.”

But the forward - who scored 82 goals in 185 games for United - will return to Old Trafford this week, as manager of the New York Cosmos who will take on United for former team-mate Paul Scholes’ testimonial.

Cantona returns to Old Trafford on Friday

Cantona, now director of soccer for the American team, admitted he even struggled to watch United on television, adding that he was lucky to have other “consuming” interests.

He said: “You retire, but you’re still aching to play. But in order to play, you have to resist certain temptations, and train hard. And I just didn’t have the desire to do that any more.”

Meanwhile, French writer Bernard Morlino - a friend of Cantona - has revealed the pair celebrated Man United winning the Premier League in 1996 by reading poetry in a city centre bookshop.

He said the pair looked through the French literature section and Cantona chose a copy of ‘Rue Traversiere and Other Dream Tales’ by poet Yves Bonnefoy.

United (from): De Gea, Kuszczak, Lindegaard, Amos; Evra, Jones, Ferdinand, Smalling, Vidic, Fabio, Rafael, Evans; Anderson, Giggs, Park, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Young, Fletcher, Valencia, Obertan, Gibson, Cleverley, Pogba, Norwood, Morrison; Owen, Berbatov, Rooney, Welbeck, Macheda, Diouf.

Our squad. Great to see Ravel and Pogba both being included. Fletch's back too. Oh and Norwood is included, Scholesy would like that ;)

Dont suppose this is on MUTV for free by any chance?
