It looked like a case of 'letting him know he was there' and it should have been a yellow which is fair in my view. In days gone past a player would brush this off and mark Browns cards for a future crunch but now we see play acting and drama queens.

Yeah, that's certainly how I prefer the game being played. If something pissed me off in that Confeds game it was no one went in hard on the little shit. I know Tabárez has been working hard on erasing the thug tag from the national team, but at the very least a good crunching tackle was in order.

I've seen him playing for Santos for many years now and he has always been a cocky shit winding up opponents then crying wolf when he gets as much as a nudge. I don't like it, I don't make a point of calling him names either or having an irrational dislike for him, I just see it as a "type" that is all too often in South America. Loads of forwards try get their markers to lose concentration by winding them up, it comes right up from street football. The thing is X% do it but are not particularly good so defenders brush it off, Y% are good and let their football do the talking, then a minority are really good but still resort to it because it is clever and those two are right there.

It is actually clever, why let defenders kick lumps into you all game long? Wind them up into getting themselves yellow/red-carded quickly so they stop kicking you, and go down like you've been shot so they are a bit paranoid about getting anywhere near you for fear of being sent off. It actually works, Suárez got about 7 Argentinian players yellow carded in one game in the Copa América. Some were fouls, some weren't, who cares? It sent their defence into complete disarray as they took turns to mark him to avoid second yellows, and our single goal threat came from the resulting set pieces. By the end they were all standing off him as they couldn't afford a second sending off. It's a valid strategy, you don't have to like it to admit it.

Now that's a good post, and one I don't really disagree with. Unfortunately most prefer to go with the "he's a despicable cnut who deserves to have his legs broken" one-liner, which is much more annoying. I still don't think Neymar is anywhere close to as scummy as Suarez, but I do agree with your assessment.

Yeah he's no Suarez but that is the sort of tactic he and a lot of South American players use. Valid or not it is cheating.

The problem with this is that football is not a no-contact sport. There will be contact to various extent. Exaggerating the level of contact does no good. In cases of Brown's red card, I have no sympathy for him, but it's possible to be annoyed at the cheats that simulate and exaggerate at the same time. I play football, it takes a lot to bring you down.

You're right, not all kinds of contacts are fouls. But it's usually pretty clear whether the kind of contact is legal or should be a foul, regardless of the intensity of the contact. For example, if a player dribbles past his marker, only for the defender to stick out his foot and get the slightest of nicks on the attacker's shin. Sure, it isn't enough contact for the attacker to go down, but it's also clear that the contact has slowed him down, thus giving the defender an unfair advantage.
Now I'd be perfectly happy if no one exaggerated contact in these situations, i.e. the attacker not going down. But my point was that, in this scenario, if the attacker doesn't go down, 9 times out of 10 the referee will not blow his whistle, and the defender will get away with it. As things stand, in many situations, the only way for a player to get the foul he rightfully deserves is by exaggerating the contact and making sure the ref sees it.

The pundits on Sky Sports for the goals last night (Carragher Wright and Hoddle) all made a good point that it was a nothing kick, but it was stupid and merited a red. It's the fact that if you were going to do something like that and obviously get caught, why not crank up the power to 100% and smash the little fecker to pieces! Then he will have a real reason to roll about.

He is in no doubt a brilliant football, and will most probably be Brazils all time goalscorer by the time he retires. It's just a shame he is one of the biggest pricks around. He suits the Barca system perfectly both in Cnutishness and in style

This

Ah good, we're back to wishing serious injuries upon him. I was thinking it had been a while since the gimp parade were out.

Had the player in the middle of the wall jumped - no goal.

reminds me of a goal we conceded a few years ago on a free kick. Shot headheight into the wall. Only, he shot it past Jay Spearing, who jumped all of one inch and found it just out of his reach, and the ball curled into goal.

My post was a joke. But keep putting your tagline to good use so it gives us all something to laugh about

I was referring to SirAFs post which clearly wasn't. As for your comment about my tagline, if you'd like to find even one unreasonable post I've made about Neymar, go ahead. I'm very objective when it comes to him, I don't think he's ever going to be on Messi/Ronaldo's level. I got the tagline because I've been watching him for a long time, and posting about him when he was in Brazil and the gimp parade were writing him off as another Brazilian hype machine, clearly without having watched him bar the odd game or two. I'm sure everyone is in fits of laughter when they read my posts, which aren't on either end of the extreme. Or something.

I like neymar becoz he is good and does tricks an stuff and score lots of goals so that is y i like him xx

Did the Keano smiley indicate that I was being a 100 % serious?

What's the verdict so far from those in the 'Robinho MKII' camp?

A pretty good player to be honest. He has brought his diving culture over with him and it does get tedious watching it, as if there aren't enough of them that play for the two biggest teams in Spain already. He has done really well with 5 assists I believe, and he has so far proven his doubters wrong. I even doubted his ability should he be playing in a different league. At the start, it was tough, but now, he really has gelled well with the rest of the Barca team.

I'd say he entered more of a diving culture than he came from but thanks for your answer. I really haven't watched as much of him as I'd like to, and I find myself not enjoying his game as much for Barcelona as I would've have or do for another club or Brazil.

Looks more like he was trying to score (similar to his goal in the Clásico) and the ball was deflected into Sánchez' path by the 2nd defender's right leg.

He's not Robinho and will become an even better player. The stupid thing about the Robinho comparison was that Neymar's associative play was the fundamental difference between the two. He wasn't going to look out of place because he's not as selfish as made out to be. I said it earlier in the season and I still stand by what I said: Neymar's been better than Messi so far. I think that matters to a certain extent because he's not gone quiet when Messi hasn't been available, or been able to perform well. Trying to destroy the low-block in the last game, for example - he nutmegged two players with a perfect pass. On a different note, his shooting technique is so good - his accuracy is phenomenal IMO. Only "concern" at the moment is lack of goals, but 3 goals and 8 assists - I think it is - in La Liga is a fantastic start.

For all his technique and guile, it's the footballing brain that I'm most impressed with whenever I watch him.

Indeed, he really has adapted to the tougher La Liga very well indeed. I had my doubts and I thought that should he play for Barcelona, he would be really selfish and there would be friction between him and Messi. This hasn't been the case and I am happy to have been proved wrong about him. If this is his first season in la liga, I cannot wait to see him next season once he gets his season under his belt. I think he will be challenging Ronaldo and Messi for the Ballon D'Or.

It's been almost a perfect beginning to his career and already exceeded my wildest expectations for his first season. His accuracy will improve but he's already an outstanding talent...perhaps better than I imagined possible. I think I really underrated aspects of his game but it helps being able to see what sort of defensive presence the young talent possesses. He's won so many balls back and defended deep with vigor. The domino effect of this undoubtedly has even elevated Alexis & Pedro's game, IMO. There's a palpable joy of playing that Neymar exudes and it's a pleasure to watch. He has massive support among fans already and scoring in the Clasico cements his early legacy as a Brasilian great to shine at Camp Nou, again

My only reservation now, apart from his exaggerating contact, is that his best position is in Messi's spot. Fortunately, he'll continue to elevate that left side into a Barcelona legend for a couple of seasons but the time is going to come where Messi will have to relinquish some control in that area of the pitch. Hard to imagine possible but I see it happening sooner than later. The reservation, of course, is whether Cruyff's premonition might come true
