Sad injury to have for sure and I wish him speedy recovery, but I can't say I'm saddened by the fact that I won't have to look at his diving antics and stupid face during WC.

feel sorry for him even though I have been supporting everybody who plays Brazil. Still think missing Silva against Germany is a bigger loss for Brazil.

Oh them internets

Watching the incident in slow mo. It was more a clumsy tackle than a malicious one. ref actually waved play on. Surprising it ended up with such a serious injury.

Absolutely gutted and devastated. I hope he recovers well and it doesnt derail his career.

He's a victim of Brazil's shit-house tactics and a homer referee, as much as anything else. Karma's a bitch.

For me, the real shame is that Brazil have a readymade excuse when the anti-football they've inflicted on this tournament eventually gets found out. Neymar's no great loss. There's been more exciting and skilful players than him in the tournament.

Spot on in terms of the atmosphere that led to his eventual injury, even if you can argue it wasn't intentional. A shite Primera referee that I've grown accustomed to hijacking Barcelona matches did it again last night and in the process allowed the rough play to escalate where injuries eventually take place

Would disagree strongly that Neymar will not be a great loss, particularly for Brasil. Hope the player recovers well and without any longterm complications since the spine can be unforgiving

I thought the same. Zuniga had his eyes on the ball and it just looked ridiculously clumsy. No worse than some of Brazil's challenges on James Rodgriguez.

He's definitely a loss for Brazil. Makes them more likely to get knocked out by Germany. Fingers crossed anyway. Brazil have been poor to watch and their thuggery last night deserves no reward. Personally, I won't miss Neymar. His persistent diving and play-acting have made more memorable an impact than anything he did with a football. Unlike the number 10 his team mates kicked the shit out of last night.

He will make a miraculous recovery. I am sure of it. It all reeks of a smoke screen to fool the germans.

Ironic in some ways as the earlier fixture of France vs Germany evoked recollections of Schumacher's assault on Battiston. It'll be wondered now how the Neymar incident wasn't even a freekick; indeed play went on for a wee while after until someone else went down and he looked about and noticed the poor bastard lying there.

All round it was a monumentally shit performance from the referee and he let the game get out of hand by inexplicably refusing to book anyone for the first hour, it seems. Wouldn't surprise me if he was on the take or part of a large 'number of yellow cards' betting syndicate.

He was poor last night, it has probably something to do with his injury in the previous game. Brazil started the game well but turned into shit in the second half. Hope Germany beat them in the next game.

It's always a shame to see a player injured like that and u obviously hope he makes a full recovery. It was a clumsy challenge but nothing more.

The ref has to accept some of the blame - let Brazil away with far too much. A couple of earlir yellows might have made for a different game.

Also - as said above, Brazil kicked lumps out of Rodriguez, even taking turns to foul him snd often, what goes around cones around.

Amazing how Brazil were the darlings of world football but now... To be fair they've not played beautiful football since 82 but they've always produced great attacking players. No idea what happened when Fred, Jo and Hulk were being produced mind.

So, cowardly knee in the back fracturing the spine or a bite?

Has Messi been better though? He's been in and out of games as much as anyone. Don't get me wrong he's been better as each game has progressed but the first game, had he not scored, a lot of people would have said he was shite, all he did was give the ball away. Second he didn't do much and he's not ran either of the others. Just his moments of genius to score the goals (or assist Di Maria) have been telling. Much like Neymar.

He ran the show against Nigeria.

That wasn't clumsy, it was vicious. Why is he jumping for a ball that falls to the chest of the guy in front of him? Can't have been the ball he was looking at.

The ref is as much to blame. He let everyone do what they want and created the atmosphere that precipitated it. Still, that should be a ban for Zuniga.

The only one to blame for this is the ref he let way too many things slide and the atmosphere on the pitch got way too heated in the second half and he still let almost all of it slide. If a ref doesn't offer more protection to players shit like this will happen. I hope the ref never gets an international game again after such a performance.

I can't believe all the people in this thread who go "boy who cried wolf", or "meh, Neymar's no great loss", etc. Having a good crack at winning the WC and then being kicked out of the rest of it in the final minutes of a match in the quarter finals is a very sad event, and a cracked vertebrae is certainly bad enough that I won't shrug and go "well, he dives 99/100 times".

It's sad for the world cup and sad for the lad.

Yeah, I'm not a Neymar fan but it's nothing less than a shame. Very weird attitude to think getting your back broken is some kind of karma for playing football a certain way.

Looked intentional to me, but as people have said what goes around comes around.

This is what I dont understand. Was neymar personally kicking others? He isnt at fault here unless you expect him to argue against the manager's tactics and its a shame that he is going to miss out on a WC because of this. Poor kid must be gutted.

I think it's a horrible shame, and I wouldn't wish injury on anyone. He was dealing with the pressure on his shoulders well and he is the only exciting player to watch in that Brasil side.

But I'll be brutally honest, there's things I won't miss, like him rolling around crying after EVERY challenge, ironically the exact same way he did when he genuinely injured which is why I think some of us assumed he was just play acting again.

Such a shame. I'm not a fan of neither Neymar nor Brazil in this WC, but the narrative was excellent. I don't think Brazil have any chance now.

That movement of the knee is IMO a purely natural reaction when facing an "in air" impact with a person or something else. Im sure Zuniga didnt do it on purpose.

Of course it's not his fault. But what people are arguing, correctly in my opinion, is that Brazil have been getting away with a good number of fouls (and playacting) and that feeds an atmosphere if not of violence then of carelessness, and I do see the foul as a careless/reckless one rather than a malicious one. It's a foul that I've seen many times before.

Refs have a delicate job, it's a contact sport and over-cautious refs can kill a game. On the other hand, a ref who seems to be programmed not to hand out cards can put players in danger. Most Liga refs are accused of over-caution, last night we had a reminder of why caution is required.

Personally I was concerned for Neymar as soon as Marcelo ran to him and then stopped - that didn't look like a timewasting scam for the ref, it looked like actually damage to me. Of course, by that time the ball was down the other end and Brazil's players had the option to put it out of play, you don't need a ref for that.

How is Neymar at fault for the referees inability to referee fairly? He can't be blamed for referees causing frustration by making biased decisions.

I agree though it's not a malicious foul as such. It's clumsy and silly and stupid and he will get lambasted in most media outlets because Neymar is largely the face of this World Cup and it'll have a crippling effect on the atmosphere.

I'm sad this has happened for the World Cup in general. The atmosphere needed Neymar as much as it needs brazil to still be in it.

How is any of that his fault? When you see posts like karma is a bitch, it means you are attributing the blame for that on him. Was he fouling players on the half way line?

He and practically the whole Brazilian team have been whining, whinging and cheating this whole tournament and for one or two of the games it appeared as if the refs were turning a blind eye towards it.
I don't like seeing anyone injured but Neymar and this Brazilian team cheat too damn much for me to feel a large amount of empathy for their loss.

I mean "what goes around comes around" for Brazil.
But yes, gutting for him personally

Shame, tbh even with him I thought Brazil had run their race but I find it hard to see them beating Germany. This is set to be Messi's world cup if he wants it... if Argentina play Germany in the Final, so much history... Maradona had made history v Germany and Messi wants revenge for 2010.
