Neymar

By the way, I said a few posts back that - despite the goals - Neymar hasn't struck me as one of the best 3 or 4 players in the world, which is what he's being touted as.

Amongst others, James Rodriguez has impressed me more. Based on their respective performances in this tournament I'd rather the Colombian at my club. His 45 minutes tonight were far more impressive than anything Neymar has produced IMO.

I don't disagree, by any means. It's silly to say that Neymar is in the top 3/4 players in the world. Also, James Rodriguez has been great, and was beyond fantastic tonight - lovely goal. I don't think Neymar is the best young player in the world, nor do I think he's been the stand-out player of this tournament so far (Robben, for me), I just feel too many people are underrating him on here & are too quick to credit anything he does to something else. Brasil's other forwards (and even midfielders, bar Hernanes, when going forward) are about as useful as beef in a Hindu's kitchen. He's alone up there & he's done a hell of a job so far.

Neymar is a truly a special player. I get joy watching him play. Wish our country had a player with such skill, but we never will in the next decade minimum because of many inadequacies. It's all one touch and pass and flair play is discouraged. Brazil have no chance of winning the world cup without him - every good attack goes through him.

Is he in the best 5 players in the world? Overall, no. On current form, definitely. Been the best player in the world cup so far for me tied with Hames and Robben.

Barcelona are lucky to have him. I'm sure till there's Messi he won't shine brightly there sadly (or perhaps thankfully for us). If Barcelona want rid of him in the near future, I would want Neymar at United.

Neymar has always been a big player for Brazil, his goal scoring record for them proves it, however I do feel he is wasted at Barcelona. Another fine example is Sanchez.

Yeah at Barcelona he has to hold position and also sacrifice his goal scoring nature to serve Messi.

He should've gone somewhere where he'd be the main man.

Agree completely. Nice bits of skill here and there, couple of well taken goals but nothing outstanding. I'm expecting more in the knockouts, and it'll be needed to get past Chile.

His goals record is fairly misleading, IMO. It's a nice number and all but the reality is he's scored 10 goals in competitive international games. It's a good record of course, but insane? Not for me.

How many competitive international games has he played though?

Would wager that number would be higher if Brazil had to qualify for this World Cup. Scored four at the Confederations Cup, four (so far) at the World Cup, only really the Copa America where he disappointed but he's got plenty of time to rectify that.

Since 2011 he's played 13 competitive games for brazil and scored 10 goals. I'd say that, that argument holds little if any water. Its in fact higher than his scoring rate for brazil in all these friendlies they've played.

Have to say, his goals have been immense for Brazil, but he hasn't struck me with a piece of play which blew me away. For example, Ronaldo the other night, in the first 10 mins of the game, had 3-4 players on him and he managed to pull off some insane skills to get out of trouble. Neymar, for me, hasn't done that yet.

His goal scoring is great, though. He drags his team through games when everyone else looks poor and its easy to see why Barca paid 50/80M for him.

In truth, the real world cup starts from here which is what he should be judged on. He plays for brazil which expect nothing less than a tournament win. Ultimately whether he can drive them to the world cup title with inspiring performances is what this world cup will be remembered for and not really for his 4 goals in the group stages. He's done well so far and certainly in the handful of top performers at the tournament but more is needed. The positive thing for him is that he's gotten better and better by the week which culminated in his by far best game of the tournament vs cameroon. Against croatia his all round play was well below his standards but he managed to bag a couple of decisive goals(1 was a pen though). Vs mexico it was clear his all round game was at a higher level but he didn't decide the game. Vs cameroon his all round games went up a notch and he matched it with productivity.

Now chile awaits and his true world cup story is there to be written. He's still undoubtedly in touching distance of the golden ball and golden shoe which are the positives. Those going on and on about how he's behind Robben and Rodriguez so far are missing the point of these big int competitions. If they fail in the next round, then what they've done would be rendered useless. Messi was the best player in the group stages at the 2010 world cup and came up short in the knockouts, thus failed.

Colombia will return home to an epic crowd for their performances so far alone....so no, it wouldn't be rendered useless. In terms of winning the golden awards, yes, but no ones questioning how they are won....Neymar is behind others as the player of the group stages though.

Before he was a show pony and lacked substance, now he is scoring in the world cup and people still want to pick at him.

I think his antics and what he is perceived as has blurred people's view of him as an actual player. If he had the personality of Scholes everyone would have been on his dick. Now he is clearly just letting the football do the talking and looks a focused player. Good on him.

He is only 22. I don't think it would be incorrect to say he is the best young talent in the world.

Who's disputed that he's behind rodriguez and robben so far In the competition? Its pointless cause it won't matter one jot in a few weeks time. Obviously by saying they'll be rendered useless I don't mean to colombian society, I'm talking in a pure football sense.

So many people I know do seem to hate, call him arrogant or cite his diving. I find that all very bizarre. The amount of pressure thats been placed on the lad in the last 12 months is incredible, and he had a perhaps average season at Barcelona but he's really delivered so far at the WC, and under an enormous burden as well.

His overall first season at Barcelona was average but only because he disappeared after the transfer news unsettled him & the club. The first half of the season was beyond expectations

He did a very good job for you lot when Messi was out didn't he? I thought he had quite a good season at Barca, given that he would need to adjust to their style of play.

I hope Luis Enrique gives him a freer role so that he isn't simply restricted to holding position and serving Messi.

They'd be better off with him, Messi and Suarez all moving about and being impossible for defenders to pick up.

Missed his injury at the end. Just saw the image of him on the stretcher.

Is it really as bad as it looks? Or was it him being dramatic?

He got knee'd on the lower part of his spine. It looked painful.

I see. Could be bad I guess. Lower back is always a horrible place to have pain. Still, I'd expect him to make the Semis.

Edit: Then again, I probably should see the impact before making that claim :D

It'll be a bit of a dull pain for a while but there's no way he's missing the SF.

Looked like feckall to me. I'm sure they will play it out as if he's a major doubt for the semi though.

apparently he has a fractured vertabrae and is out of the world cup.

I think Germany were always going to beat Brazil anyway but It's really sad seeing Neymar injured. Loosing Neymar and Silva for the semi final is very bad news for the host nation. Hope he recovers well.

Shit, that sucks. I feel pretty bad for calling him a time-wasting cnut now.

Surely their chances of winning the World Cup are gone now? He has been anonymous at times but he has at times dragged Brazil through a fair few games with moments of absolute brilliance, they will miss him incredibly. Question is who will replace him. Willian? Bernard?

Shocking news, hope he recovers soon. It's a shame that the World Cup loses another top player and playing Brazil in the semifinal without him and Thiago Silva does feel a bit wrong. I always want to see the best players compete on the pitch :(.

A real shame. Didn't think it'd be that serious but when a player goes down like that without the theatrics you fear the worst.

Even though his form has been erratic, Brazil will sorely miss their talisman.
