Our Rivals Squad next year - Arsenal

Arsenal used to play some decent football but not anymore. Their play is way too narrow with no width and they move the ball too slow, with lots of passing sideways
I don't disagree with that. Sanchez has added some verve and hopefully Walcott will too. Otherwise we have too many midfielders out wide trying to cut in, strangles our play a bit.

Campbell looked lively on the weekend, maybe some more time for him.

I think we will click pretty soon. I was thinking about the formation we should play. And this looks best to me:

Artery/Flamini-Ramsey
Jack
Theo-------------Alexis
Welbeck

Looks real solid to me. Only a matter of time before we click. Unless of course Arsene insists on playing that ridiculous 4-1-4-1.

If Ramsey lifts his game to last years level we'll improve on every part of the field.

Alexis just on another level to the rest of his team mates... should have ended the game with like 4 assists. bailed them put once again...

Paul Merson is brilliant when he does Arsenal games.

Brutal but honest. Quite refreshing to see and Sky have made a good choice getting him to do more live studio punditry this season

Koscielny being 'rested' and could be out for a month

Good thing we have such great defensive depth.

Arsenal's Per Mertesacker says he has struggled for motivation this season

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has admitted he has struggled with motivation since winning the World Cup with Germany this summer.

The 6ft 7in centre-back retired from international football after the major triumph but accepts the highs in Brazil have come at some cost to his performances for Arsenal.

He was culpable for Hull striker Abel Hernandez’s goal in the 2-2 draw last weekend and also failed to pick up Anderlecht’s Dennis Praet for the Belgian club’s goal in Arsenal’s 2-1 Champions League victory on Wednesday.

“Personally it is difficult at the moment because that was really a long season last year and to come back from that World Cup and get the motivation back," Mertesacker said.

"I am nearly back, but you can feel there is something missing at the moment. With those games, the belief and the mentality is there, but the motivation will come back.

"We didn't even have time to celebrate [the World Cup win] properly, that was the first thing, but you realise month after month what happened. I am still not there [taking in] what happened in Brazil, maybe in five or 10 years you can really realise what was going on there.

"We came back to Berlin, got on the stage, waved our hands, showed the World Cup and then everyone disappeared to their families to get some holidays, some rest and calm."

Arsenal’s victory in Brussels means the Gunners have qualification in their own hands from Group D but Mertesacker has been underwhelmed with the level of performance shown by Arsene Wenger’s men this season.

“Everyone knows that it was a difficult start for us and our confidence is not that much how we wanted it," he said.

"The character is good, the mentality is good, but football-wise, we lack a few things.

"Our passing game is not as efficient as last year. We are not at our best. We have to admit that, be honest with ourselves and train harder."

L'Arse are eyeing a move for Krychowiak - a defensive midfielder from Sevilla who just transferred there from Reims. Apparently they've sent scouts to make a report on him.

Don't think Per's gonna last another season at the top level, he's been getting worse and worse since the start of 2014.

Really? He's only just turned 30, hardly old especially for a center back who had no pace to begin with.

Still think it's funny?

Like Liverpool fans, Arsenal fans experience a similar Arsene Wenger Love-Hate curve. They're optimistic about him at the start of the season; eventually the chances of the title slip away - optimism fades; then it looks like top 4 is in jeopardy - boos at the Emirates!; then Arsenal go on a run around February/March; Arsenal secure fourth place - let's give him another year, he's got money to spend now!

This would be accurate maybe 3 years ago.

I like how Mertesacker says he's lost motivation after winning the World Cup, despite contributing as much to Germany's win as Reina did to Spain's.

Their football and what they are about a footballing team is so tumescent and boring and their mentality is weak, I dont see how the fans can put up with it season after season. How on earth do you give up a 3-0 lead at home to Anderlecht without something being very wrong upstairs.

He started four matches and came on as a sub in the semi final and final?

Really? F me, I stand well and truly corrected. I thought their back line was consistently, Lahm, Hummels, Boateng and Howedes. Ah well, fair play, Per.

Classic Arsenal.

It must be so frustrating for the fans. They haven't properly threatened to win the league in years, and they're not even close to being in the mix for winning the CL. It might be time for Wenger to go, and this isn't just knee-jerk after tonight, I've thought it for a while now. They may regress after losing Wenger, but they could also challenge for the league if they make the right appointment and a few good signings. I'd say its worth the risk, as the way it's going now I have no doubt that United will win a league before Arsenal do under Wenger.

So mentally weak as well. It's a cliche, but it's true.

Nah, after the FA Cup win and the Sanchez acquisition Wenger love was brimming.
Well, obviously? Say what you want about him but obviously we're going to be pleased about winning a trophy and signing Sanchez. That doesn't mean we can't also think that Wenger needs to leave.
