Phil Jones

if we dont sign a defensive midfielder this summer, i think jones will play the majority of his games in that role. i know its not a certainty, but it is a move that would make quite a bit of sense.

Not sure if it does. he will do well against lower half teams (and caf will go into ********) and he'll get overrun by top 4 and European teams (and caf will go into blame mode)

lets just get somebody who knows the job inside out.

I dont think he has the tools to become an excellent CM. Looks like a CB through and through

I think his performances in CM last season were of a substantially higher standard than his performances at CB. Indeed, his three best performances in any position were all in December and all in midfield.

I'd say his best performances were at full-back fwiw.

Only really remember one good performance in midfield, against an abject QPR side.

The less said about his performances in central defence the better.

Doesnt say much. Hasn't been all that at all. Started well but feck me was he frustrating later on. Got tired mind.

It was that run of three matches against Villa, QPR and Wolves, he looked like a fecking monster. Mediocre opponents, of course, but it suggests there's something there. He's been much more consistent at full back, not least because he's played there for us more than the other two positions put together, and I suspect he'll get most of his games there again next season, but I reckon he's more likely to be a midfielder in the long run than a centre-back.

Any word on what has gone on with our Mr. Jones? Very odd, didn't play in the Euros and is now 'injured' or 'unfit'?

He's having a scan on a back injury.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones will undergo scans this week on his troublesome back injury, Goal.com has learned.

Jones is a major doubt for United's Premier League opener against Everton next Monday as the club struggle to diagnose the problem.

The 20-year-old was sent home from United's pre-season tour of Norway for a period of rest and relaxation in the hope that the injury would settle down.

But Jones is still in discomfort and the club are now taking steps to get to the bottom of the problem.

It leaves Sir Alex Ferguson lacking central defensive options ahead of the start of the new season.

Nemanja Vidic is coming back from a long-term knee injury and is unlikely to feature against the Toffees, while Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are out of action with ankle and foot injuries respectively.

Jones, who can also play at right-back or in midfield, signed for Manchester United from Blackburn last summer in a £16.5 million deal and made 40 appearances in all competitions in his first season at Old Trafford.

Crap. Back injuries are never good. Weird for someone so young though!

There was too much of abandoning threads in last few days, no wonder he injured his back.

Seriously? the season hasn't even started and we've got a CB problem? Out of all the positions, the one I think we're "strongest" in or have the most cover is the one in which we're currently lacking depth, just incredibile.
Hopefully this isn't a sign of what's to come because last year the amount of injures we've suffered were just ludacris.

Terrible news.
7 defenders and 2 are injured for 4-8 weeks.... and Evans isnt fit enough for Monday.

Jesus fecking H Christ.

I'm not all that arsed about the centre of defence, as I think the other four CBs are all much better at the role than Jones is. Leaves us light at right-back though. Rafael's gonna earn his corn in the coming weeks, that's for sure.

I dunno, what the hell is up with our training, do we make them run through minefields in Carrington or what ?!
