Politics at Westminster | BREAKING: UKIP

Oona King is great, she would have been better choice.

I heard that one area reported a turnout of only 13%, a pretty sad reflection of where the democratic process finds itself in some parts of the country right now.

Have you all heard the story of the Lib Dems being beaten by a candidate dressed as a penguin called Professor Pongu? You know you're having a bad time fo it when that happens.

UKIP's rise in the south will be a concern for Cameron and Sayeeda Wasi's remarks won't be a help there either.

How is she great? She was an MP most famous for being ousted from her seat by George Galloway.

Great for the mayoral race. Boris has had it easy against Ken, who is tired and old. Oona would have been a fresh candidate, offering something different.

At least Ken will feck off now.

I see what you mean, they could have done with a bigger figure though.

I know many consider him to be the Anti-Christ within Labour but Peter Mandelson would do a good job for London with such a portfolio, there are quite a few Labour figures who ran big departments who would be an interesting candidate as opposed to random former backbench MPs.

Someone like John Cruddas should be the Labour London Mayoral candidate.

Mandelson is great, but I'm not sure he'd be selected. He was never really loved in the party, and he did himself no favours with his book...

Ed Miliband just been egged in Southampton, so swings and roundabouts!

Lab majority on Glasgow council.

Well they're saying it's very narrowly Boris' on 1st preferences. I reckon Ken might swing it on 2nds, plenty of people putting up Jones/Paddick/Benita with Ken second.

Yeah, I can't imagine many people putting Boris as their second preference. You can be sure Ken will have picked up a substantial number of 2nd preferences from those who opted for the Green and Lib Dem candidates.

Ken won't swing it on 2nd preference votes. Last to declare are mostly Labour constituencies; they would have Ken first pref...

I'd have thought they have to count all the 1st prefs first (to see who the run off candidates are) before getting on to second?

Interesting Ken has nearly twice as many 2nds in Southwark as Boris though his 1st pref lead was only about 67%. In Southwest Ken has more 2nds than Boris though he has 80% less firsts.

A 12th London constituency - North East - declares its first preference votes in the mayoral election. Ken Livingstone takes 53.5% to Boris Johnson's 28.2%.

An 11th London mayoral constituency - Barnet and Camden - declares its result. Boris Johnson takes 49.4% of first preference votes and Ken Livingstone 34.8%. That's a bigger margin in favour of the Conservative candidate than in 2008.

Think Boris will nick it.But he will not have a strong mandate.

The counting machines for these mayoral elections have produced delays every time IIRC.

Sunderland South could have done their counting procedure forty times consecutively since the polls closed by now.

Oooh Peter Bone going for Cameron. Again.

I don't know why he doesn't just defect to UKIP. His views are just as far-removed from the mainstream Conservative Party as those of the most left wing Labour backbenchers are from the mainstream Labour party - the Labour backbenches who would be described by his kind as the 'extreme lefties'.

He's a nutter.

The final result of the London Mayoral Election is expected to be in within 30 minutes.

In the twilight zone maybe.

Anyone here listening to Fivelive's coverage? A Tory MP just dropped a clanger over the subject of gay marriage. A bit embarrassing to listen to.

Haven't they been saying that since 10 though?

According to Adam Boulton, the officials are trying to get the results out before midnight, because if they don't the winner will have to wait an additional 24 hours to become mayor due to a technicality in the rules.

PA reporting that Boris Johnson has won.

Ken takes a pop at the media for failing to be impartial.

Did Ken just accuse the BBC of being biased toward the Conservatives? lol

I may well have voted Green but i don't think we'll be seeing Jenny Jones at the Comedy Store in a hurry.

The Green candidate is a bit odd, isn't she?

She just made a joke about Boudica and Boris, and proceeded to inform those uneducated in 'semi-classics' about Boudica. Thanks for that...

Having presented a regular show on one of London's biggest radio stations whilst out of office i did find that a bit much from Livisntone. His greatest enemy was ultimately himself.

Cringeworthy that one. God knows what she thinks semi-classics are, maybe she has an NVQ in Latin studies?

There have been a few bad lines in the last 36 hours, such as Ed's 'friends, I bring you news from Scotland' and Warsi doing a Warsi in going for a controversial statement and leaving it hanging, though nothing like the electoral fraud cost us the election line she came up with 18 months ago during a BBC interview.

Where Ken was rambling and Jenny Jones awkward in their respective speeches, Boris kept things fairly brief but light even whilst taking a parting shot at Livingstone.

I personally can't believe i said some positive things about Warsi on here a few years back. Maybe she and Romney could have a gaffe off.
