LC W League Cup Quarter-final

Manchester United 4:1 West Ham United

Post-match discussion

Wed, 30 November 2016

I am delighted with the way we played tonight, it is the same way that we have played for the past few weeks, the difference is that we found the net. We did go a little flat at the end of the first half just after they scored, but we never really looked like losing the game. On to Everton sunday.

We were excellent tonight, too bad this result couldn't have happened in the match on Sunday. Our front line was unplayable at times, great stuff, let's hope we keep it up.

Glad to see we got the goals to match the performance. Haven't managed that enough this season. Goals were well constructed for the most part.

MOTM: Mkhitaryan

Can we please keep this Martial-Zlatan-Mkhitaryan partnership going? We hadn't tried it until tonight and it turned out to be a thing of beauty.

Disappointed DDG let that one in. Not that it hurt us, but it was a very uncharacteristic play from him.

Overall, very happy with today's performance. Exciting, attacking football with tons of chances and 4 goals. Could have been 5 or 6 realistically. Got me feeling good about getting 3 points this weekend.

Enjoyed that.
All the front players played well and look so fluid, could have had more.
Martial and Mkhi should gain great confidence from this and hope they stay in the team.

DDG mistake apart looked solid at the back. Jones and Rojo did well again.

Hope we can start scoring more in the league and yes we do have the players

I think we need to play down this "unlucky" label. Imo we've just not been clinical enough consistently. We have a very poor rate of converting 50/50 chances, which is the bulk of what we get. Usually our chances are not clear cut but should be converted by a clinical or in form striker. Rather we often have Ibra is prone to flimsy attempts at goal (usually straight at the keeper) and Rashford and Martial who seem to be low on confidence. Mata has been distinctly clinical because he usually converts the 50/50 chances he gets.

Today we made more clear cut chances like Ibra's second or martial's second. If we can convert more of our 50/50 chances we'll be kicking ass

Unfortunately missed the game but it seems like we did very well. How would you rate the performance /10? If only we'd thrashed them like this a few days ago. Game raising bar stewards.

Also seems like the ref missed another red card for the challenge on Ibra.

Back to normality again on Sunday against a struggling Everton I suppose, expecting a world class performance from Stekelenberg and a 1-1 draw. :D

So many positives. Rooney, Mkhitaryan, Jones.

4-1 and we still missed a hatfull.
I'm so impressed with Jones. hadn't played since March now done 3/4 in a row and looks solid. always thought he had better potential than Smalling. I hope he keeps it up!

First 2 have had their issues, third one I think Mourinho underestimated how influential he still is!

Those 3 have to start the main games. Rooney looked a lot better. Now it becomes tricky to fit Mata and Pogba in!

Although less hard to fit Smalling and Bailly in!
Either Smalling or Bailey would easily replace rojo.

Where can I find the highlights. Didn't see anything on Sky Go and no highlights embedded on the BBC match report.

For those who missed the game, i'm tempted to suggest you've actually seen it a few times recently (e.g. leagues games V Stoke, Arse, West Ham).
This was another match we played really well and dominated, only this time we converted chances.

I think West Ham goal was a major factor. It came at a perfect time for us. 60 mins to respond and half time for coaching staff to regroup. Obviously removed any thoughts of 1 goal being enough for the win, forced us to focus on getting the crucial second goal, and plenty of time to get it. Plus once the second goal goes in, we seem to score more.

Plenty of excellent footballers in this squad, playing good attacking football. I'm expecting a streak of wins to start soonish, but will remain patient until it does as i'm very happy with the direction we are taking under Jose.

Missed the game but looking at the highlights it seems our goals were all quite similar: lost the ball in the last third-ish, fought it back and ripped through them with some excellent passing.

Forgot to mention it earlier. Good to see us starting both halves on the front foot and scoring early goals in both halves instead of being the slow starters and having to come from behind.

Really happy with the performance. Hope we can convert this form to the league. Listening to talkshite this morning and that fat twunt Micky Quinn is gutted United won last night.

He's a diehard Liverpool fan so what do to you expect? He knows we got the better semi draw and if we both progress to the final then Jose has a good record there. Deep down he knows it's only a matter of time before we hit form.

It's reassuring in a way If we were crap, I doubt he'd care

We finally remembered to put the ball in the net, hope we carry it in the league. Midfield has to be settled as Herrera, Carrick, Pogba meaning one of Mkhi, Mata, Martial misses out. Welcomed dilemma for Mourinho, and like some have said, we're due to batter someone silly one these days.

We batter people in the cup competitions but not the PL. It' bemusing

Best performance of the season so far. Everyone was good. Delighted to see Martail and Mkhi play so well. Been saying from the beginning, how our season goes depends on the form of these two.

I hope Jose realizes soon enough that he is doing it in reverse: playing the cup XI in the league and the league XI in the cups.

Great fun. Miki, Rooney, Valencia all brilliant.

Now can Mourinho please NOT drop Miki and Martial? They should start at Everton instead of Lingard and Rashford. Though I don't mind Rashford - as a striker.
Just reminded me of the Mr. Robot Kermitt meme.

"Mhkitaryan played very well last game." "Yeah, but Lingard can dab"

I think we can push Mata and Pogba back in this formation, with Mkhi and Martial, and have them make us even better. Rashford can come for Ibra later on.

I'm happy we're through, but why the hell are we wasting players like Mkhi, Martial, and Carrick in cup competitions? We are clearly much better with them in the side. So frustrating.
This.
Happy with the result but why are we playing our game changers in the League Cup and not the league?

Miki - Jose does not trust him yet.
Martial - has been in bad form.
Carrick - he should be playing in the league.

I think i saw for the first time, Jose smiled during the post match interview.

Its been a while but I dont remember having so many international captains on the field at any one time since the 90s?
Five? Rooney, Miki, Basti, Zlatan and Valencia.

Was Shaw taken off because of an injury?

Zlatan has retired from international football, but yes get your point!

Best performance to date IMO. The front line we were calling for was finally put out and both wingers were superb, Martial and Mkhitarian electric.

Game really should have been put away in the first 20-25 minutes with some better finishing. Things were made needlessly edgy when De Gea's clumsiness led to an equalizer. This made De Gea our one underperformer IMO. He's certainly entitled to a mistake every now and then but that was a pretty shocking goal to allow, knowing how good he is.

Was really impressed with Ibra. He looked much quicker in the middle of the park, for some reason. It may have had to do with the space he was given but he just looked a lot quicker afoot and more menacing in the buildup. Rooney had his best overall game in quite some time.

Defensively, I think we still need work. Rojo and Jones have been good as partners but we looked vulnerable in the few times that West Ham came forward. Perhaps with Bailly or Smalling back in, we'll look more solid. I am very pleased, though, that our current CBs are playing above expectation.

It seems like we're putting emphasis on the cups this year and conceding that the title (and maybe top 4? :nervous:) is already lost. I don't think this is quite what people were hoping for but I wouldn't mind winning this competition at all. Any visit to Wembley is fine by me.

So overall I give a 7/10. Crap goal to allow but unlike on Sunday, the attackers paid their dues and we had some scintillating play up front. Now we can beat Hull 20-0 in the home fixture and get on with things.

Adrian deserves to get charged for that cowardly challenge on Ibrahimovic.

And no news for Adrian to be retroactively banned for the leg at Ibra. Really should be investigated and he should be banned.

Typical FA.

Miki - Jose does not trust him yet.
Martial - has been in bad form.
Carrick - he should be playing in the league.
I know at it seems that where ever he goes he has a problem with his flair players.
Ronadlo at Real
Mata two seasons ago
Hazard last year
Mkhi this year
Is it them or him?

Good win for Utd. West Ham were poor but Utd can be rightly pleased. Mhiki is class. United were dominant and 3:1 didn't flatter ye. Pleased to see Martial get his double. Fine player and potential great one. Encouraging signs that Mourinho will get it right at OT.
