shame about the first 3 then.

we can go on complaining all year but the fact is madrid were briliiant at times, so much skill...

So when do you bother with substitutes then? You wouldn't change the team if they were on top - but not when they're behind either! So in your eyes then, subs are only for injuries?

OGS proved in December that he can cross the ball as good as Beckham.</strong><hr></blockquote>

I guess fergie didn't think Ole could do better at the right wing than Becks, not that that should be a problem today...

one of his worst performances for United...

Suppose if he scored that chance, we would have been singing his praises.. thin line......

Great to hear our lot in good spirits after the game.

Nice one. :)

IM SO feckING SADDDDDD!!!!!!!!! AAGRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  :( :( :(

i think keano was the worst united-player today!!! every time he was too late, didn't make any tackles...
Fab wasn't good as well (except for that carlos save)! silvestre was dreadful!! becks too!!

and what about that referee???!?!?! unbelievable, very upsetting!!! twat!!

Gary Neville, bad as he was, had the nerve to kick a lump out of Ronaldo that really ended up killing the fat one's confidence and taking him out of the game. He even slowed Zidane down a bit after kicking him... why didn't we play physically from the start, or at least when they started mocking us in the first half?
--------------------------------------------------
Neil, Ferdinand looked pretty solid, and Giggs in the second half was contributing a lot to our attack. Scholes was not bad either, and O'Shea looked one of the best players out there once he came on. He must be a starting player from now on.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Not a lot compared to them though is it? They were playing fantasy football.

Exactly. If he'd been having a reasonable game,I could understand it - but it was the worst game I've seen Beckham play all season.

Good job Fergie didn't have the attitude that we didn't need subs. in Barcelona then. I mean, Cole could have scored, so why bother replacing him.

The referee WAS bad, but we shouldn't complain, we should have had a player sent off and a penalty against us given.

The worrying thing is that how many will Real score when you can't just defend at OT?
I mean you were pretty defensive but conceded three goals and escaped a penalty kick. And those goals were created, they just didn't come out of nowhere.

Man Utd needs to attack at OT and that will give Real the chance to score the goal that will take them to semis.
Ferguson will have a long night thinking about next game, you're up to a very big and difficult challenge.
Ruuds goal was huge, without it you'd be out already. Still 90 minutes to play, anything can happen.

Gee, when did Ole came on there? 10 minutes from time or something?

This isn't Barcelona and this isn't a final. it's a two legged thing.

Anythings possible, he's got the ability to create an assist..even on an off day.

Lets be honest.. 3-1 isn't as bad as it could have been. We were awful when they had the ball...and got punished for every single mistake. next week we'll have to be more awake.

thank god for Ruud, the lad is truely world class.

We could've been hammered. Its gonna take a VERY different performance from us at OT to turn this round.

We can break their defence open, we showed that tonight but we will need to have a little bit of fighting spirit!

Gary was doing more running than David who looked the shadow of himself (wonder if he´s trying to convince Real that he really isn´t a good investment ;) ).

And the midfield will have to go at them, send phil to take care of Zidane at least he won´t be afraid to come near him. Ryan, Ruud and Scholes were solid as were rio and wes.

As for the goals, nothing really to do about the first one, second/third Raul dosen´t really need minutes on the ball to score, close the man down!

Whem Becks plays against superstar teams like Real Madrid or Brazil, it appears to me that sometimes he is more concerend with making friends than kicking arse. Where was the fire from the 'Pool match?

Well done lads. Great battling performance in the end, giving us a (slim) chance to go through at OT.
Real's passing in the middle of the pitch was awesome tonight. Got to admit that there the best in the business at it.
We went down to an incredible goal, which if he meant, I'll wager that he couldn't reproduce in a hundred attempts. As someone mentioned the goal came at a perfect time for them, when we had them more than a bit edgy. That goal just lifted them, and we looked like being overwhelmed, especially after Scholsey's mistake and a second goal - after just 27 mins.
But, boy did they try in the second half.
Haven't seen Giggsy run round like that for 5 years or more - was he trying to impress somebody or something ??
I thought that Butty was outstanding - the balls he was won was terrific.
Thought the Ref. bottled it in the end - did he book 5 or 6 Reds tonight. Second leg will be tough. We've got to csore first.
Did you notice that against £250+million Real we fielded 6 home-grown players, 7 incl JOS.
Great battling reds, even if we go out, we can hold our heads high. No team in Europe would have stood a chance against them tonight - particularly after that first goal.
Come on you Reds. we can do it.

no veron out for at least 3 WEEKS!!!!! <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" /> :(

WE HAVE SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS NOW...

scholesy out, he looked good today..apart from that one goal.... :(

beckham ordinary
g neville apart from assist ordinary
butt oridnary

no veron for 2nd leg...means we r luking down the barrel...oh well...we got an away goal which MAY be importnat..dont know....

Too much possesion wasted, two soft goals given away (good finishing though) and not enough created. Giggs hardly got a look at the ball in the first half. Carlos didn't allow Becks to turn until the second half, when more crosses started going in. I thought Scholes, Butt and Keane really didn't get hold of the midfield at all giving Zidane in particular way too much respect. Silvestre's distribution was aweful. Basically a very poor first half performance, a little improved in the second and we have a tough second leg. Anyone who says we're out of it is a twat but we need a great performance, not just a good one.

He was one of the few players who didn't look like he was playing in a daze in the first half and who didn't look overawed by the occasion. Ironically, JOS was the other player who seemed to be able to cope when he came on.

Oh and btw, if anyone wants to know, this is how the 2nd leg is going to be:
we concede after 5 minutes, then chase the game score the first before half time, than the 2nd in the 70th minute and chase that 3rd goal until the final whistle.
I haven't decided how it's gonna end tho.

agreed... 3-1, kinell who knows it could have been 3-2. an no way was the match that close.

Imagine if we had a young Robbo for the home leg, he would've sorted them out!! ;)

So you might as well say that we should never substitute Ruud because he can score at any time, Barthez because he can make a great save, Giggs because he might have a good run, Scholes because he's Scholes etc. etc. or indeed any good player who is having a bad game.

Teddy came on first and had at least 15 or 20 minutes.

Anything is possible - but you think scoring two against Madrid will be easy??

Fair point.

We've still got 90 mins to go, if we play to our standards we've got a good chance...

cheer up!!

Hmmm...guess I missed something there. I thought Butt was there to run around and kick them about a bit. I thought he was way to calm about the whole event and didn't close down enough. He was trying to get forward too much. It should have been him sitting back allowing Keano and Scholes to drive forward - but he didn't. Phil would have had a bit more passion IMO!!!

Fine, then don't laugh, no need to give me that mean roll eyes smiley.

Havent had time to read any comments. Just popped in to say this:

We have to hold our hands up and applaud Real Madrid. We worked our socks off tonight but they are a truly awesome side.

They were clinical with their chances whereas we were nervy with ours. They have so many stars in their squad that they've forgotten what nerves are!

Its not over but its going to take the mother of all performances at Old Trafford to turn it round. If we go all guns blazing in search of the 2 goals, they will pick us off. I cant see us keeping them out for 90mins, not while we score 2 goals ourselves.

I have a ticket for the return leg and I'm looking forward to a great encounter. I'm now, however, expecting to progress.

Real Madrid - I applaud you. You are without doubt the cream of Europe. You are what we aspire to become. Well played one and all.

Maybe my s.o.h is too mature.

Hoping people die (and I know you didn't mean it literally) is something out of the playground.

We'll score two goals. Concede more as well.

right, I hope Gerard Houllier manages them next year.

OK ?

FFS, am I the only one that saw that we got hammered in the first half because we LET them, not because they are unbeatable? Remember the first few minutes before their goal, remember how close we came to scoring more goals once we started playing after Ruud's. They didn't outplay us as much as we underplayed them.

My point being that, like our players tonight, we are still giving them way too much respect. If we are required to win any given match 2-0, we know we are capable of that. Why should it be any different against real?

We WILL go through!
