Red Dead Redemption

Oh yeah, that's reminded me of another one of my gripes - horses.

All the tedious commuting on GTA was just about tolerable because you had loads of interesting radio stations to listen to and because you could always keep an eye out for a car that was cooler than your own.

In this game, all you can listen to is crickets and all the horses look exactly the fecking same.

I just found and caught an American Standardbred. All black and as quick as a cheetah with it's ass on fire!

Is there anyway to know which horse we currently own? I know nothing about horses, they all look the same to me and the only one I can immediately recognize as "good" is the golden one that we break early in the storyline mission. The original died so I found one just like it to replace it, but other than that it's always a gamble when I get on a horse...

The only ones worth getting are the Kentucky Saddler, the American Standardbred, and the Hungarian Half-bred. Once you have broken one of these you can buy a deed for it from a store. If you lose the horse you can (re)use the deed to get another.

Those three aside though, all the rest (the 'normal speed' breeds) are pretty much the same.

I caught a horse, but how do you actually make it yours? As in, the one that comes to you when you whistle for it, do you just hitch it and save the game?

Also, I found the tailors, but it's not actually possible for me to buy any shit in there. Surely I've done enough of the storyline to be able to buy suits.

Yep, you just hitch it. If it dies though you will have to find another, unless you have bought a deed for that particular breed.

Oh yeah....you don't actually buy the suits. Go into your start menu and check 'Outfits'. You have to do certain tasks to earn 'pieces' of each outfit.

I actually enjoy the commuting because the scenery is so feckin' stunning.

He's joking.

Where do you find those "special" horses, i apparently got the Kentucky Saddler but i don't know how.

If you did the mission for Bonnie then it's the Kentucky Sadler. It's a kind of tan colour with darker legs and a lighter mane.

If you have broken one of these 'special' horses then it's deed will be unlocked in the store. You can also check the info on these deeds for a description of each horse.

The Hungarian is all white and i've seen them in Mexico. I don't remember the exact location though.

The American is black. I found mine in
Tall Trees.

You can tell the faster horses from the normal ones as they look more muscular, as you would expect.

So you only have to buy the horse once? Nice, I might consider the investment then.

I've still got my Saddler from Bonnie's mission. I won't bother buying the deed until it gets killed.

Is there any difference between the three "fast" horses? Or is getting the Saddler deed all I need for the rest of the game (ie, the Hungarian and American aren't any faster or more durable)?

Of the three, the American is the fastest but has the least stamina and is the least durable. The Hungarian is the most durable and has the best stamina but is the slowest of the three. The Saddler is balanced. The differences, though, are fairly negligible.

That said, all three breeds are still superior to the normal horses in every way.

I suppose the deciding factor for most will be colour. The American Standardbred looks much cooler than the Saddler, i think.

I've just got to Blackwater, weird how there's no big build up to it like with Mexico you basically get told your next mission is there and wander over.

So before i do the missions i did the challenges, i've done the hunting, survivalist and treasure ones and only have the sharpshooter left before my Legend of the West outfit.

Got it yesterday. It's not as cool as i thought it would be but i'm torn between that and the duster coat.

Oh, Jose Gonzalez is awesome. Was blown away by Heartbeats when Sony first used it in their advert and have been a massive fan ever since.

I'm in the elegnat suit at the moment, looks weird riding a horse in a suit.

And just did the shortest stranger mission yet, walk 50 yards to this guy, then walk back. Bit odd.

I've been critical of it's playability but that vid reminds me just how frigging gorgeous this game looks. Simply stunning.

Amazing really. Back in the days of the PS1, if someone would have shown me the quality of the graphics of a game like this it would have blown my tiny mind. And that wasn't really all that long ago!

Just finished Mexico. Looks like I have a hell of a jaunt in front of me.

Killing a bear with a knife was easier than i thought, i shot it in the body and then on my horse got the knife out and started flayling at it when it got close.

It's crazy how close together all the herbs are in the Great Plain, and if you're short of cash find the buffalo herd and go nuts! I took down a dozen and sold the lot for a pretty penny.

It's that attitude that drove them nearly to extinction.
