Rio Ferdinand

It is pretty clear from Roy's previous comments (that he wanted to speak to both Rio and Terry) that he wanted to select both.

If Rio has not been picked then I am assuming that Rio said he didnt want to play with Terry, whereas Terry probably said he didnt give a shit.

I'm not saying you specifically did, the only reason I made that comment is because so many people think Rio is on a pedestal that none other around him can match - and that's not correct.

If we're taking out Terry, Cahill, Lescott and Smalling? No one. I'm not even against Rio being there, my 'beef' is with some of the comments that actually belittle the other players massively.

That's fair. In the absence of all other factors, as you say, you could make an argument for Terry and Cahill to be the starting partnership as they have a growing understanding at club level and Lescott has improved greatly. Personally, given the choice, I would still pick Rio in a big game out of those 4 but willingly admit that's not as convincing an argument as it used to be. He's certainly not the player he was in his pomp and there is not much between the 4 of them.

I just feel for Rio really. I think he has been treated poorly again after the previous shambles with the captaincy and still believe in the absence of the Terry racism scandal he would be going to the tournament.

I agree. I think it was always going to be the case that one of them was left behind and was hoping Roy would ditch Terry to set the right example and create a better group in the England camp but it seems he has gone the other way.

I'd by faaar rather have Rio in the dressing room and just in general, than Terry.

Bet pretty much all of the squad would too. Would change the whole atmosphere for the better

Yeah. I think it's naive if they think that leaving Rio behind will remove the tension. There's probably quite a few players who take issue with Terry and I don't see that changing overnight.

You gotta laugh, no matter what Terry does he's undropable from the England squad. says it all about the English talent when a complete asshat can still be picked.

It really makes me detest the England team seeing him in there and I'm English!

Apart from anything else Terry has been utter garbage

i dont understand rio's omission based on his injury record.

If he cant play every for days why not take him as a backup.

He brings massive experience and is a dressing room favorite.

More importantly imagine England make it to the final stages with cahill and terry at CB and one of them gets injured or suspended. Who would you ratehr have as a replacement?? jaglielka or Rio?? A no brainer for me

What is disappointing is the journos reaction who seem to favor his omission and actually rate jaglielka at international level

That's what I was thinking. Either way, Rio with a dodgy back is still a better defender than Terry. I still have bad memories of a young German team outrunning us at the World Cup. With Terry as one of a partnership there is every chance he will get caught out again. He's looked vulnerable this season.

Anyway it's just disappointing that Smalling's ruled out as well. I would feel reassured if we at least had someone with a similar style of play to Rio's as an option.

Well yeah, you'd have to be on the pitch to be garbage.

He wasn't garbage in the first game, actually he was excellent. As well as in the Champions league games against Napoli, Benfica, and the FA Cup run against Tottenham and Liverpool. As well as some league games.

But he's Terry, so he must have been shit

This is what I think is bollocks, Terry is a national disgrace. Everyone is ashamed of him and if you don't want to leave him out on "innocent until proven guilty" grounds then leave him out on the basis of his previous cuntisms. According to reports and rumours there were very few siding with Terry over Ferdinand in the England camp which shows Terry's popularity.

Terry should never "represent" this country again. If you then decide to leave Ferdiand out on fitness or form so be it but it should have nothing to do with keeping Terry happy.

What previous cuntisms? Please don't mention the Wayne Bridge thing. Rumours?

If Smalling was fit, I'd be perfectly comfortable with taking Rio, Smalling, Lescott and Cahill.

Late to the party...I'm sure this has been asked/answered so bear with me....

If Rio is to be left out, what was Hodgson going on about, when he said, he would talk to both senior players...both are very important...etc etc. Or is it that, he has spoken to both, and they've refused to reconcile, and Roy has been forced to choose one or the either, and gone with John 'English Lion' Terry?

Disappointed for Rio, he's been fit most of this season, and has had a pretty good season, a better season that Terry at least...this would have been a nice send off in terms of international football.

Oh well, I'm not complaining, I would much rather he rest up, so we can get the best out of him again next season!

gutted for rio if he doesn't make it, he has never play in the european championships.

anyway, a good 2 months of rest should benefit him and us for next season.

I was going to get behind England this time, quite like Hodgson

Not now though. Hope Terry gets sent off early in the first match - can't bear to see him fondling his armband in front of the camera for 90 minutes a game

Terry has been shit for large parts of this season and Rio has been playing very well. Why the hell would you then pick a c**** like Terry before Rio? This makes no sense at all and just goes to show how ridiculous some decisions made in football really are. Terry should never have played another match at England after banging his teammate's wife! Is there no integrity left?

Don't think it's that, mate. Fergie said just over a week ago that Rio isn't going because there's no way his back will stand up to the quick succession of matches, playing every three days or so and they wouldn't want the disruption of keep changing the team. so I don't even think it's so much that Fergie has put his foot down but spelt out the reality to Woy, who has probably thought JT and Cahill (if fit) would be a safer bet for the sake of continuity. I'm sure Rio is a bit put out but better in the long run for us.

As an Non-English Supporting United Fan this is great news.

England lose one of their best players, and United get one of their best defenders rested up for the entire summer.

Brilliant!

He's played 30 games in the league this season, an amount he's not reached since 07/08 (although I'd imagine not having European games to worry about past early March would have helped).

Last time he went to a tournament that fat oaf Heskey fell on him and he was out for 5 months, so I'd rather that he stayed him this summer.

Don't let parking the bus vs Barca mislead you, Terry and Cahill have been poor/average this season

Feel sorry for Ferdinand. I have often advocated the implementation of youngsters at the expense of some of the older players, but I don't think Ferdinand should be the first to go. Much more deserving of a spot than the usually underwhelming Gerrard, Lampard, Barry and Terry.

Yeah that's one way of looking at it. But I read that Rio had never been to a Euros, at the tail end of his career, I'm not sure he would have listened to Fergie(if that's how this went down).

Plus England are going to be 3 and out as it is...so it's not that bad. :D

It's been confirmed Rio has excluded himself out of the Euros. Don't know what's the reason for, maybe he doesn't want to get anywhere near John Terry

Rio was holding his back at the end of the QPR game and I doubt he can play every England game so on that basis I could see why he might not get picked. That said Terry has been rubbish so he shouldn't go no matter what.

Terry hasn't been rubbish. He's had one shocker all season v liverpool which was bad but might be explained by extended Fa cup celebrations.
Don't get me wrong, he is a disgraceful human being.
But in stark contrast to that he is a brilliant defender still, even if he's not what he once was.
Guess it's the number of games in a short space that have done for Rio.
