Rio Ferdinand

The senior players at the club need to stand up next season, and Rio will play a big part in that. We want Moyes to stamp his own mark on things and to do things his way, but it's important that the mentality, culture and philosophy don't change to much, and we continue as we have been trophy wise. As I say, that responsibility lies with the senior players, and the likes of Ferdinand and Giggs need a big season. Both on and off the pitch.

Remember when he kicked the ball and hit a lady in the crowd.

Was anyone on here near that?? or remember it live? Saw it on the tele on a classic match the other night I remember seeing it live and going "FWOOORRR Rio you crazy bastard.."

 he hammered that ball...I felt so bad for the lady. Rio did his best to make it up to her, though.

"Oh Fowkin Ewhl RIO..."

 what a lunatic.

Also that game was amazing. Scholes was so sublime and his goal was near perfect .

Weird choice.

Indeed, as was the opposition for Ole's being Valencia.

No idea of the reason behind choosing a random Spanish club...
Espanyol.

Who should it be against? We don't usually play Premier League teams during pre-season, and West Ham might not be up for it. And it would be strange to play Leeds in a game like that! If not any of them, surely the best thing to do is to treat it like a "normal" pre-season game like this.

Unless we had a team from Rio lined up, of course.

The one strange thing is that this is just two days before the Community Shield, but that probably won't be much of a problem either.

Espanyol - apologies!!

I always liked the idea of it being against a team that had a significance to the player's career at the club such as Solskjaer vs Munich.

Granted there isn't always an obvious team but I'd have prefered us to have played West Ham or Leeds for the testimonial.

I read...

@rioferdy5: Blessed to play at #mufc all these years. Being part of this clubs history is something I am proud of! Special shout to the dinner ladies!

...and thought he was leaving

I was ready to make a 'Moyes out' banner.

You can just borrow mine.

Miss the days when testimonials was more af a show piece against an old boys XI or something. Considering that the CS is two days later, then surley there should be a chance of seeing some old faces?
Would love to see Becks and Scholes play, since they should be quite fit.

Shouldn't a player be given a testimonial after he hangs up his boots? I remember seeing 'Rio extends his contract by a year' on twitter and getting happy. And then now all of a sudden this testimonial news gave me a scare.

You get a testimonial after 10 years at a club regardless of retirement.

Giggs had his about 20 years ago. Don't think it matters really.

Has been speaking a bit about youth development in England in the past weeks on twitter. Some heavy criticism of the people in charge and he's made a lot of sense. Need more experienced players/ex-pros like that and there might be a chance to get it changed.

31st of may:
last 10yrs when have England played consistently well? A coaching strategy for our young teams/kids needs to be implemented to see change

In most PL teams retaining the ball is done best by foreign players in the team...they are taught to pass to a man with a man on #DealWithit

So called 'Golden generation' obviously wasn't 'golden'because we won nothing! Great players don't always make great teams.

In Holland they have the great ex players coaching.. Bergkamp, De boer brothers, Kliuvert, koeman etc all coached the next generation

Great players coaching within a flawed system won't change anything either...

Tonight:
"@henrywinter: Pearce: "The teams that come wi their strongest players and internationals to tourns win" > it starts way down the chain fella

For me u should b able to pluck an u18s player out n put him into the 1st team n not have to school him tactically, just school on opposition

Would not happen now at all for us,in contrast if Spain or Germany threw a u18 in he would know his role as these countries have an identity

We have some real talented u21 players too

I think English football has an identity, the heavily testosteroned, fast-flowing end to end game we see week in week out in the Premier League. Strangely enough that identity fails to be translated to the national team partly because the players involved in the PL aren't all English but also and foremost because the England national team always looks to be pandering to some individualities rather than trying to build out a collective. It's almost as if the huge proportion of strangers in the PL means that English star players need to be extra-coveted when they appear for the national side, rather than used to help out lesser players at other positions.

In fairness as well, people are generally too harsh on the England national team.

Ferdinand told the Sunday Sun: "Basically, I could play for another three or four years – or play two or three games for England and be finished in a year. It wasn't a contest.
"I couldn't sacrifice my fitness for the sake of a few more England caps. It would not have been fair on United, it would have been a disservice to the club and to England."
Ferdinand also claimed that he considered quitting the game when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. "Sir Alex leaving did make me think: 'Is it time for me to go too?'" he added.
The centre-back also revealed just how much his chronic back injury affected him. "Two or three years ago people were saying I was finished and I remember those dark days," he said. "I was in a depressive state, I will admit that. They weren't easy times and I couldn't play to the highest standard. You think negative thoughts. I had 18 months of being injured on and off."
He said his two sons, Lorenz and Tate, had been the decisive factor. "My two boys are desperate to watch me playing for Manchester United. That was a big factor. They were being asked at school what was happening with me. They were coming home and saying, 'You aren't leaving are you, Dad? We want to see you playing for United.' It is only now they are properly getting into football. They are six and four and I want them to be able to remember me in a United shirt."

Top player, and a top proffesional. His understanding of the game is second to none, and his ability to read the play, coupled with his positional capabilities make him one of the best in the league for me. Doesn't matter how much pressure he is under, doesn't matter where on the pitch he is, he always has time. Always. You can't coach that.

Like people have said, as one of the more senior players in the side he has a big role next season. It's up to the likes of Giggs and Ferdinand to maintain that mentality and to maintain those attributes that have made us so successful over the years. He has seen everything there is to see football wise, and his leadership and experience will be crucial for us going into this 'new era'.

Quality, that. He didn't come from United and he wasn't a United fan as a kid, but the way he speaks about United, you'd think he'd spent his entire career here. It's great his boys are United fans!

Glad we have him for at least another year. His experience is invaluable, and he's still a great defender.

He's really one of those players that really seem to have grown to love the club after joining us. Glad we signed him, his transfer fee turned out to be an absolute bargain after we finally found his perfect partner in Vidic.

It might be controversial but if I had to choose 1 player to get as a "Regen" Football Manager mode it'd be Ferdinand. A colossal defender at his peak. A lot is said about Ronaldo from 06-09 but Ferdinand was as important during that time for me.

I agree. Rio was quite expensive on his own, but if you couple the fees with Vidic, it was quite a good price for the best centre back pairing in the world at that time. when they play together now, they still look excellent. If they were fit enough to play every week, then the other 3 CB's wouldn't get a look in. Rio and Vidic are still a cut above, in my opinion.

We would have won the league the season if he wasn't banned that season (I don't mean that he should not have been banned btw). Great defender, one of the best I have ever seen, I love his style of play.
