Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Some very intense combat footage from a Ukrainian counter attack on Novoselivske a village about 15 km north of Svatove in the Luhansk Oblast.

Do you mean there is only one such system in the world today, and Germany gave it to Ukraine? And Germany is using zero Iris-T systems in their own military forces?
Yes, Ukraine gets the first produced batteries (which were originally ordered and produced for Egypt, but they agreed to postpone their deliveries to support Ukraine).

Interesting! So Egypt bought a system that Germany did not buy. I don't know much about military equipment, but I'd guess that this is very unusual. For such a complicated, expensive, high-tech military system, I'd expect that the country that produces them buys them first.

Yes I think so... in this case it's possible because the IRIS-T SLM is quite modular and reusing/combining a lot of existing parts:
- the missile is based on the IRIS-T developed for the Eurofighter, it just has an enlarged engine because it is land launched instead of air launched and therefore would lack in range and speed if it didn't compensate that somehow
- the radar is based on a solution which was developed as a surveillance radar for the German military
- the truck all components are mounted on is a standard solution for the German military

Really new components are only the launcher (but let's be honest, that's essentially a bunch of tubes and a bit of fire protection) and the control center, which is the most complicated new part.

So while it's a quite complicated and expensive system, the complicated parts were actually developed for other projects and just combined to create the IRIS-T SLM.

That's where sanctions will work in the long term and why we need to keep the pressure on. It's probably going to take a while longer, but there's more money being lost everyday to these people.

Its been clear for quite some time now that Russia's "elite" holds no real power at all, its just Putin.

Only way this end is when Putin is dead.

For that, a number of disgruntled politicians and generals have to be involved in order to make a successful coup.

They've been "disgruntled" and "concerned" for nearly a year now, and yet they've done nothing except falling out of windows.

The "elite" doesn't have the guts to do anything, it seems, someone just need to act on their own accord and end him.

I've heard that a lot, but I'm not sure personally. Autocratic dictators hold power because they make everybody think that nobody else holds any. When that begins to show signs of not being true, a few are killed but he needs their money and their support to keep going long term. Any leader like putin has looked like they hold all the cards, but the "elite" will be what overpowers him internally in the end.

They are "elite" because of him though. If there is any change, it will come from a somewhat of outsider.

Sweden actually has some IRIS-T SLS missiles in use called Robotsystem 98. They have integrated them with radars and fire control system from SAAB that they where already using for their Hawk air defence systems.

How useful would that one single fire extinguisher be in the event this thing blow up.

It would be useful if a bush nearby caught fire or something like that, not in case something blows up.

For those who don't know, the Swedish system uses unmodified missiles and therefore has shorter range (25km instead of 40km)

Do you know if both the SLS and SLM missiles can be launched by the launchers given to Ukraine? If they can use the SLS version which is basically the air-to-air version with a software upgrade it would quite drastically increase the amount of missiles already produced and available. One of the big advantages of NASAMS is that it can use a lot of different air-to-air missiles like AMRAAM and Sidewinder which are all available in large quantities.

I don't know for sure but I doubt it due to the different caliber (127mm vs 152mm)

Another one. Ukraine must have been able to set up a pretty effective communications network with it's manpads units and air surveillance units for this to be possible.

Indeed. Their ability to thwart the effectiveness of Russian missiles has been pretty impressive.

There you go. I wonder why it took so long and so many mixed messages before Germany posted that.
It's actually not a long time if you consider that imports worth several dozen billion Euro per year have been replaced right now, including building new infrastructure projects like new pipelines and LNG tanker terminals which also cost billions and were done in record time (for German standards).

While Russia continues to waste its military resources on fighting civilian population, Ukrainian armed forces are eliminating occupiers from its territories:

Based on the local sources on the ground the strikes resulted in up to 600 KIA + injured.

Before/after:

Apart from hosting freshly mobilized Russian troops the school used to store explosives/ammunition. The stupidity of the commanders in Russian army has no bounds.

What a stark contrast between this and Putin's speech.
I'm not Ukrainian but this speech gives me goosebumps.
There are so many parallels with this and Croatian Homeland war so all this moves me and bring me back bad memories from the war when I was a kid.

Looking at the latest weather forecasts for Donbass region the temperatures are expected to fall well below zero (up to -20 C) towards the end of the week. The ground will finally freeze, it will be interesting to see which side will try to take advantage of these conditions.

Indeed. Terrific speech to galvanize the country going into the new year.
