SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

The state of this country that with all the whining that's been going on at the government about opening schools, eye tests, castles, vague advice, etc. It's taken a premiership footballer to point out that there are currently millions of children stuck at home who don't get to eat.

This is the one thing I have witnessed the effects of nearly every day the past two months and yet if it wasn't for Rashford absolutely nothing would have been done or even mentioned about something that would have made a bad situation impossible for so many people. It would have almost definitely cost lives.

I know it's only vaguely Covid 19 related but honestly it's something that's been causing me so much stress to think about and the fact a United player has actually stood up to fight for it is pretty fecking amazing.

Just had a comms email at work from my line manager that says amongst other things ...

COVID - Track and Trace : There is no national system but data is being collected and passed into Public Health England. Each Council has to spec their own system to manage/analyse the data.

Erm ok...we'll get right on that.

@MattHancock

He stopped when it got ugly though.
To be fair, top 5 Western EU countries (who have a slightly smaller population that the US) still have a higher death toll than the US. The UK, Italy, France, Germany and Spain combine for 141k deaths, while the US has 118k deaths.

Of course, this counts the official deaths only, likely there is a shitload of other deaths not counted here (I think that the UK has more deaths compared to last years than any of these countries, Spain has stopped counting, while the US has 4000 deaths per week from a mysterious cause aka from covid-19 but without a test).

In truth, all of these countries have miserably failed and have been as bad as each other. Germany has done better, but I still have no idea why is this the case. They hardly did anything more than any of the countries I mentioned.

233 deaths today - still way too high to be releasing lockdown
They know it too.

Is that the period in which the deaths occurred or were counted?
Registered, this is the actual rate of deaths.

Worldometers have over 2000 deaths in India today from Coronavirus. Guessing a weekend backlog and hopefully some backdating of victims.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Yeah some states did a recalculation and added previously unreported deaths.
Wouldnt be surprised if we end up with the highest number of deaths after this is over. Large population and a very incompetent government. People here are out and about like there isnt a pandemic going on. Half the people out on the street are without masks and no one is practicing social distancing.

Thanks for the clarification. Good luck over there :(

A friend of mine that I came into close contact with tested positive on Sunday, as soon as I found out I arranged for a home test kit which I have completed; it has been collected this morning.

Get my results in the next few days. It's certainly a sobering experience to have come into contact with someone who has had the virus.

Feel fine, but have a slightly reduced sense of smell. Could just well be the high pollen count causing a stuffy nose but I usually don't get affected by hay fever. That's the only symptom I have.

How's your mate?

What part of seeing the recent large gatherings has given you confidence that there will not be a second wave? It has made me feel the complete opposite.

Well bank holiday Monday was three weeks ago when everyone was out on the beach yet there hasn't been a huge spike in increase from what I've seen. Think there was a bit of an increase after the VE day celebrations but nothing on the scale of March-April.

Still think winter is the biggest danger but good news at least on a reasonably effective treatment being discovered which lengthens the odds a bit more on actually dying from covid.

Yes, there are rumours that Whitty and Vallance are on the verge of publicly quitting and going large on how badly this has been handled

Interesting. Vallance was allowed to do the press conference today. Which media are reporting this? Those two quitting would be near impossible for government to explain away unlike just stopping health officials who don't toe the line from participating in the daily briefing.

It's sobering that a rehash of Trump's infamous comment has the ring of ironic truth:

'I could be responsible for the deaths of 40,000 Britons and wouldn't get arrested.'

Sorry - I altered Trump's notorious remark that he could shoot someone dead & still avoid arrest. I changed that, and put the words in Johnson's mouth (so to speak).

'Six states are reporting record coronavirus case increases

New coronavirus infections hit record highs in six US states on Tuesday, marking a rising tide of cases for a second consecutive week as most states moved forward with reopening their economies, Reuters reports.

Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas all reported record increases in new cases on Tuesday after recording all-time highs last week. Nevada also reported its highest single-day tally of new cases on Tuesday, up from a previous high on May 23. Hospitalizations are also rising or at record highs.'

Don’t you know, man? That’s just the media trying to screw with our minds.

MAKE AMERICAN GRAVES AGAIN

Incredible how the government refusing to release the number of people tested isn't a scandal.

I don't think they even know. They know how many of various tests they have conducted but many people will have had multiple tests. They also include tests sent out and not yet returned and as we know people often get a test sent but take a test a different way while they are waiting. I'd guesstimate that the number of people tested could be as low as 25/30% of the total tests being reported.

It's not in the media but the civil service is awash with rumours about it. The stinging rebuke from the stats people about the testing figures is a massive humiliation for such senior figures in the civil service and they are said to be livid that these testing figures are still not sorted out after weeks of messing about. the civil service lives and dies on it's ability to report what is going on.

I strongly suspect the number of actual tests is appallingly low - maybe even lower than the % you suggest. Outsourcing some tests to America has been a catastrophic failure, and many care homes have had an appalling time trying to get tests picked up. If that is happening with the simple logistical element can you imagine how fecked the detailed forensic work is?

Given that the test has to be completed within a short timeframe from collection, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that some warehouse somewhere has thousands of invalid samples piled up. If they have created a massive backlog then this can easily get so out of control as to stop even normal activity happening. I suspect it has actually gone backwards as they are doing so much to hide this statistic away. It's a daily humiliation that these stats can't be provided and the fact they PREFER this humiliation to telling the truth says to me something truly awful has happened and hundreds of thousands of tests have been "lost"

IF this carries on for much longer I can see England getting quarantined by other nations just like Macron threatened to do.

Ohh I love insider gossip! I have heard that if they swab your mouth and your nose they have been counting that as two tests which is quite misleading.

That needs to happen to be honest, I just hope it's just England and not the rest of the UK.

That would not work. Either the ban applies to the entire UK or it does not. You could at best ban flights from English airports but people would simply take domestic flights, trains or coaches to Glasgow or Edinburgh and travel abroad from there.

I guess so but it's a pain in the ass for the rest of us in the UK to suffer just because England has fecked it all up.

A very big well done to Marcus Rashford for raising the profile of this subject.

A long time ago when I was at school, I benefitted from free school meals.
My father died when I was 10 and my mother was a single parent with 4 young children to bring up.

Every Monday, when the other children in my class paid for their school meals, the teacher made a point of saying to me when he called out the names, 'oh yes. You don't pay for yours'.

And I remember very well one particular time when I didn't eat something, a teacher pulled me by my ear to the front of the canteen and told everybody 'this boy who doesn't even pay for his school meals doesn't like the free food he is given'.

It was so embarrassing. But I just had to get used to it.

Have you ever wanted to ask that teacher why he wanted to humiliate a 10 year old like that? fecking dickhead.

But then that opens a massive can of worms. There's some regions in England (South West and Essex for example) that have had low cases throughout and are doing better than Wales and Scotland so why should they be punished while people in Wales and Scotland are free to go wherever?

Thank you for saying that.
Yes. Many times. But if I had, I would certainly have been given the cane.
