Almost this, I have my doubts about playing Rio twice in a few days though, better save him for Chelsea.

I can see 8-9 changes, Fergie usually rotates a lot in the CL group stage and esp. with a big game coming up on the weekend.

That's a good point. I was just wondering about the injury Evans came off with and knock Evra picked up. If Evra's fine then we can throw him in for Rio.

With Rooney off after an hour for Owen, to be ready for Chelsea.

Hope for a win to kick start a new CL campaign. 2-0.

Team should be...

GK: De Gea

RB: Fabio
CB: Smalling
CB: Jones
LB: Evra

RM: Valencia
CM: Fletcher
CM: Giggs
LM: Park

CF: Rooney
CF: Hernandez

Subs: Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Carrick, Anderson, Nani, Young, Berbatov

By all means make changes and give games to those that need games but this is the first champions league game of the season so we do need to get off to a good start. I would wrap Rio in cotton wool for the Chelsea game though.

The funny thing is, we're talking about handing games to those who need games like it's a big concern, but the players that haven't played yet are more or less our starting lineup from last year...

I have no worries. Valencia - fletcher - giggs - park is a fantastic midfield. We've gone into big european games with faaaaar worse.

I was referring more to those that think bringing Lindegaard in and playing Berbatov and Owen up front is a good idea. Maybe once the first game is out of the way and we've got our first 3 points but not in the first game :nono:

Yes but this is the main away game in the group, and you can't underestimate anyone.

I would say Sean McGinty makes the travelling squad, without Rafael, Vidic, Evans and Rio possibly rested and Evra having a knock.

i wonder will fergie go with giggs and carrick again against chelsea - it may impact on the side he puts out against benfica

berbatov, park and fletcher should all play.....

its important to get a win if we can as qualifying early in first place means we can rest for the last 2 games

So looking forward to every game now. And how the players who'll come in will perform.

Hopefully if we're in a good enough position in the match, take Rio off at some point in the 2nd half. Give him just enough in this match to get his fitness up, but we don't want to risk him picking up another injury before the Chelsea match. I'd play the above team to give players like Carrick, Fletcher, Park and Berbatov some playing time, and Valencia also.

The young lads have done fantastic up until now, but in Europe it's different, you need a bit more experience.

still doubt about evans and evra, fergie said he have a look at their injuries today to see if they can play in portugal.

I think we'll see Fábio, Park, Giggs, and Carrick come into the side.

de Gea
Fábio Ferdinand Jones Evra
Carrick Giggs
Park Rooney Young
Hernández

Lindegaard; Smalling; Fletcher, Anderson, Valencia, Nani; Berbatov

Ideal subs if we can be 2-0 up in the second half would be Fletcher, Valencia and Berbatov for Giggs, Young, and Rooney.

Toughest group stage game we have, win here and I'd expect us to probably win the group after 4-5 games.

Previous results against Benfica

Man Utd 3-1 Benfica - Vidic, Giggs, Saha; Nelson

05/06
Man Utd 2-1 Benfica - Giggs, Van Nistelrooy; Simao
Benfica 2-1 Man Utd - Scholes; Geovanni, Beto

Why not, do you foresee us having problems finishing top of this group even if we lose in Portugal?

It's our only slightly tricky group phase game on paper so even if we lose there it will be no tragedy because with Otelul and Basel there is no real danger of finishing lower than 2nd (in fact anything other than 1st place would be a shock). I wouldn't play our full strength team because Chelsea on weekend is more important as we can possibly go 5 points ahead of them.

Yeah you're right feck it lets start the campaign off with a defeat

This feels like a proper euro away. Can't wait.

we should never go into a match thinking of losing. :nono:

I may cry for Berba if he doesn't start this game

Will we ever start with 3 in midfield again?

The form of Chicharito and Welbeck pretty much demands one of them play.

SAF said we'd bring in some older heads, so i figure Giggs:

...........De Gea
Smalling Rio Jones Evra
........Carrick Giggs
.....Nani Rooney Park
..........Chicharito

De Gea

Jones
Ferdinand
Evans
Fabio

Valenica
Fletcher
Carrick
Park

Berbatov
Hernandez

Subs - Lindegaard, Smalling, McGinty, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Owen

SAF will have one eye on the Chelsea game so I can see him going with the above.

Last time we started an away game in Portugal in the Champions League we went on to win the competition :)
