Southampton vs Manchester United (11.05.2014)

Giggs has given everyone a run out these last three games so I'm expecting the tea lady to be upfront with the stadium announcer in the hole, Mandy Henry on the wing...,

In all seriousness I think this will be a very tough game but I really want to see Mata, Januzaj and RvP start the rest I'm not at all bothered.

Would like a win but can see a draw. 2-2

No idea about this one. Wouldn't be surprised by any result.

Probably a defeat most likely.

What? I thought the season had finished?

but seriously I think Southampton will be well up for this game. They've had a great season, there'll be a party atmosphere celebrating what they've achieved and they know that at least one two of their English players will be going this summer, maybe their popular manager too. I think they'll go for one last hurrah, and how better than beating Man United?

We on the other hand finished our season on Tuesday, said our goodbyes, turned our attention to Van Gaal, transfer muppetry & WC preparation. Wouldn't surprise me if we lost this one comfortably, 2 or 3-0.

Exactly, little more than a practice match. Southampton can't finish any higher or lower and realistically neither can we.

Give Ferdinand his final game (I still expect him to leave) and maybe Evra if he has decided he's going. I hope Giggs picks himself still for a final appearance if he doesn't stay on as a player-coach, while players who shouldn't be in the WC squads like Buttner, Cleverley, and Young might as well play to make up the numbers and add a little more experience.

Varela, Keane, Lawrence, Wilson, and Januzaj should all start.

I doubt any youngsters will play with the U21 final 3 days later.

This will be shown on the SyFy in the US as they don't have enough sports channels to show all the matches. It really pisses me off that the UK seems to be the only country where you can't watch every PL match:
Manchester United's surreal season has landed them a place on Science-Fiction television channel SyFy for their final game of the campaign.

The Old Trafford club travel to Southampton for their last game as defending champions, but due to a quirk of the Premier League's American TV deal, the match will be broadcast by the channel that usually specialises in fantasy and paranormal programming.

US media giant NBC paid $250million last April to secure the television rights for a three-year period, and on Sunday they will broadcast all ten simultaneous games live.

With a shortage of specialist sport outlets, the network has utilised some of the other NBCUniversal channels that come under their umbrella, leading to the curious scheduling of Ryan Giggs' men on SyFy.

Hull City's game with Everton is to be shown live on Bravo, presumably to congratulate both sides on a successful season, while Fulham and Crystal Palace battle it out on E! - the entertainment channel.

Sunderland's survival party at home to Swansea can be viewed on Esquire... rather fitting for a channel whose major hit is called The Getaway.

I'd say 3-1.Wilson to score his compulsory goal.It doesn't matter whether we lose or not though.
Wilson shouldn't play seeing as the U21 final is a few days later.

I already stated in my previous post that f*ck the U21s league final.First-team minutes should always be the one with higher priority.

Well you're wrong, he doesn't need to start this game when we have 4 strikers and the U21 final is more important.

Daft post.

Well I'm sure you will have many agree with you but for the sake of Wilson's development I don't think U21s final is more important than 60 min or so playing senior football.

With that logic "he doesn't need to start this game" he might well pack his bag to another club because Manchester United will always have enough strikers to compete for the spots without him.

Have to say I'm always a bit of irrational muppet towards giving youth a chance.Bear with that.

We are in the final and Wilson is one of the best players in the U21s, you can't just take him away so he can play an hour in a meaningless game against Southampton. Thankfully, the people in charge will agree with me (I hope!).

I hope Giggs starts in strike and instructs everyone to give him the ball so he can get that damn goal this season

Draw please. Can't risk Spurs throwing their game and we ending up playing that Thursday competition next season.

 What bullshit. You think Wilson would rather get the chance of 20 minutes in a complete non-game at the end of the season than play in the final of a competition which he's worked incredibly hard all season to get us into - despite a lot of people predicting we wouldn't even get close - against another brilliant young side in Chelsea? What's he going to get out of a few minutes in some shitty end of season dead rubber that's so invaluable?

Exactly because it's a dead rubber it's another rare opportunity for a youngster to get another belt in front of a PL crowd alongside senior players, get more used to the tactics,tempo,pressure... at PL level and increase his reputation with the new manager.I've seen us won the U21s PL for many times recently and in all honesty I didn't see much gain for the youngsters who won it.Reminds me of those youngsters who lifted the cup two times in a row but never get a real shot in the first team - Petrucci,Cole,etc,...But if people think winning U21s PL is that great of an experience that's fair enough.I'm a big anti fan of U21s league so pardon me for some undervaluing of that competition.

Would like to see some young blood given a chance, but dosed with some experience as well. Nothing is as crucial as a last day win to at least partially muffle out what's been a dismal season. So as much as I'd want to say "Just play the academy!", I think we need some quality players inside as well.

This looks optimal to me. Give Keane, Lawrence, Januzaj and Wilson some playing time. I'd especially want to see more of the latter and how he'd fare against slightly stronger opposition. RvP and Mata in to add class and give Giggsy a chance to take a bow.

I predict a comfortable win for us, just because, really. We're the better side and it's been poor/inexperienced management that's been getting in our way. Giggs is a bit tentative and has been picking the lineup wrong due to being very close and personal with the squad. But I think that the second he stops thinking as their teammate and starts thinking as their boss, he antes up a bit. That's what I see happening versus Southampton.

2-1 win for us.

Lawrence as a DM? That's.. interesting..
Fecked that one up, maybe swap his positions with Giggs? Not traditional for either one, but hey.

As far hard as it is to work with, I'd really like to see that exact lineup on the pitch.

Ehm... few problems with this. In no particular order:

-Absolutely zero defending going on ahead of the front four. We'd be torn open.

-Lawrence, a very attacking left winger/#10 is playing as DM for some reason.

-The kids shouldn't be playing this one. Let them properly prepare for the U21 final which they've worked so hard to reach all season - I guarantee it's much more important to them. And it would be vastly overrating the value of a few minutes of first team football (and vastly underrating the intelligence of our coaching staff) to suggest that playing this game is going to make a significant difference to their careers.

-For me, Giggs seems to have made his bow, and clearly signposted it with his little end-of-match speech. Plus he won't have the legs to keep up with Southampton's game, especially not from a starting berth.

-Is Rafa back and available? I hadn't heard anything to that effect.

-Giggs said he wanted to give everyone a fair go during his four matches. There are good senior players who haven't really had that yet - Welbeck, in particular. He should be back in the suit for this one.

We should go with something nice and sensible, solid at the back and with a combination of Mata/Kagawa's guile, some pace and directness on the wings (Januzaj and Welbeck, for me) and a start for RVP up front.

What I would like to see:

De Gea
Rafael - Smalling - Evans - Evra
Januzaj - Cleverley - Carrick - Nani
Kagawa
Welbeck

Lindegaard - Vidic - Valencia - Giggs - Mata - Young - Van Persie

What I think we'll see:

De Gea
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Valencia - Cleverley - Carrick - Welbeck
Mata
Van Persie

Lindegaard - Smalling - Fletcher - Giggs - Young - Januzaj - Hernandez

De Gea
Varela--Smalling--Vidic--Evra
Carrick--Cleverley
Januzaj--Mata--Welbeck
van Persie

Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Valencia, Fletcher, Giggs/Young, Kagawa, Hernandez

The 1st team have nothing to play for, what is the point of putting them in the 1st team when they have a very important games on the Wednesday?
If the team was playing well then the pair of them would not be getting a look in, your argument is flawed on every level.

It may not mean too much to you for us to win the U-21s. But the kids have tried all season to get to the final and it will be a big deal for them to play in this game. If they win, then for many this is their first big trophy in their career. If they lose, they can learn from this experience and go stronger as a result.

De Gea
Rafael - Smalling - Keane - Evra
Cleverley - CM
Januzaj - Mata - Welbeck
van Persie

want to see the youngsters again but unlikely because of the u-21 final. so...

--------------------lindegaard-----------------------
valencia-------ferdinand-----vidic-------------evra
--------------carrick-------giggs------------------
------januzaj--------mata----------kagawa-------
------------------van persie----------------------

subs to come in : hernandez, cleverley, welbeck

If we win we might end up in Europa next season.

Come on Southampton.

I'd like to see him get it, would be a nice way to end the season, and probably his career.

If the PL had stayed at 22 teams then there's every chance he'd have 1000 games for us too.

It's a shame that this game isn't on a saturday, three days rest might have been enough for the wednesday U21 final.

Still a good 30 minute sub appearance for Wilson, Lawrence and Pearson or Janko or Rothwell would be a great experience and do no harm to their fitness for wednesday.

Young men should be able to run all day, everyday, anyway!

Can't see Lawrence or Wilson getting back-to-back run-outs, especially with the final on Wednesday. Reckon we'll see something of one or two other kids, but maybe from the bench, again to avoid knackering them out for wednesday. Andreas Pereira is my wildcard shout.

Wonder if Keane will get some playing time if he opts to give more players a league debut. He has done well out on loan this year and would be great to see him get a chance.
