Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fanny and Alexander are three accessible films to start with, then move over to stuff like Persona, Cries & Whispers and Autumn Sonata, after that pretty much in any order.
Cheers, babycakes. I know I have a recording of Wild Strawberries lying round somewhere, so will finally get on to watching it.
The first 50 minutes or so consisted of way too much new age crap for me but I thought the rest of the film was quite interesting.
Agreed, it doesn't become interesting until Wally first interjects. I think all that previous talk then becomes entertaining/worthwhile because of how he subtly calls Gregory out on his bullshit.

I was surprised by how much fun "The Seventh Seal" was. I hadn't planned on running into that sort of humor.

Looper:

Enjoyable time travel film. It has a reasonable balance between action and drama, so don't go into it expecting an action film or you'll probably be disappointed! There are a few niggles if you want to nitpick, but that could be said for most time travel films, so it wasn't really an issue for me.

Overall it's worth a watch, but if Bruce Willis and time travel is your thing then I'd point you towards Twelve Monkeys.

The Master…… Can’t decide whether I loved it or hated it, regardless of my indecision it was one of those movies where I kept thinking about it for the rest of the day…. I’m beginning to think Paul Thomas Anderson is just fecking with his audience, I’ve read multiple reviews, some have given it 10/10 and some 1/10, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such disparity in opinion….. probably cause nobody seems to really understand it, as I didn’t. One thing is for sure - Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman were absolutely brilliant in their roles, no doubt they will be featuring and probably winning come Oscar time….. though in all fairness Phoenix can play crazy really well cause he is a bit nuts in the real world!

Final destination 5:

I liked the first two films in this franchise, mainly due to the fun and inventive way that fate catches up to the characters. By the 3rd one, it had got a bit stale. I watched this last night as I was bored and it was on sky movies, and it was reasonably entertaining, although obviously nothing new.

I can only assume it was made for 3D because some of the death scenes had things flying at the screen and the cgi looked a bit naff. Didn't really spoil the film though.

Overall, the film is worth watching for two reasons:

1) The eyebrows on one of the lead characters would put Solius to shame. They were mesmerising me every time the guy was on screen.

2) The Laser Eye Surgery scene. Ouch!

Oh and the end of the film was good for reasons that have to be spoilered.

Was quite good because it finished where the first film started. I thought that was a nice touch.

Few films I've seen lately:

Taken 2 - Was ok. Some good bits, was never going to be as good as the first one. 6.5/10

Exam - Low budget film which takes place in a room for the whole duration. Felt it was quite intriguing, and defo worth a watch, with a smart script and quite a bit of suspense, despite it not being horror film. Good ending too. 7.5/10

Looper - Very watchable, good ideas, some cool affects. The comparison that it's the new Matrix is a myth, as it's nothing like The Matrix. 8/10

Why? Is she funny or something?

You don't think she's extremely attractive? I'd marry her if I could

I thought Looper was pretty terrible for what it's worth. Predictable, stupid plot holes etc..

Taken 2 - Pretty awful overall. It somehow managed to lose everything that made the first film interesting/enjoyable and became a boring action film... with terrible action.

The first movie worked because it was a simple plot with a very clear end goal, and it was entertaining to see Neeson do some batshit crazy stuff/investigating to get to that end goal, and in the end it had a rewarding payoff... This film doesn't really do any of that. Nothing in it is batshit mental, it's pretty much always perdictable, and basically decends into "here are goons for Neeson to shoot movie". It's a very bog standard action film at best... but it falls further still thanks to it's 12a rating, which means all actions scenes are shakey as hell, and you have no clue what is happening half of the time, or sometimes, how people are actually dying. Overall, very disappointing stuff.

Hunger Games - I was fairly suprised by this. I thought it was just going to be a direct Battle Royale rip-off, but it certainly had a lot more going for it. In fact, I found everything up until the actually "Hunger Games" scenario to be qutie interesting/entertaining. I like the idea of the world, why they were doing it, the idea of sponsors etc. and it got me interested/excited to see what would happen in the "Games" portion of the film. It all sort of fell apart from there however, and not much of the Games stuff was all that entertaining. The film did a very decent job of building up/giving depth to it's main two characters and the people surrounding them... that all the other kids in the games were just faces who I didn't know and so didn't mean anything to me, which meant their eventual deaths meant zero. In fact, I never really got a proper sense of the jeapordy of it all... sure the idea that it was a fight to the death was prevelant, but I don't think they showed that idea well enough. Still, decent for a "young adult" flick, or whatver they're classed as... though it's no Battle Royale!

The Muppets - I don't really care for the Muppets, but this was pretty enjoyable for what it was. Loads of breaking the 4th wall and some gags that were fairly decent. However, due to the sheer number of cameos in the film, it basically became a game of "spot the actor/actress" for me... and the actual movie/muppets themselves became a bit background.

The Avengers

It is not going to win an Oscar, but I thought it was good.
Story was OK if very predictable, apart from a smack on the head broke Loki's hold over whatever his name was, that was just daft.
I suspect we will be in for another round of Superhero films for the next few years, Iron Man 3. Thor 2 and Capt. America 2 and then all meet up again for Avengers 2 in 2015.

All in all a decent enough film.

7/10

Devils Rejects

Sod all story to it, a crazy hillbilly family like to kill anything that moves, leaving a trail of dead and mutilated bodies in there wake.
One of the craziest films I have seen, but I loved it and the sound track is outstanding.

I've been waiting for your review....glad you liked it. You should have watched 1000 Corpses first though.

A shame you'll have watched them in that order, although if you liked Devil's Rejects, you'll probably at least enjoy 1000 Corpses. But beware, it's pretty fecked up (not that Devil's Rejects is an ode to normal people, having said that).

Taken 2 - 6/10

Wasn't ever going to match the first one, that remains a great film as a standalone. This is just one of those movies they thought up to make some money off the back of a huge success, I've got nothing against that and I knew that before watching it. Decent action flick, stole Drive's soundtrack in a couple of places.

Brick - Brilliant. Totally pulled me in to it's rather farcical world and was incredibly entertaining. Some very good performances, especially from JGL, and the direction and score was top notch.

Also - even though I just called it farcial - I loved the film noir aspect, and it was done very well. Its made me want to rewatch L.A. Confidential... which is never a bad thing.

House of 1000 Corpses.

It had no plot, just basicly, meet people and kill them in a brutal way.
It is a sick film, brutal death and shit loads of blood. What a crazy film, did I like it, hell yes I loved it and I loved the music

Not a film for everybody, in fact I would say very few.
Only watch it if you like lots of blood and gore.

I'll do you a favour though and tell you to not bother with any of the Rob Zombie Halloween films.

Saw the Avengers for the first time a few days ago

6.5/10

Terrible story, weak villains, no suspense. It had some good laughs along the way and some transformers like action.

Hesher - Spencer Susser (2011)

Heshy was a good idea and had its moments, but it ultimately became a pretty corny affair, especially the sequence of events that leads to the end. Almost got laughable. The Gordon Levitt geezer created a good character but I think the director and storyline fecked it up. I'm thinking this could've been way way better. Definitely worth a watch though.

6 cocks up.

Fair summary.

Argo A really really good yarn.. Based entirely on true events apparently, well made, well executed, if you're up for a good auld story, this is ideal

6 US embassy workers in Iran flee out the back door as it's being stormed by a mob during the 1980 coup, they hide out in the Canadian Embassy while CIA try to come up with an extraction plan.... what they eventually come up with sounds like an absolutely ludicrous idea, but its what they go with!

A very solid 8/10, easy to watch and very enjoyable

Just saw The Thing- the remake/prequel thing on SKy Prem. No way is it a prequel, it's a lame ass remake.

How the hell did she 'know' the guy at the end was an alien cos his earring was in the wrong ear? They had made a big play all film that the alien couldn't replicate non-biological matter, eg fillings. Seems a bit of a naff end to a mediocre film to me. Some films are best left not remade.

I said the same when I saw it, if you had not seen the original it would of been a much better film.
I think the only way you have any clue it is a prequal, is during the end credits, when they are chasing the dog.

He didn't have an earring in either ear at the end, when she quizzed him about it he reached for the wrong ear thus he couldn't just say "oh, it fell out".

And its a prequel.

Saw Goonies for the first time last night, it's a cult film for a few of my friends but I never saw it as a kid. If I had, I would have loved it I think, and I very much enjoyed it. Even though a lot of it looks a bit old now, and some things are really locked in the 80s (hairstyles, music, clothes...), it has that intemporal quality about it. And it's funny seeing Sean Astin and Josh Brolin's young faces. The only thing that annoyed me a bit is some scenes where all the kids are yelling at the same time, it's torture for the ears, and goes on a bit. Must have been hell to direct a group of kids.

Also saw Ted and was happily surprised by it. The story is shit, as with most of Seth Macfarlane's stuff, but that's not the point. The humour is pretty good and had quite a few real laughs. I'll forget it pretty quickly, but didn't consider it to be a waste of my time, was a good 100 minutes.

Spot on. The Goonies is one of the those films (along with Die Hard) that I will always watch when I see it on tv no matter how far in it is. Classic.
