Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

It was ok, but just a bit random. Have you seen the film, and if so, what did you think?

I really like it. It's a sports film where the 'sport' very much takes the centre stage, which I quite appreciate. The characters are pretty much all cliche's, but they're all generally well acted enough that it doesn't bother me. Plus, it's meant to be this larger-then-life sports movie, so they're probably quite neccesary.

Like you said though, the football scenes are the best part of the film... and as they dominate a huge part of the film, I think that goes a long way as to why I like it so much. I'm only really a passing fan of American Football, so maybe it won't hold up under scrutiny from a proper fan, but for me, it felt like a good dramatisation of how mental and American Sports franchise could actually be.

I saw Raging Bull for the first time recently and I was rather underwhelmed.

Best sports movie, I was reading through the posts and thinking, "Why the feck has no one mentionned Rasta Rocket?!" Checked imdb and Rasta Rocket is just the French name for Cool Runnings! Wicked film, used to watch it over and over when I was a kid

You crazy French bastards!!

Cool Runnings is probably (in fact, I'll go with definitely) the film that I have watched the most in my life. I used to watch all the time when I was a kid... and I'll still watch it once or twice a year even now.

The French do that all the time, change the title to another English title which is just crap. "The boat that rocked" was called "Good morning England" over here.

Want to watch Cool Runnings now, haven't seen it in ages. This weekend maybe!

More on Raging Bull . . . meh!

After receiving mixed initial reviews (and criticism due to its violent content), it went on to garner a high critical reputation and is now to some extent regarded among the greatest films ever made, including by Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, renowned British motion picture historian Leslie Halliwell, the American Film Institute, Time magazine, The New York Times, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Empire magazine, Total Film, Film 4, and BFI's Sight and Sound. It was listed in the National Film Registry in 1990, its first year of eligibility.

Best sports films: Semi-Pro and Talladega Nights!

Kill List fecked with my brain. Watched it about a month ago, we had some friends over and we thought we were just popping on a thriller about a hired gun and his job. It's a lot more than that, you really have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it.

The Dark Knight Rises: Excellent and just as epic as expected, falls short of a 9 due to one small plot point I had an issue with. Apart from that lives up to the hype and expectation. A must see.

8.5/10

Just finished The Dark Knight Rises. I would agree with Bams rating. Excellent film to finish off the Nolan trilogy. Good luck to the next person to take over the franchise because it's going to be fecking tough to come up with something on par. I greatly enjoyed Hardy's portrayal of Bane, though I had nothing to go on besides knowing the character broke Batman's back in the comics. I think he did an excellent job as one of the better comic book villains we have seen in move today. I was even surprised by Hathaway's Catwoman character. I had low expectations but thought she played the part well. Great film all the way around. I would say it's the best comic book movie I've seen so far. I'll have to go back and watch the previous film again as I have forgotten much about it. Ledger's Joker was brilliant.

Looper 7/10 Good flick. Kind of dragged on in the middle, enjoyed the ending, however, couldn't....

...he of just blown off his hand instead of killing himself?

The Grey

I really liked this one. Good story, Liam Neeson was perfect and it was a sparse script well acted by the support. I loved the whole atmosphere and the complete absence of CGI or silly monster wolf puppets was perfect. This is one of the better films I've seen in a long time. I even think the ending was spot-on.

8/10

The Dark Knight Rises The film doesn't get going for 2 hours, even the opening set piece is dull and silly] and when it does the action is underwhelming with a rather silly ending. Chop an hour out of the first 2 and you would lose nothing from the plot but gain the will to live again. I wish that I hadn't bothered. 2/10

Concur totally.

The Emporer's new clothes............

What the Dark Knight would've been, if Keanu Reeves had played the Joker.

LAWLESS:
Thin script, but well acted and full of atmosphere.
You'd see more in an episode of Boardwalk Empire, nut you can forgive that for the escapism it affords.

Great movie, though I feel like its one I won't ever really want to watch again. Maybe once I guess.

Flight

Stars Denzel Washington as an alcoholic airline pilot who pulls of an incredible manouver mid air to save most of the people on board. Most of the film focuses on his own personal trauma and substance issues amid the backdrop of impending legal proceedings regarding the crash.

Good but not great in my opinion. Denzel does a good job in portraying a man in a very dark and hopeless place in life. There's some random comedy moments interspersed, as if to give the film a more heartwarming tone, but they really don't make any sense at all. It's also exceedingly slow and the end is so predictable you'll guess it correctly about 45 minutes in. Still though, nice film that shows the tragic consequences of addiction. There's a particularly poignant scene in a hospital stairway with a cancer patient, high point of the movie for me.

6.5/10

The Dark Knight Rises - A decent, entertaining but rather forgettable affair...a bit like Batman Begins. Many parts felt rushed and the dialogue was pretty hammy at times. Metal face wasn't that good of a villian but I liked Catwoman, she probably put in the best performance in the film. The ending was fairly meh as well. Probably the weakest installment in the trilogy all things considered.

Probably?

And 3 hours with only about 30 minutes of plot.

Wow, you guys are nuts. Maybe you've expected better but giving it only a 2 out of 10? That's madness. What do you expect from a movie? To literally get blown out your socks? I get that it wasn't a smart movie for the movie buffs in here but being that harsh feels like wanting to be contrary to the masses. Thing with movie critics is most will give a higher rating to an "intellligent" foreign arty farty film that was filmed with a potato and actors the director found at his local grocery store than to a film that has any kind of good CGI in it. It seems like a modern trend.

I didn't expect an arthouse film, I expected to be entertained at least to some degree. I expected not to be utterly bored for 3 hours. It wasn't fun, it wasn't exciting, the plot was slight, silly and dull. It was utter shit basically. Thus the 2/10.

More fool me because of the 4 of us who started watching I was the only one stubborn enough to keep going to the end.

Well, that's where we differ then. I was thoroughly entertained through the entire movie. I've honestly expected better aswell reading some reviews but I don't think it was bad at all, let alone a 2 out of 10. With that rating it would mean that it's close to the quality of Saw 9 or The Final Destination 14 or some shite like that. Hell, even Giant Octopus vs Flying Piranhas probably has a higher rating. But to each his own.

I'd be really interested to know what Wibble rates as the worst movie he has seen as that is the type of score I would give to one of the worst movies I've seen.

I'm also not sure why its so hard to say that a movie didn't work for you and give it a 5/10 and move on. If you are giving TDKR 2/10 where does that leave you to go with other movies? What would you give some of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise for example? Or even an Ed Wood movie?

It really is a bizarre scoring system you have.

It's not really a modern trend, people have given higher ratings to films with a more lasting impression than your average CGI type of film for years and years.

Dark Night Rises just wasn't that good but I wouldn't rate it as harsh as Wibble did, a 7/10 film I'd say. I enjoyed Looper the other week much more.

I'd never watch those so I can't compare but in terms of an action film I think that if something like True Lies is an 8 or 9 then this is a 2.
