Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Robocop 3. I actually never saw the ending and now I remember why. What a horrible, boring piece of garbage. This movie just doesn't have a single redeeming feature. 1/10

Finally got around to seeing Captain Phillips last night, thought it was absolutely brilliant. Totally captivating in a very simplistic and linear way - largely down to Hanks and good simple writing.

Amazing story that needs no embellishment or frills; for me much more enjoyable than Wolf, Hustle, 12 years et all... though that may be down to much lower expectations.

Just watched a film called The man from Earth, probably been seen by a few on here? Story of a guy about to move out, his friends (professors of a university) come to his to throw him a goodbye party and he reveals he's a caveman of 14.000 years old who's survived to the present day. The acting is dodgy from some of the actors (some are very good though), the production is cheap and the cinematography, editing and all that stuff is pretty poor... but it's incredibly thought provoking and just sucks you in. It's one of those rare times when I just didn't want it to end, I wanted him to carry on talking. Really great surprise, really enjoyed it.

It's an absorbing one, aye, despite it's flaws.

Finally got around to watching 12 Years a Slave and I can't say I was overly impressed. The non diagetic music was poorly chosen, some of the dialogue felt forced and melodramatic, the fight scene with Fassbender was weird and Brad Pitt was an incredibly distracting addition at the end. On the plus side Ejiofor and Nyong'o were good, especially the latter, Paul Dano's song was great and there was some decent cinematography.

134 minutes of Paul Giamatti would have made for a better film.

Is that the one where he flies? I vaguely recall it as being bloody awful.

I agree. Thought that was the most enjoyable out of the Oscar bunch this year.

In Fear
I dont know how this has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It starts off well and build tension brilliantly but once the stakes are raised it becomes your average maniac stalker psycho thriller in the vein of Eden Lake. I thought (from the trailer) that it would have elements of supernatural phenomena but its actually a thriller more than a horror. I found the acting quite wooden (especially at the first 30 mins) and the character decisions/motivations were pathetic. Maybe its because I expected too much but I really didnt enjoy this film 4/10

Nothing Left To Fear

Too slow and once the horror starts it's painfully boring with shoddy effects. I'm not a big fan of using CGI in horror, especially when the budget is clearly not suited for it and this hasnt changed my mind. Generic, bland, unoriginal and boring with some terrible acting. I'd give it a skip 3/10

I thought it was good, not great. It just gets a bit too daft at times for me, but the core story is a good one... also, I could have done without the "turn" at the very end - thought it was a bit needless.

Yeah agree on the ending, it was a bit stupid. Only part of the script that didn't work for me. I guess some parts of it may appear daft if you take a step back, but honestly I was completely immersed in the film and engrossed.

Non-Stop - An aptly titled film that pits Liam Neeson against the worlds fastest texter. It's totally proposterous, but if you leave your brain at the door and just go with it, there's a fair bit of fun to be had here. It's exciting, there's tension, there's a fight in a aeroplane bathroom, and it has the hottest 53 year old in Hollywood - Julianne Moore in it (yes, you heard me). In terms of a totally disposable March release, you could do a whole lot worse.

Yes! Someone who feels the same as I do!! She is hot

Camilla Long reviewed it in much the same way in the Sunday Times. She spent the entire piece saying what an utterly preposterous and terrible movie it was, before giving it 4 stars 'cos "feck it, I enjoyed it!" (paraphrasing there)

When did Liam Neeson suddenly become the new go-to action movie star. Its like he is the new Bruce Willis or something, every trailer I see for a prefab action movie seems to have him in it.
I think Taken turned him into the bonafide action star when it comes to films that require a hero that looks slightly smarter than your average Statham

Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson - Robert Altman (1976)

Vintage 1970s Robert Altman and americana cinema where he takes Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Sitting Bull to take the piss out of "western" American history as told by the victors and entertainment entrepreneurs.

"The White Man Stole the Truth"
- Sitting Bull

Enjoyed the feeling of the 70s western cinema, though it felt a bit dated at times. The scenes with Sitting Bull were brilliant and as a farce the film worked quite well, being both humorous and at times, subtly hard hitting.

8 cocks up

Threads - Early 80's English movie about a nuclear holocaust and its effect on Sheffield and its residents. Never even heard of it beforehand so didn't know what to expect. Its set as a documentary with a timeline appearing as it progresses. Its grim as fook but an incredible effort i thought. Really enjoyed it. Probably not for everyone. 8.5/10

Watched this a few time, it is excellent, I agree with your review.

Blood Creek

Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill...Joel Schumacher. Crazy fecking C-grade horror film. Nazi's, viking runes, zombie horses Completely terrible, but enjoyable to see Fassbender completely ham it up in a pre-fame role.

Ender's Game

A little surprised by this one as I was expecting it to be crap, its by no means a great film but it has its moments and unusually for a kids film deals with some slightly dark subject matters. A decent watch although the emotional parts don't really work and some of the dialogue and acting is a little hammy there is still enough of a decent narrative structure to make it watchable. A decent kids movie no more, no less.

That sounds like good fun, I'll watch that soon. Hadn't heard of it before.

Dark Touch.

This was billed has a horror film , but to be honest there was not much horror in it, for me it was more what happens to somebody after years of sexual and physical abuse.
Set a remote town in Ireland, eleven-year-old Niamh finds herself the sole survivor of a bloody massacre that killed her parents and younger brother. Suspecting a gang of homicidal vandals, the police ignore Niamh's explanation that the house is the culprit. To help ease her trauma, dutiful neighbors Nat and Lucas take her in with the supervision of a social worker. Neve has trouble finding peace with the wholesome and nurturing couple, and horrific danger continues to manifest.
Missy Keating who plays Niamh was excellent.
The first 20 mins are the best after that it goes downhill, but still it was a decent watch.
It is a hard watch in places, very disturbing.

Not the best horror film you will watch but it is also not the worst.

5/10

Some of you watch some pretty awful movies.

Do you guys not check imdb ratings or something similar? Or you do but want to make your mind up?

I mean, I don't think that imdb means everything and plenty of times I think a film is under-rated or over-rated on there. But, I doubt there are many films on there under a 7 which I'd say are decent.

I always check imdb but only to see what the film is like, I take no notice of review or rating, I prefer to make my own mind up.
Read my reviews you will see I am a sucker for a bad film.

The Haunting of Helena / Fairy Tale.

A single mother moves into a new house with her daughter. Soon after the young girl has her first baby tooth fall off, she begins to recount that she is having nocturnal visits by a tooth fairy. It seems the house has a sinister history.
The first half of the film was good, creepy and suspenseful and when you get to see the tooth fairy it was really good, then the film takes a different course and is set in a mentel hospital, still ties in with the main story.
The acting is decent enough, there is a nice twist at the end , which I did not see coming.
I think I would recommend this if you like spooky movies that are not run of the mill, and low on gore. Good story.

6.5/10

Tracks

Young woman walks from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean for reasons not entirely explained. The film is very slow and has little narrative tension because things kind of go well for her, relatively speaking. Cinematography is brilliant and the landscape lends itself well to the story, could've done without the shots of Uluru. Mia Wasikowska is the lead and Adam Driver the support, I like both of them but this was the longest ninety minute film I've seen in a while.

Doesnt this also have Linc the Sink from Prison Break? If so, then that plus your review makes it a priority on my list!

The fact that ConAir hasnt got 10/10 on imdb makes me not take that site seriously! Also that and the fact that I love B rate shit films...

I have wanted to see this for a while but the tooth fairy aspect puts me off... you have changed my mind and I'll be watching it soon!

Cool Runnings has a 6.8 on imdb...

I don't think anymore needs to be said.

I never really refer to imdb. I'll normally have a good idea from word of mouth or even just by the plot/cast involved whether I'd be interested in the film.

There's always gonna be a few exceptions, generally comedy films.

Or what about Stoker - which was one of the better films I saw last year. Currently has a 6.9 on imdb, but I would rate it much higher then that?

There's always stuff that's going to be low scoring that just grabs your fancy. Southland Tales I've just discovered has a 5.5... but it's a film I get immense enjoyment out of, despite the fact that no reasonable person actually should.

Then there's your generic actioner - that are good for some brainless escapism (like Safe or The Wolverine) which you could end up enjoying more then you should. Or films that betray a lot of peoples expectations - like The Grey, that are actually really good films - but not what people wanted them to be.

I'm getting rather lucky with these random films coming to my head that are below a 7 it has to be said....

Thing is that films are so subjective that votes are not always the best way to see if you want to watch a film or not. Your better off reading the base plot and looking at who is Directing/writers/cinematographers etc if you really want to play it safe. Otherwise, I think its best to just jump in after reading the story as its always better to make up your own mind.
