Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

EDGE OF TOMORROW

Really enjoyed it. Seems OBLIVION has soured people on Cruise Sci-Fi. Damn shame, as this is a good'n.

Los Cronocrimenes (2007) - Time travel 'caught in a time-loop' style movie that just didn't quite work. The actions of the lead were just plain stupid, and at times down-right cnutish. It starts off quite promising, but just doesn't go anywhere, so you are left waiting around for an 'a-ha' moment that never arrives. 5/10.

Love Streams - I went to sleep right after watching and kept dreaming about it, imagining new stuff so I'm not sure what's real anymore, lol...Anyway, I thought it was good watch, complex, emotionally bare...Gena Rowlands is so frightenly good at playing mentally deranged people that you sometimes wonder if it's just acting.

Three drunkards clowning around on primetime tele. Talk shows were better back then.

Gainsbourg was the best at this. He frequently appeared absolutely smashed on TV, once burned a 500F (about 100€) note on a show, told Whitney Houston he'd 'like to feck her' live, completely messed up a play-back cos he was lighting a cigarette, told a woman who was flirting with him 'I'm a bit like Mickey Mouse: I have big ears and a big tail', and so on. Good fun.

Edge Of Tomorrow is a solid action movie that doesn't bore with too much talk about irrelevant shit. The 178 million budget went into a good cast, realistic way of showing huge battles that doesn't look like a CGI cartoon plus a composition of scenes well put together and mixed into condensed fun.

That scientology brainwash really help Tom Cruise in getting into his sci-fi roles with convincing amount of passion. Immersive and pacey storyline that quickly reminds of classics like first Starship Troopers movie and Groundhog Day. Tom must feel like in his underground anti-alien invasion home-bunker during the shooting. Very comfy with his character and world on brink of destruction around him.

Emily Blunt's moments of absolute badassity is a standard motive during the watching. It's a strong female character that pushes pacing even further not to mention this magical colonial marines vibe from Aliens mainly thanks to Bill Paxton who almost steal the show through his 'Full Metal Jacket' attitude and pretty much everything what he does is helping in reaching the atmosphere of slaughter during the times of war.

Not too complicated but catchy story with elements of invasion and counter offensive with parts about time travel through some little bit of pseudo scientific crap that only Tom Cruise thinks it's reality... and he is resurrecting his career in a good way thanks to Oblivion and Edge Of Tomorrow.

Good stuff. Very likeable sci-fi that may remind some classics from the 80's in some part. This and Dredd proves that there's a plenty of space for solid adult brutal movies in vein of Paul Verhoeven's Robocop, Starship Troopers or even Aliens.

EDIT: If someday there will be a super production adaptation of Warhammer 40000 then they already have a perfect source of inspiration how to make Space Marines and their heavy gear. Words of highest praise for that.

Er... I don't think his career ever wane enough for a resurrection of any sort. He's been solid since the days of Top Gun (at least box office wise)

World War Z
I'm never listening to you muppets ever again. Thought it was an excellent Zombie film, one of, it not the best zombie films. Considering I'm used to the terrible Walking Dead Series, this was light years ahead. Glad I finally got round to watching it. Brad Pitt was very good. 7/10.

It was great entertainment - how apocalypse movies should be made.

Mind you, the 'willing suspension of disbelief' muscle got a good workout. I don't understand how the airlines were such excellent vectors for transmission of the virus. Did the zombies hide in the loo during the flight? And that gravity defying climb over the 50 foot high wall around Jerusalem. Wow!

The final half hour, which was entirely re-shot, was gripping. The studio made a wise decision to go small.

Let me put it that way: He's not resurrecting as much as he's reinventing his action movie style by playing in the recent sci-fi productions which is definitely the right way to go. Another Mission Impossible chapter is a stagnation and the news about the imminent fifth one has to be joke.

He feels great in sci-fi, he likes this challenge and thanks to that he's becoming more than just another generic action actor. It definitely makes him even cooler than he was before though I really liked Minority Report from his past roles.

In a shorter way - Sci-fi makes him better and more and more he's becoming a leading figure in that genre.

Sorry i got u wrong, i just think since his scientology stuff, he got personally more attracted into scifi personally, and since he can make his interest comes true, he made moee of them lately.

If i have the cash, i would made films that i find myself interesting myself

No problemo. He still got time in shifting to another genre with his fame status and resources. He's also not getting older and still doing all his stunt scenes perfectly. He'll probably stick around with action sci-fi till he wakes up from the scientology notion. Never too late for that but I honestly enjoy his adventures to stop aliens from destroying earth. I really do.

He's been a Scientologist for about 25 years I think. I think the fact he's doing more Sci-Fi recently is probably because there are more big budget Sci-Fi movies who can afford him.

I've still got that Gainsbourg biopic on my computer.

Oliver Reed was partial to some drunken tv appearances as well.

Is Lone Survivor any good? It looks like jingoistic nonsense, but I'm hoping it'll be an exciting war film.

It's a decent movie. I don't think exciting is the right word for it, just tells the real story of that navy seal team, their decision and what happened afterwards. It's a Hollywood movie, so just existing without any patriotism is probably asking too much, but it isn't completely one-sided. It's not a patch on Private Ryan for example. Some scenes are a bit silly or over the top, while others are a bit too heroic, but I don't think it dominates the movie.

Darkness Falls
This film felt like the Resident Evil gaming series. It starts off really well, quite scary and suspenseful but soon turns into a horror thriller full of cliches. Decent concept, let down by the execution 4.5/10

Eventually got round to watching Her and Dallas Buyers Club recently which were both excellent. Also watched Rush, which I found to be distinctly average. The characters appeared to be unbelievable, albeit Bruhl was a good watch.

Tell No One - a decent foreign thriller with a strange soundtrack. 5/10

Broadcast News - FFS, it was The Newsroom the motion f*cking picture, complete with a love triangle and everything. Holly Hunter was cute but William Hurt getting nominated for an Oscar for this was quite bizarre.

King of New York - An excellent little cult gangster. Gritty, ambitious...sorely underrated, I think.

I stumbled upon this on youtube by accident a few weeks ago. Great film and funny as f*ck too.

"Did I say I was finished? I want something to drink, maybe I want some birch beer, you got any birch beer? I don't even know what that shit is."

Yeah, Abel Ferrara is a criminally underrated director. I far prefer his New York schtick to that of Marty Scorsese's. Very funny dialogue and situations in his films as well, amongst all the grittiness. Has always seemed to me to be a sort of "guerilla" filmmaker.

Saw that twice now. Great fun.
I still wonder how zombies have superhuman athletic abilities.....

Anyone seen "How to Train Your Dragon 2" yet?
My kids want to watch it and I'm debating whether to wait for the DVD or bring them to the cinema to see it.

The only other film of his I've seen is The Addiction which I thought was nice but too impregnable for me due to it's heavy philosophical content.

Ferrara's most famous work is Bad Lieutenant. Driller Killer was I believe his first film and was quite a jolt at the time. Can't believe it would make many waves nowadays. Don't know if Tarantino has ever mentioned him, but I'm sure he must be a big fan. The Funeral and especially, Mary, are two other great films. Ferrara has a massive body of work. I can't even remember what else of his I've seen. Good actor as well.

The Returned
Decent zombie flick. Not your usual affair, and I commend that it tried something a little different. Of course, there were some problems and the ending was a bit predictable but the journey was engaging and there was some excellent cinematography here and there. The director clearly used his budget to the full. Would recommend for zombie-film fans 7/10

The Andromeda Strain

A group of scientists investigates a deadly new alien virus before it can spread.
Not seen this in years , still enjoyed it, yes it is a bit dated.
Good 70's film.

7/10

Lust, Caution - possibly the best political thriller I've seen and one of the best films from the 00's.

Edge of Tomorrow - 2.5/5

Just saw this one and it reminded me of the movie
Source Code.

The way Tom Cruise keeps dying and becomes alive was slightly overdone IMO.
It was funny the first time, the second time but then they killed it...Besides, some of the parts with Cruise and Blunt were stretched and that last bit where they "assemble a team" only for them to die without contributing to the movie as a whole was pretty poor.

All in all, a decent one time watch with a seemingly interesting plot but I wouldn't watch this one if there was something slightly useful to do :-P

EDIT:

What's the spoiler policy on here for the newer movies? Are we allowed to discuss the plot without spoiler tags? Basically, can whatever I've posted be outside the spoiler tag or is it a good idea to stick to the spoiler tags?

Enemy Man sees his doppleganger in a movie. He tries to find the actor and bizarre and nonsensical pretentious bollocks follows. Avoid at all costs as you will never get this hour and a half of your life back. And something about spiders. 0.5/10

That is what I thought. I was very very wrong. And I like arthouse movies.

Not as bad as "The Loss of Sexual Innocence" mind. A film so bad I am still getting the piss taken out of me for renting it 15 years ago.

The Last Wave - A pretty adroit rain-soaked supernatural thriller. It contained a little bit too much mumbo jumbo for me though and it didn't leave much of an impact on me, except for the ending, perhaps.
