Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Better Angels - It was so Malick-esque that I started to wonder if he actually directed it under a pseudonym, and it did have the usual goods and bads of a contemporary Malick film. Rather forgettable in the end, lovely score tho.

Following - Being a big Nolan fan I felt obliged to watch this as this was the only one of his films I'd never watched. Enjoyed it, kind of confused me at one point alight it may have been intentionally like that. Really reminded me of memento the way the story was unfolded but not identical obviously. 7/10
Which bit confused you? I must say I didnt think it was much like Memento at all but it was the second Nolan film I saw - after Memento. I guess now in retrospect I might see more similarities, certainly more than with other subsequent films like The Prestige or the Batman films. I think Memento and Inception have more in common in the way he plays with time. Though in terms of the production and feel of it, yes, Following is probably closer.

Yeah it slightly confused me that he and Cobb burgled the woman and then it turned out that they were 'together' but then obviously it was revealed she was playing him. It's pretty simple really I guess but when I watched it I just got a little confused as to whet her true intentions were at that point and why she was doing what she was doing

Really liked that Cobb character BTW.

Maybe the Memento comparison was a bit off, I just though the way that the story unfolded was kinda reminiscent of Memento for me anyway.

I can see why you compare the two for sure. It's a very good film.

Yeah both are really good movies. Nolan is by far my favourite director right now.

Whatever people may say about Inception, TDK trilogy, Interstellar etc I think they were all terrific, entertaining movies.

Would love to know what his next project will be...

The Culling

This was the blurb that got me to watch it " A terrifying supernatural thriller in which a group of college friends on a road trip find themselves fighting off dark forces at a remote farmhouse after a chance encounter with a strange little girl. "
It was OK , not really terrifying at all and with minimal supernatural in it, you pretty much knew what was going on from the start.
Very average horror.

4/10

Late Phases

A wounded war vet moves to a place where people are dying from mysterious circumstances.
A werewolf film, you find this out pretty soon, Ambrose McKinley, a cantankerous blind vet, moves into a retirement community only to learn the residents there have been dying, not from old age, but from dog attacks. After surviving his own encounter with a canine one night, Ambrose comes to believe the assailants are much more than mere dogs.
the film is more about McKinley, than about the monster and Nick Damici plays the part very well.
Worth a watch .

6/10

Is she?

Film always looked bad though, Will Smiths hanging on the fringe as the top bankable lead recently. His film choices have been woeful.

Is she?
.
She was unreal in Wolf of Wall Street but even nicer in this movie. Those lips

Guardians of the Galaxy - Brainless and fun. 7/10
Thor 2 - Brainless, fun and Natalie Portman. 7/10

Both were decent, neither was great. Pretty much what I was expecting from standard superhero movies. I liked Thor 2 slightly more than the first Thor. Loki was great, again!

Focus
Was disappointed considering I normally love con films. Was kinda pointless but the ending got me, didn't see it coming. Margot Robbie was smokin' hot though! 5/10

A Million Ways To Die In The West

Surprisingly made me chuckle a few times but every time I hear Seth Macfarlane speak, all I hear is Brian from Family Guy. Charlize Theron was smokin' hot though! 5.5/10

The Culling
Average horror flick. A bunch of 'teens' caught up in some supernatural trouble on their way to a festival. Made me jump once. I have now seen JD from Friday Night Lights three times in a film with the same plot  5/10

Art Of The Devil

A girl is knocked up, raped and abandoned by a wealthy construction man and then makes a deal with the dark arts to haunt his family. Was a decent plot and could have been a good film if it was handled by someone that had a bit more filmmaking noose. Story plot was all over the place during the first half but gets better as the film progresses. Worth a watch 6/10

Wild - Always liked Reese, loved her in Walk the Line and she was great in this too. Interesting movie and some nice scenery too. Whilst being good it wasn't that thoroughly entertaining, giving it a 6.8/10

Started Interstellar.....and had to change the volume like 4 times, so decided to feck it. Goes from Zimmer overload to not able to hear dialogue to EPIC SOUND EFFECTS to silence....this bloody Chris Nolan.

Try and find another time to watch it where I can just leave it superloud all the time.

Kingsman is absolutely brilliant. Not enough people here have watched it it seems.
I know, right? Really fun movie and the way popcorn movies should be made.

Well, it was a jazzed up Agent Cody Banks remake, wasnt it.
Not sure what movie that cody banks is, but if you like a light hearted movie with a good mix of humor and action, this is it.

According to interviews, Nolan did it on purpose for some scenes. Just seems to be crappy sound to me all movie long.

Of course he does it on purpose.....since he's been doing it for four films now. Just outrageous I couldn't get through 5 minutes of the opening though.

Cymbeline - I couldn't get through the first 20 minutes. Struggled even with subtitles. May re-watch someday. NA / 10

Interstellar - Saw it in theatres when it came out, saw it again digitally. Solid movie, if not slightly overrated/overhyped. 8 / 10

Interstellar is not a movie you should watch on a plane, or and small screen for that matter. Needs to be on a big screen and loud.

Godzilla (2014) - A giant bore that seems more focused on proving how great the US armed forces are. Godzilla is hardly shown, when he is it quickly cuts back to the fecking soldiers who have zero personality. Also, unless I missed it, there's no explanation for why Godzilla fights the MUTOs. The plot is stupid. Really disappointed by this since the trailers looked so impressive - 3/10.

There's 2 more direct sequel to the "Art of the Devil" iirc, they're related to the main story, you might want to grab them as well

Foxcatcher

I find it extremely boring, sure the acting by Ferrel is disturbing, creepy and dark, but I do not feel any connection between Mark / Dave and Du Pont, I can't decide what character Mark is, and neither can I dissect Dave other than he's a great coach and probably are indifferent towards Du Pont. I can see Du Pont's tortured soul, but I can't see what is it that he wants? He got all the attention he can get, he got all the money he can get, not to mention he will get enough adulation from anywhere else, and there's not enough reason for him to just do what he did (there's not enough aggravation from Mark / Dave for him to be pissed off)

5/10

Constantine TV Series

Kinda enjoyed the first 4 episodes, I'm glad they potrayed him as Bad Ass with actual magic instead of just using his knowledge of things. The chicks are bad though so far, hope it get better. Will there be some tits involved? I guess not :(

Yeah I got those both on the HD, will be watching them at some point although the plots seem unrelated... You seen them? Any good?

As I recall, the whole trilogy is intertwined, and it's a direct sequel (the story continues) I might be wrong, it's been a while.

If you like Asian horror, I suggest you see Rigor Mortis
Yes! Seen that one, it's brilliant. Very unique also.

Focus - I enjoyed the premise and Margot Robbie is fit as but that's where it ends, definitely needed about another half an hour to develop storylines properly, everything seemed too rushed, things happened but they didn't really tell you how or why they happened/were happening. 6/10

Its a pretty subtle but very rewarding film that takes a while to really pick up in terms of pacing so I would definitely recommend watching it again if you can. As for your points in relation to the movie:

Both the connection between the Schultz brothers themselves and also their connection with Du Pont is supposed to be frosty and very dysfunctional.

One of the opening scenes where they are wrestling gives hints (again very subtly) as to why this is and it would appear that there is a lot of jealousy coming from Mark, but very little from Dave over the reverence with which Dave is held in the sport in contrast to Mark. As for their relationship with Du Pont, Mark is there for the initial adulation and importance that he is being given by his role at Du Pont's ranch and being selected by somebody with such wealth behind them, Dave seems to be interested in having somewhere for his family to settle as it seems he needs to constantly move his family due to Olympic team commitments where as a link up with Du Pont offers the chance of a stable base to train Olympic wrestler and get paid.

Du Pont's reasons are a little more difficult to grasp accept where you take into account his relationship with his mother who seems quite overbearing and is into her Horses and doesn't seem to think much of his own personal sense of ambition or drive(and ultimately despite his efforts to impress her she doesn't think much of Wrestling either), he begins to see wrestling as the sport of the common man (as opposed to Horse/Equestrian sports which are far more upper class sports) so the opportunity to both impress and exert power among working-class young men who would never have seen such wealth as his before is a clear motivation for getting involved with both brothers and Olympic wrestling (he could never have done the same in Equestrian sports as he would be dealing with more wealth, more educated athletes). In the end it looks like a vain attempt to impress his mother with his authority and mentor-ship of young athletes.

As for why he does what he does ultimately that is open to question, but there are strong hints throughout that he suffers from mental illness (he was later judged to be so) and so his unpredictable behavior throughout is in keeping with the more extreme end of that condition. So if you see it through his distorted world view as with the gym scene where Du Pont pretends to be coaching when his mother enters the hall, you could say he sees Dave Schultz as a threat to the false image of himself that he so desperately wants to be true, he wants to be "a coach, a mentor, a father" to paraphrase him, but both his social awkwardness and lack of coherence as well as lack of any real knowledge of wrestling gets in the way of his ambitions.

It really is a brilliant but subtle character study of all three characters. A firm 8/10 for me but that is just my opinion and I'd urge you to watch it again if you have the time.

PS Typo, its Steve Carrell giving a very good performance as Du Pont.

Exodus: gods and kings (2014)

shit movie... nothing new to see on this one.

Jesse Pinkman character was the worst by far. Monosyllabic plus his beard was made from pubic hairs.

Agree with all of that. I too thought it was really good, I would probably agree with the 8/10 too. I think I rated it that in here also...

I saw it last night. It was a fun film, although a little cheesy at times. It manages to keep you on your toes wondering who's conning who a few times too.

Nothing special, but entertaining enough to be worth watching. Also, Margot Robbie is incredibly beautiful

Focus - decent film, worth watching but I expected slightly better. Thought the first half was better than the second half of the film, although I liked the ending and how it played out. Some laughs, Will Smith good, Margot Robbie  - 7/10.

FOCUS - Its just dreadful. But Margot Robbie is the hottest woman on earth.

Watched Focus this lunchtime. Was a decent movie. Thought I had figured out what was going on twice only for the rug to be pulled from under me.Relatively runny too.

Also Margot Robbie

7/10

I quite like the fact that they went a bit against convention in these kind of films by having one big - telegraphed after the fact - con... instead, it was just another con, and how these two characters played off each other during it

But yeah, for not having any expectations I quite enjoyed Focus. It's fun, has some good humour, there's a scene at a NFL game that's great, Will Smith is playing a character that Will Smith should play, and Margot Robbie is incredibly (incredibly) hot.

What do people think of Margot Robbie's looks, if only there was some way of knowing!
