Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I thought it was terrific. Just finished watching it, and although I'm not a Will Smith hater, I feel Foxx did a much better job than Smith could ever have done. Sure it was OTT and a bit mentally violent, but what do you expect from a Tarentino flick? Di Caprio muct be now ranked one of the best movie actors on the planet and yes Waltz was very very good.

I'll admit I did have to look away at the;
Dog scene, that was just sick and when it flashed up again later it caught me out. Thought the ending was great with Stephen getting what he deserved the Uncle Tom prick. Special mention to Samuel L Jackson there too as I'm not a fan at all and I thought he played that perfectly. The only bit which was too stupid for the story was convincing the guards to let him go and give him a gun.

All in all, highly recommended - 9/10
Aye, DiCaprio just owns every role he has now days. Gotta be the best actor out there, still no oscar though.

Anyone else find the Indiana Jones films not all that good? Watched Raiders of the lost Ark, was meh. Thought I'd give the Temple of Doom a try and turned if off after 30 mins. It just involved a blonde woman screaming a lot, driving me fecking insane.

Raiders and Last Crusade I think are both really good, The Crystel Skull is just barely watchable and The Temple of Doom should just be deleted and forgotten.
They are meant to be making a 5th film

I enjoy the first three, though admittedly, Temple of Doom is pretty poor. It's just that it was a film I watched a lot when I was a kid so it's kind of a guilty pleasure film now. Raiders is a brilliant action movie, great intro, good rhythm, don't know how you didn't enjoy it! As for Last Crusade, it's one of my favourite films full stop, it's the perfect adventure movie in my opinion, and the chemistry between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford is great.

Absolutely hated Crystal Skull though.

Korean cinema is more miss than hit, to be fair.

That's definitely true. I enjoy a lot of Korean films, but everytime I watch a great one, I get of get that sour aftertaste because I think to myself 'ok, they're making some great films, but at what price?' The cultural policy Korea has adopted to favour its own films, the measures of cultural protectionism it has set up, really don't go along with my conception of artistic creation and freedom. They're even more extreme than the French cultural policies (which is saying something!).

I suppose I should just enjoy the pictures and not have that in mind, but I always find it difficult.

I agree, easily the best of the lot.

Raiders was the best of the series by some distance. The Last Crusade suffered for the introduction of Connery IMO as you only need one star in a film like this and the Guardian of The Holy Grail bit was really dumb. Temple of Doom is a bit silly but no more than you expect in an Indiana Jones movie and some of the stunts are great (if silly). The less said about the last one the better.

Beasts of the Southern Wild - What a fantastic little film. 90 minutes flew by.

It won't be for everyone as, at times, there isn't a whole lot going on, bar these characters just living out their lives on the marginalised edge of society, so if that doesn't interest you then it won't be the film for you. But I personally was gripped throughout, thanks in large part to the performance from the girl who plays the lead. She's captivating... it's a truly excellent performance, and from a child actor (makes it 2 for 2 in that regard after I recently watched The Fall... though the girl in BotSW puts in the superior performance) who's never acted before.

Also, it's pretty incredible the results you can achieve on a tiny budget these days (this had $1.6 million)...

I thought Crystal Skull was just slightly better than Doom, I found Doom just really silly but agree about the stunts they were good.
Connery in The Holy Grail was a master stroke after the rubbish of the second film.
The Guardian of The Holy Grail was just part of the Grail legend and an integral part of the story.

Django Unchained - Tarantino continuing his fine work. Inglorious Basterds was a gem of a movie and Django Unchained is similarly a brilliant film. The dialogue is witty as with most of Tarantino's films, the story develops well as does the film's characters, the acting is top drawer and you can see that Christoph Waltz is slowly becoming one of Tarantino's favourite actors to work with. For me, Tarantino kind of lost his way with Kill Bill 2 and Deathproof, but now is back on form and I'm dead excited for Kill Bill Vol. 3

Inglorious Bastards is my fav Tarentino films, but very close is Kill Bill 1 and 2.

Looks like Vol 3 wont happen.

I hate Kill Bill 2... it's incredibly dull. If it was anyone other then Tarentino behind it, that movie wouldn't be half as popular or liked as it currently is. Kill Bill 1 was decent though.

Grabbers An Irish horror/Sci-fi/comedy very much in the Saun of The Dead mould only not with zombies. Not as funny but still a worthy effort well worth watching when nothing much else is worth watching. An excellent job on a low budget. 7/10

What a weird statement. It Tarantino wasn't behind it, the film would have nothing to do with what it is. It's quintessentially a Tarantino film with a lot of his personality in it, and that's why it's loved by quite a few people. I can understand the "dull" criticism, though I also think QT has a penchant for those kind of slow, talky films (Jackie Brown, Deathproof, IB to a certain extent...).

I'm saying that I think people like it because it's a Tarentino film, rather then because it's actually a good film. Which isn't that weird of a statement.

And all QT films are talky, but they're generally not dull... I don't think you can accuse Jackie Brown and Inglorious Basterds of being dull films anyway.

Kill Bill v2 is just a bad film in my opinion. Poor story (with totally stupid elements thrown in) poor characters, poor acting... which could all be forgiven if it had the fun/flare/excitement factor that the first film did, but considering it was his "american" piece, it had none of those elements.

I think quite a few people accuse Jackie Brown of being a dull film actually!

And sure I understand your statement, I know what you meant, I still find it weird. I like it because it's a Tarantino film, for sure, but I think you're switching things around: I don't think 'it's a Tarantino film, therefore it's good' (which is what you're trying to say, I think), I think it's a good film because it's a Tarantino film. By that, I mean it has Tarantino filmmaking characteristics that I enjoy (the dialogue, mixing up genres, brilliant actor direction, ability to lead the audience where he wants, originality) and that's why I enjoy it. I just think the way you phrase it is a bit weird and a bit of a sly dig at its fans.

I'm not having a dig, I just think people tend to cut it a lot more slack because it's a Tarentino film. You obviously don't, but I'm sure there are people that do. It's the same-way that I'll cut anything with Denzel Washington slack... because it's got Denzel Washington in it.

I think a large problem with it actually is that Uma Thurman just isn't a very good actress, but whilst she was able to hide that a bit in the first one, she gets exposed a lot more in the second.

King Of New York (1990)
..with Walken, Fishbourne, Snipes, Buscemi.

Love it.

Seven Psychopaths - A Coens/Tarantino-esque film done in the same fashion as Kaufman's Adaptation...Gangster slash meditation on writers block and storytelling. It was very twisty, turny...quite enjoyable and drew a few laughs (Sam Rockwell was a real live wire, probably the standout performer in it), but I felt the humour was a bit too crude and in your face at times. I think it could have been a lot better and it probably looked a bit better on paper but it just never really came to life on the screen.

How was Colin Farrell in it?

Yeah, he was alright. I wonder if Harrelson's character's remark about his character's moany face was really aimed at Farrell. I thought Walken was a bit meh though, very inexpressive and lifeless performance.

Why, oh why do I even post in this thread when I make such terrible school boy errors.

Worst thing is I love Pulp Fiction and it's one of my favorite movies so how did I forget that great scene? I was right though, Walken would make an excellent QT actor!! ;)

Loved Skin I Live In, RN. Thought it was a modern day Frankenstein. Elena Ayana was fantastic as the mad scientist's creation.

I watched Drive last night.

Everything is really quiet during the talking and SUDDENLY REALLY LOUD DURING THE CAR SCENES.

Ryan Gosling's script must have been about one page. All he kept doing was staring at things with a stupid smug look on his face.

Yeah... it's beautiful isn't it?
