Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Seven Psychopaths: Good dialogue with a passable attempt at a movie constructed around it. Some genuine funny momments (most of them from Sam Rockwell) but ultimately not enough of them to raise it above an average and slightly disjointed movie that does not reach anywhere near the heights of In Brugges at any point. Needed a more coherant and interesting plot to raise it above a decent black comedy. A little disapointing considering the expectation.

6/10

Agree with this. Rockwell is pretty much the only reason to watch it.

Seven Psychopaths - A Coens/Tarantino-esque film done in the same fashion as Kaufman's Adaptation...Gangster slash meditation on writers block and storytelling. It was very twisty, turny...quite enjoyable and drew a few laughs (Sam Rockwell was a real live wire, probably the standout performer in it), but I felt the humour was a bit too crude and in your face at times. I think it could have been a lot better and it probably looked a bit better on paper but it just never really came to life on the screen.

Yep, it was very Kaufman-lite. I'm a fan of his existentialist output but this didn't even fully commit to it nor did have an interesting enough plot in and of itself to hold my interest for 2 hours.

A better example of something like this is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which has a clever noirish plot, great dialogue and interesting characters to boot.

Disappointing from McDonagh because In Bruges is a personal favourite and I saw The Pillowman at the Curve theatre a while back and thought that was excellent too.

I really enjoyed the actual "short stories" that were littered within the film. Thought they were quite dark and twisted... whilst being presented in interesting ways.

Also, the performances were all very good... Rockwell is the stand-out (as he is in most things) but Walken, Harrelson and Farrell all contribute. Just thought that some of the comedic beats in the film fell a little flat, it dragged in places, and the overall story wasn't as strong as i'd have hoped.

I did actually think that stealing someones dog and returning it back to them for the reward is a pretty clever idea.

You could make a living doing that if you stick to affluent neighborhoods.

Yeah, I didn't mind that premise, or the writer/seven psychopaths premise... just didn't think the direction it went was as strong. For starts, I wasn't a huge fan of ending up in the desert.

The Descendants: Good performance from Clooney and the largely young main cast. Nice little drama, well worth watching.

Or brilliant.

Haven't seen the Descendants, but I was surprised to see that the scenario, which one the oscar, was co-written by Jim Rash who is the Dean in Community! Deancredible!

Drive was alright but very much style(s) over substance. The silent protagonist wasn't pulled off that well, I thought. It was a far cry from Alain Delon in Le Samourai and Takeshi Kitano in most of his films.

Watching Amour tonight, if it's anywhere near as good as SILI... I'm in for a treat.

I thought Gosling was brilliant, more than pulled it off.

Anna Karenina - I appreciated it for what it was, a lavish visual spectacle. Excellent cinematography but I thought the two leads were pretty awful and the script was a bit threadbare. I haven't read the book so I can't really comment on any iconoclasm.

Moneyball - One of the best sports films I've seen in ages.

I really enjoyed it as well, but didn't you find it a bit overrated? I mean, if you take it at face value, for what it is, it's good entertainment, a really interesting film about a certain aspect of sport history, but don't you think all the accolades it got (oscars and nominations...) were a bit too much?

Just saw Flight. Denzel Washington is really good in it.

Nice movie - 7.5/10.I'm not such a big fan of dramas, but this one definitely worth seeing it.Denzel never seems to disappoint. John Goodman  was great.
And I can still smell the alcohol.

I enjoyed this movie as well, thought it was going to be about something completely different but the addiction theme was very well worked.

Definitely.

It's hard to make baseball exciting though.

Watched Skyfall last night. As a Bond fan I found it very enjoyable, and I thought Javier Bardem was excellent as Silva. Will probably get in on Blu-Ray when it comes out, but I was very impressed.

Django tonight, after the gym. Looking forward to seeing it.

The Hobbit Loved it. It did great justice to the book and was a great deal of fun. Martin Feeeman is perfect for the Bilbo role and the casting in generalmis excellent. They could possibly have cut out much of the Radagast the Brown scene but other than that the pacing was brilliant and even with that the nearly 3 hours flew past. If the remaining films are as good this will be a classic trilogy.8.5/10

Probably... but people do like a good Sports film, and it is a good sports film! It's also quite academy/awards friendly... in that it's based on a (remarkable) true story, it's got good actors in it giving good performances, and it has a bit of a feel good factor about it.

Is it deserving? Probably not, but meh, I still enjoyed it regardless...

Anyone seen Gangster Squad yet? Off to see it tomorrow I think...

I enjoyed Cloud Atlas, which I wasn't expecting to. Shame about the dodgy makeup and terrible accents though. It would've benefited hugely from not having recognisable faces, but I imagine part of the financing depended on it. Takes a while to get into mind, I tried to watch it 3 times before I eventually got into it...and, naturally, had stopped laughing at the eye taping Orientalfication of Hugh Grant.

I also enjoyed it despite its obvious flaws and yellow face bits.

Django Unchained - 10/10

I loved it. It was hilarious at times, the scene where they're all wearing makeshift KKK masks was brilliant. I've heard some people say that it was too long for them but the 3 hours flew in for me.

Seven Psychopaths - 8/10

Seems like I liked it a bit more than a few of you. The little stories of each psychopath was really well done and Sam Rockwell was brilliant as always.

I can't help but wonder how necessary it was to have all the same people play all the roles. Obviously the central ones need to be connected, but the some of the smaller, more ludicrously made up or racially cartoony parts did nothing but take you out of the film, and frequently, make it unintentionally hilarious.

The pacing and editing was pretty good though, as was the acting, and I was very sceptical when I saw the trailer that they could pull it off as well as they did.

Could've done without the Tom Hanks fireside narration bookends though.

Don't know what it was about Cloud Atlas. Everything about I should have hated, yet I couldn't stop watching it. The best story arc for me though was Broadbents Cavendish.

Killing Them Softly - 3/10

I was bored to death most of the time just praying for the movie to be over.

wish I had read this before ... i agree that it was strange ... and very boring, laced with random violence. avoid at all costs. 3/10

Thankfully also saw Life of Pi in 3d.

Avatar like cinematography with gorgeous views of marine life in the vast ocean. Many say its gonna win oscars galore and for film craft, deservedly so, but there are issues IMO

At its heart it seems to be a simple story - an allegory about a boy and a tiger that masks an horrific experience on board a drifting lifeboat.

However, the structure of the piece means that when the truth is finally relayed in the film, all its impact is lost in the confusion of what has gone before.

Instead of shock, I felt only irritation that the two-hour allegory had been so unambiguous and had given no hints to the truth which - for maximum effect - should have immediately become apparent in the telling of the second story.

So instead of feeling illuminated by the end, I felt cheated and disappointed. I felt the writer and director lost sight of the most important emotional arc and thereby diminished any impact at the end a beautiful film.

Would you say it's worth watching in 2D or is it better to hold out for 3D?

hold out for 3d.

The film has flaws but the cinematography (India and the Pacific ocean) and film-craft is as good as anything before and and is breathtakingly gorgeous.

Some wonderful acting, from both lead and supporting actors too. I especially enjoyed the role of Pi's mother, played by the Indian actress Tabu. Nice cameo from Gerard Depardieu too

And that makes Life of Pi a must watch.

Perfect for 3D

concentrate hard in the final scene when Pi is in the hospital bed, else the whole point of the film is easily missed

Killing Them Softly (2012):

Good film that at times over plays its hand but manages to make some interesting parallels along the way. Nothing spectacular, but expecting that would be completely missing the point of the film. If Unforgiven is an anti-western then this is an anti-gangster movie that does a solid job of showing what is essentially an industry like any other whilst it is going through a recession. Good performances all round, I was considering giving it a 6.5 but took that up to a 7 based on Pitt’s final speech which topped off the movie perfectly. Definitely worth watching.

Yeah, I think many people are completely missing the point of the film. It's a satire, not a traditional gangster film. The title couldn't be more misleading though.

Yeah, judging by some of the reviews on the last page unfortunately that is the case. I think some were expecting Good Fellas 2(i'm not sure that movie doesn't exist). I guess I can understand that given the trailers as well, I just believe in judging the movie I saw and its a good one despite some flaws.

Django Unchained 7/10
I understand Tarantino's love of pulp films. There is a difference though in paying homage and outright emulating them. A huge step up from Inglorious which felt like a set of stage plays, but it the middle dragged on to long and whilst I enjoyed, it's one that will be forgotten quickly and sure as hell doesn't deserve the Oscar nominations.
