Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The movies were boring and I don't think the TV series is all that.

Shadowdancer good actors and a promising premise but they made far too little of it and in the end the characters were insufficiently developed to make the ending convincing. It would have made a much better mini-series. 7/10

Just watched Zero Dark Thirty. I really liked it. Those 25 minutes when they raided the house was pretty fecking awesome. To transfer that whole sequence to the big screen is just brilliant. 8.5/10

I was a bit disappointed with the raid, it almost felt like a made-for-TV reconstruction of the event.

A question I've had recently while reading this thread: those who post regularly in here, when talking about recent films, have you usually seen them in theaters or is it DVDs/Blurays/overmaybenotsolegalsources? I wonder cause the perception of a film when watching it for the first time can usually be affected quite vastly whether you've seen it in great quality in a nice cinema or not (well it does that for me), and I know that France is one of the countries where people go to the pictures the most in Europe, so I was wondering if it was the same in England or others countries...

I rarely go to the cinema as the selection of films in rural Sweden is quite shocking, and I'm too poor to afford buying DVDs. I think there's a slight difference in perception between seeing it at home and in a cinema, especially when you're watching a comedy.

Last time I went to the cinema was to see Cars 2 with my kids (was good mind).
I watch 99% of my film on my laptop at work on nights, mind you some of the crap I watch you would not pay to see it

I enjoyed the Hobbit and I heard that Gangster Squad was utter shit so I think you know where my vote would go.

Hobbit is an enjoyable entertainment blockbuster that looks incredibly good on the big screen, it's a beautiful looking film. It's worth seeing at the pictures, definitely. But I don't know about Gangster Squad, haven't seen it.

Ended up seeing Gangster Squad. Stylistically, I loved it. However, the plot was boring and there were several cliches I rolled my eyes at. The acting made up for some plot deficiencies. I couldn't help feeling that Josh Brolin was miscast because he is far too old to be playing his role and then I got back and looked online and he is only 44. Weird.

7.5/10

Well I doubt they could have sat down with Seal Team Six and actually got a minute-by-minute run down of the whole saga. I am guessing there must have been somehow talking about a few of the events that occurred and they must have used other documentaries.

I watched ZDT last night and I really liked the raid scene. It was great that they didn't try to 'die-hard' that bit as it could have been very tempting. I would imagine that's how it goes most of the time for those elite US squads. Completely overpower and overawe the opposition so any resistance is futile.

Flight - Really enjoyed it. Denzel Washington is brilliant, as he usually is. Aside from that, John Goodman played Denzel's drug dealer and was great. Away to watch Django now.

I don't know, for me personally, Denzel's acting has got a stage where it's always the same... not saying it's not good but becoming a tad predictable for me

I'm really looking forward to this. I watched Out of Time the other night, which was a okay film at best, but Denzel just elevates anything he's in for me... I could literally watch him in any movie and have a good time with it.

Even Book of Eli?

But if you haven't, you should definitely check out Man on Fire, Training Day and John Q... they are my favorite Denzel flicks

Yeah John Q. is one of his not that well known I think but it's worth a watch. Though I saw it a long time ago and I wonder whether if I saw it again now its take on the American medical system would seem a bit simplistic... can't remember to be honest. Training Day is good though his performance is a bit OTT, and didn't really deserve an oscar in my opinion.

I quite like Denzel Washington, he's a competent actor, but I don't think he's a great actor. There's rarely been a film where he's really blown me away, but that's maybe partly due to having the impression he plays the same character film after film.

I really enjoyed Flight too. Same reasons.

I like Book of Eli! It looks incredible, it's shot superbly, Denzel gets to be a badass and Gary Oldman gets to over-act... what's not to like?

I like all those films, the former two because they're good films, and the later because, again, it's Denzel. I even enjoyed Taking of Pelham, which is really, a dreadful film, but damnit, Denzel entertains me.

Not even Glory, Malcolm X or Hurricane?

And that Oscar win was more due to the fact that he probably should have won one previously then the actual performance in Training Day (which is still excellent no-less).

Also, it wasn't the strongest field in the world that year. There was Russel Crowe (A Beautiful Mind - meh), Sean Penn (I Am Sam - Played the disibility card), Will Smith (Ali - He was great, but still, who could ever be Ali) and Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom, which I haven't seen).

It's evangelist drivel.

I never get bothered about that kind of stuff, religious/anti-religious... Meh, it won't change my opinion... so if that's the story they want to tell, fair enough. As long as it's an entertaining ride, I'm not too worried.

Also, the end of the film sort of pulls it the other way by
placing the Bible alongside any other religious text
but I suppose thats just one bit in a film that clearly implies divine intervention.

Ah actually he was brilliant in Malcolm X, yep you're right Annihilate! That for me was his real standout career performance, shame he didn't win the oscar for that. Also I pointed out the oscar thing just to underline I didn't think he was brilliant in Training Day (just very good), but in fairness oscars don't mean much, they're often just won after intense lobbying, and if I recall correctly, that year there was huge buzz about how for the first time two black actors (him and Halle Berry) could win it the same year.

Anyway, I don't want to be seen as not rating him, he's a very competent actor who gets the job done in most of his films, and my point that he's the same in each film was probably a bit exagerated, it's just during the last few years that I've had that feeling I think.

I didnt like Malcolm X but still think he was very good in it. The Hurricane was another stand out performance. I thought his performance in Flight was great.

The film was well put together but his performance wasnt very convincing in my opinion...

I remember the claims of racism as the Oscar eluded many good performances from him but he won it when he played a bent cop

Dancer in the Dark - Apart from a few truly electrifying musical numbers I thought it was one of Von Trier's lesser works, a bit dreary with too much dogme and too much 60's beigeness.

I don't know, for me personally, Denzel's acting has got a stage where it's always the same... not saying it's not good but becoming a tad predictable for me

Couldn't agree more. He's very watchable but nothing special. His chat show appearances annoy me more than they should. Smarmy arsehole.

Watched Jack Reacher. Meh. I still think they could have found someone better than Tom Cruise to play Reacher. You could see he was trying to be too much like the character from the book but he didn't have the flair the character has in the books. 6/10

Smokin' Aces - What a gigantic waste of time this was. Right, so you have a plot - and it's not a bad one either... I mean the idea of a bunch of hitmen/assassins/gangsters all competing to go kill someone on the top floor of a hotel is actually a fairly decent prospect, and could lead to a fun, if stupid, action film. You could maybe spend 15 minutes setting the scene up, then just have fun with it for the rest of the film...

But no, what you actually do is make a film that is mainly people discussing this plot idea, without actually doing anything, so that by the time people actually start to shoot each other, you're so bored, you couldn't give two flying shits of what is occuring on screen. And then, when that 20 minutes it's over, it then spends another 15 minutes on more stupid, pointless, trying to be clever but is actually just ridiculous, plot.

My only conclusion is that possibly the film is being meta, and it wants you to shoot yourself, Assassin style.

House of Flying Daggers - I love this film, it's fecking beautiful... so I got it on Blu-Ray the other day, and I was a little disappointed with the transfer. I expected a bit more of a pop from the visuals, I mean, it still looked spectacular, but I wanted something more. The sound quality was pretty good mind.

I come back in to see some of you slagging off Denzel. Shame on you!

Django Unchained - Absolutely brilliant. Jamie Foxx is good, but Cristoph Waltz is brilliant. I think he played the SS officer in Inglorious Basterds where he was fantastic also. Personal favourite was DiCaprio as Candie. Very entertaining, hilarious at some points too. Loved it.
