Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Hansel n Gretel

I'm only there for Gemma in Leather, it's a mindless fantasy flick with no character depth, lousy acting, shit one liner, and although they're upping the gory side the battle itself looks like power ranger

I'd give it 5/10 only for Gemma in Leather, again

It's possible, those films have got some great soundtracks though!
Yeah, Almost Famous has one of the best ever (listening to Mrs. Wagner's Pies now). That's kind of the point, his films hit all the right spots in terms of recreating the image of something, a scene, but without any sort of authentic feeling. The only emotions are schmaltzy. They just feel films perfectly crafted to make a ton of money. Which for something like Jerry Maguire is cool, but something meant as some sort of glimpse of real life / coming-of-age, there feels nothing of value.

To take Pearl Jam Twenty, it gives you a great image of the band explaining the history of Mother Love Bone, Seattle, the stuff with Ticketmaster, but you don't get any feeling for what the music means & it just ends up being a sycophantic fluff piece.

That's just how it is for me & why I should never discuss anything critically, I can never explain what I mean & half the time I don't even know what it is I do mean!

I think that Almost famous was a very affectionate film about the music scene he encountered and that within the confines of a Hollywood film that was obviously mean for enjoyment he managed to raise it well above a fluff piece. While it wasn't a gritty documentary (or meant to be) I think it gave enough feeling of the time and place to make it authentic enough to enjoy for what it was. Very feel films manage to be charming and this one managed it.

Of course the bare truth would probably be rather depressing anyway and in the end most films we watch are to primarily to entertain us.

I found Pearl Jam Twenty really great, thoroughly enjoyed that. I was listening to Pearl Jam & Vedder for weeks after that.

I watched Argo last night. Thought it was very good. Didn't see the whole propaganda and american agenda stuff some were talking about on here.

The whole American flag flapping on the lawn and hug at the end aside!!

I get what you mean. Almost Famous was very warm but I probably would have rated it more if it had been more hard-hitting.

No - An excellent and riveting account of Chile's 1988 referendum deciding wether to keep Pinochet in power or not. It follows the young, talented ad executive in charge of the 'No' campaign. The other people involved wants to focus more on the the evil side of the dictatorship but he wants a more upbeat campaign. In the same way Mad Men evokes the 60's, this really evoked the 80's and it was shot with a sort of lo-fi camera which makes the news reels footage and the commercials blend together with the film and you're not sure at times what is old footage and what is not. It was a brave choice and it worked imo. Gael Garcia Bernal put in a typical intense performance.

Jaws

Just watched this for the first time in about 10 years, I had forgot just how good a film this was, it has everything you want from a film.
Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss are all excellent.

I think this is a perfect film and a 10/10 all day long.

Skyfall? More like Durchfall! Am I right, German speakers?!!

Not really, it was alright. The end was shit though.

Sounds good.

Con Air and Paul. A marriage made in Blockbusters bargain bin.

It is is so bad that it is good. Well sort of. Fun and silly in an Armageddon sort of way.

"I said, put the bunny back in the box!"

 I remember watching this amusing 'action' movie when it came out back in the late 90's. Other notable quotes:

"Now why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box?"

"Define irony. A bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash."

Con Air is my favourite film of all time. Amazing cast, non-stop one liners, Nic Cage, explosions... what else could you want?

Anyone seen that new scawy filum Mama? Any good?

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Agreed..if anything catch this movie during matinee pricing. It's mindless fun.

I watched Blade Runner years ago and I didn't get the hype. I'm watching it again now (about 45 mins in) and once again, nothing special. The last hour of it might change my mind, but I'm pretty bored so far.

Edit: Nope, thought it was rubbish. The speech at the end was good, and I liked the whole design and back story to the film, but it was just plain boring.

6/10

A film I just cant get in to , I have tried but I just don't like it.
It is just the sort of film I normally like too, been a few years since I last attempted to watch it, I might try it again.

Movies tend to be not very good when you're not actually watching them, in fairness.
