Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Been bored and watched all the Pirates of the Caribbean films recently. The first one was entertaining enough and sort of left you wanting a bit more. They got progressively worse though and the last one was truly atrocious, maybe the worst big budget film I've ever seen.

I thought the first one was really good for what it was. Trouble is the sequels were all so awful they degraded the quality of the original by their mere association. It's impossible to say you liked the first one now, cos it started a chain reaction that was culturally hideous. A bit like The Black Eyed Peas.

IIRC they wrote the Sparrow character as a gruff/rogue type. (You can see this if you read the script for the first one.) Then Depp turned the whole thing on its ear.

I think what happened was it turned into a crapfest once the crap writers tried to start writing the Sparrow character as zany on purpose.

Mark Kermode hated the Sparrow character from the beginning, and had some very entertaining rants about it. I don't agree with him, at least on the first one, but it's hard not to argue he's been vindicated by the subsequent depreciation.

In fact Kermode's bile spitting review of the 3rd one is more entertaining than the actual film tbf. It's up there with the Red Letter Media stuff. Only more stream of consciousness. And pure hatred.

I just watched The Internship, awful film, barely any comedy. The scene where they play the Harry Potter game is one of the most awkward scenes in a film I've seen. The tone was so off; couldn't figure out whether it was supposed to be comedic or some sort of drama about team building.

I don't mind formulaic stuff if it's actually a little funny. I don't search it out but it is what it is. The problem with this is that it just isn't that funny.

Saw this after the one you posted....

Have to say I disagree with every single word, especially the bizarre part where he compares the final fight between Batman and Bane in the crowd to multiplex audiences and their support. :S

That blonde woman going on about like she's just seen a really powerful piece of cinema, it was The Dark Night Rises ffs.

Kermode can be funny sometimes, like "Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley on the screen together, like watching two chairs mating" in that clip but he usually just pladders on without any real insight and has pretty poor critical sensibility.

I really liked the first Pirates of the Caribbean, and the second and third one are poor with their overly convaluted plots and shit storylines but I like the visuals in those ones so I can about watch them, almost guilty pleasure films I guess. The fourth one though, I remember exiting the cinema feeling really annoyed at the fact they'd stolen 2hrs30 of my life.

Also, in part 3, you have the benefit of witnessing what is probably one of the worst pieces of acting of cinema history when Keira Knightley has become the pirate queen or whatever and addresses them in a way that's meant to be be rousing and powerful. It's really awful, I feel uncomfortable watching that scene.

I saw recently how much Depp made out of the Pirates franchise, it's no wonder he keeps going back to them frankly. I forget the actual number, but I think it's over 100M dollars.

Just watched World War Z. I refused to watch it for ages after seeing the trailers and realising that they hadn't even tried to stick close to the book (of which I'm a big fan), but I gave it a chance and it's actually not bad. I mean, as a zombie film, not as an adaption of the book. I think a documentary style, or even TV series would have better captured the tone of the book, intertwining the different accounts etc, but the film was alright, once you get over the OTT superhuman parkour river zombies. I'd give it a 6.

I was watching The Purge. I would only like to mention 2 things: people in the near future are cleary all idiots and how the hell did they mess up such an interesting premise? 3/10

I knew as soon as they annouced the movie rights were bought that it was going to be an extremely difficult translation onto the screen. From a number of people it seems that it didn't work out too well. That's unfortunate because Max Brooks knows how to tell a story

I think you're right though, a tv adaptation would have been perfect. A mini series would have been outstanding, with, just like the book, each individual story building on the other even though they are relatively indepedent narratives

Now You See Me (2013) - Movie about some magic/con artists that is almost entertaining but doesn't quite work for me. 4/10

Perfect summary of the series. I went to see the first one in cinemas with no expectations. Was pleasantly surprised that it kept me entertained throughout.

The Town (Extended Cut): Good effort from Ben Affleck, everything is fairly well done and for a 2 1/2 hour film, thoroughly worth your time. 7/10

The ending was a bit gay though.

Might give it a watch tbh the storyline doesn't appeal to me.

It's not everyones cup of tea, for sure. IMO the main premise doesn't really stand-out, but is kept quite understated. It's just a love story when it comes down to it, all be it with a futuristic twist.

Saw Her. 4/5, perhaps 4.5

Really good film but wont be for everyone. Expect it to be a cult classic.

Was pretty ashamed of my girlfriend after the film. She said, 'yeah it was good... would have been better if it was a real girl though and not an OS'.

It has that rare quality where you watch a film and it gave you a satisfaction similar to reading a good novel. It didn't try to entertain with stupid jokes or thrown in action and drama for the sake of it.. it was very slow in pace, but with everything seemingly well thought out to give a purpose and not pure filler to move the plot along.

Saw Dallas Buyers Club last night. Thought it was excellent. Between this and Mud, we're seeing the side of McConaughey that we always knew was there, but he just hid by doing dire films. He's a great actor. Jared Leto is great too.

Have you seen True Detective yet? That shows the 'side of McConaughey' for sure. Its brilliant.

So, short on money but with 2 days of boredom coming up, do me and the girlfriend go to see 12 years a slave? It releases on DVD in the US in 2 weeks. Which means its soon available via.. various means.

I've seen the first two episodes and it is fantastic TV. I went on a House of Cards binge this weekend, but I'll get back to True Detective soon.

Blue is the Warmest Colour - Good, but not great. I liked the first part the most, the awakening and the awkwardness. It sort of meandered after that and felt quite heavy-handed occasionally. The director didn't half sexualize the actresses though, the sex scenes felt more pornographic than anything. I could watch Adele Exarchopoulos play with her hair all day long though.

I loved it, very poignant and harrowing film. However, I think you can probably enjoy it just as much at home on your TV, you don't necessarily have to see it at the pictures I think.

Saw American Hustle yesterday, enjoyed it without thinking it was excellent or anything. Renner and Bale are both fantastic, and I thought Amy Adams was great as well (the cleavage... so much cleavage!), but I just felt it lacked something to really make it great. The soundtrack was very good though, and the story was fine. You feel a bit underwhelmed because of all the hype surrounding it I guess, but it's still an enjoyable 2hrs.

Dallas Buyers Club

Conventional film that gives its actors space to breathe, and they're all excellent. I don't think much of Jared Leto but by God he was good. A worthwhile film that could've done without a bit of the melodrama but anything with McConaughey is worth it these days.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are vampires in this Jim Jarmusch film that amounts to the sweet sum of feck all. I could barely stay awake.

I was going to ask if anyone has seen After Earth because it is the new film on Sky Prem this week. Just checked Rotten Tomatoes and it got 11%, about the lowest score I have ever seen on there:lol:

Well, it's certainly not very good but not that bad either. Watch it if you're into Sci-Fi, else give it a miss.

Philomena - I can see why it's winning/being nominated for awards. I think the writers (Coogan being one of them) did a great job at balancing the script with humour in what is actually a very sad but remarkable true story. He also plays his part well as dose M aka Judy Dench. Having seen the real Philomena interviewed on tv recently I think they also did a good job of capturing her good nature and personality. Another thing I liked about the film was that while it is paints a pretty damning portrait of the Catholic Church this is balanced by Philomena herself who depicts the values that many ordinary Christian people live by - kindness and forgiveness.

Dallas Buyers Club: a good movie with two great performances.

12 Years A Slave: Exactly what I was expecting. Very well made, very well acted, very worthy, very predictable.

Her: My favourite of the Oscar nominated films I've seen, even though it does look a lot like a smartphone commercial. I thought it was going to be about how modern life and technology keeps us isolated from each other and so on, but it was actually more about relationships in general and how they work. The future technology thing was just a way of exploring ideas rather than actually being the main idea. Won't be for everyone though.

To be fair, the president's partner did just leave him because he had an affair.

True, although the majority of French people didn't seem to give a shit; it was his private life in their opinion and shouldn't matter with regards to the presidency. Could be seen as a more mature attitude towards sex/relationships depending what your outlook is.

People did care in France actually, not a huge uproar but still it didn't go down well. But it was also due to the context and the nature of the campaign he was elected on, but that's a debate for another thread!
