Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Damn those borderline rape sex scene teases. I pay my money, I want full on non-consensual nudity.

On a serious note though, am on a run of watching shit new films. Planet Terror was a serious letdown yesterday.
It's hollywood man, i gave up on it about a year ago and tend to watc indie films these days, but my colleague seems to be obsessed with any new film that comes out, he also thinks that Russell Crowe is the best actor of all time and that Bon Jovi are the best band in history, so like i said whenever he picks the film to watch my expectations are very low.
Do you work with pauldy by any chance?
No, does he have terrible taste in flicks too?

Stretch.

The film starts with a break upand then we discover that the main charactor is a recovered coke and gambling addict who has until midnight (of course, hollywood knows no other time) to pay a debt of $6000.

Then comes an awful cameo from the Hoff, followed by an equally awful cameo from Ray Liotta.

To find the money in time he picks up an eccentric billionaire who promises him the money he needs to "do his bidding" for the day and the two (but mainly he) embark on a series of misadventures that are at least somewhat interesting.

On the whole it wasn't terrible, A little too quirky for my tastes perhaps, but at least the story kept me interested.

5/10.

Involuntary - Ruben Ostlund (2008)

Several semi ordinary Swedish stories of everyday life woven together in a very clever and creative manner which really touch the profoundness of the surface of life. Much of how he films dialogues and sets up scenes reminds me of the Iranian master, Abbas Kiarostami. However, I thought it dragged on a bit too long causing several of the stories to lose their impact. Don´t think I liked it quite as much as his earlier work, The Guitar Mongoloid, but felt it was far more interesting then his latest film, Force Majeure (which I did like as well).

8 and 1/2 cocks up.

Child 44 -

Thought this film was good in all honesty, i knew it had a few bad reviews but i was suprised to see soo many people slate it. Yeah okay some of the Russian accents are cheesey and the plot can be hard to follow (mostly because everyones name ends in ***trov)

But i liked the story, i liked the characters. I like Tom Hardy alot and he played the role well. The only downer for me was the ending - but only because it seemed kind of rushed. The build up felt slow in some ways with alot of deviation Away from the main story line of the child murders. But i don't know, i certainly wouldn't rate it that low.

If you like watching films for entertainment value and go for the easy to watch films then i would reccomend it. Its a good film. Anyone could pick holes in a film - i think the problem with this film is it could have been directed and produced alot better so it was more
Clever the way the film progressed. But if your willing to sit back and enjoy it and accept that once in a while your not going to understand quite why "that" happened or "who are they talking about again" then go for it. Its not that hard to follow really in that it doesn't matter to the overall ending of the film.

7/10 based on good acting performances and generally entertaining. Serious movie critics will slate it but casually viewers will enjoy it i think.

Duel (1971)

I watched this yesterday and it was very good. About a man who is driving to work but then finds himself getting followed by this trucker in one of those big oil trucks. Very good suspense throughout the film. Steven Spielburgs first film as well.

I thought the ending could have been better as I was wanting to find out why the guy was following him but I guess it just adds to the horror not knowing who it was.

8.5/10

The Wicker Man

Really good horror/mystery film and one of the best I have seen along with Rosemary's Baby. It also captures what scottish people are like and my experiences living here. It's about a police officer who goes to a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a girl and odd things happen. If you are going to watch then don't google it or anything as you don't want to be spoiled. There's also a remake with Nicholas Cage which I think I need to watch as apparently it is utter shit.

I love both films and agree with your rating for both.
Now I love Nic Cage but his remake of the Wicker Man is one of the worse films I have ever seen and I have watched some bad ones.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Faith

Just finished watching what might be the most amazing documentary I've ever seen. Amazing, as in I'm absolutely fecking amazed these bunch of shysters have got away with brainwashing, bullying, slave labour and blatant tax evasion on a grand scale for so long. Mind-blowing stuff which needs to be watched. You'll never enjoy a Tom Cruise movie again.

From what I've heard, Cage's Wicker Man is one the ultimate 'so bad it's actually like the Godfather had a baby with Citizen Kane good'. I'm a huge fan of the Cage, but I'm keeping this one for a big occasion. Like my first born child or a Utd Champions League victory.

If by utter shit you mean the most amazing film since ConAir, then you are right. I mean in the film, he punches a girl in the face whilst he is dressed up as a bear

Furious 7
I seen this entire franchise in the cinema and this one really made me quite sad for obvious reasons. It's ridiculous to the highest level but that's pretty much why it has such a big following and why I love the franchise so much... you know EXACTLY what you are gonna get with these films... cars, girls, humour, chase scenes, car stunts, action, one-liners and a cast with great chemistry. Also loved the fact that James Wan directed this one... he did a great job. Loved it. 10/10

Any fans of Asian cinema on here?

For me Korea and China do the best crime movies followed by Japan.

I watched a bonkers Indonesian film called Vengeance of An Assassin from last year the other day. The plot is dire but for not stop balls to the wall action you cannot go wrong.

Since the two Raid movies came out especially the whole region of Asia has upped its game in terms of non sensical violence going back to the hey day of 80s Hong Kong Actioners (which Gareth Evans the director of the Raid movies is a massive fan of).

From the last few years i would reccomend these movies if you have not seen them...

Drug War
Confessions Of Murder
For The Emperor
New World
Lesson of The Evil
Nameless Gangster
The White Storm
The Terror Live
Special ID
Kung Fu Jungle
Tokyo Tribes
Why Don't You Play In Hell
13 Assassins
Confessions of A Dog
The Yellow Sea
The Chaser

Just to name a few.

In terms of recent movies i have watched- ill go with the most recent- Ghost In The Shell- cannot believe this was made 20 years ago.. the animation is super slick and the concepts are way ahead of their time. 5/5 for me.

I'd add The Chaser, The Man From Nowhere and I Saw The Devil to any recent films list!

. A Bittersweet Life and Johnny To's Exiled are another couple i would recommend highly.

Yeah, they're two more excellent films - feckin' love Exiled... great fun.

Might have to work through that list for ones I haven't seen. Really want to see Drug War, New World and Confessions of Murder (which I thought I had seen, but have mixed up with Memories of Murder).

Oh, Mother is another good one too.

Memories of Murder is the best Korean movie of the last 20 years and i include Oldboy in that. Confessions is just insane. Mother is fantastic.

Less Than Zero - Looks really dated now but RDJ was brilliant, Spader also good. 5.5/10

It captured so many poignant Swedish things well, but I agree that it did drag a litte.

Wild Tales - Great fun. 6 stories that are, for the most part, gripping, ludicrous, funny and - most importantly - really well told.
It's a scabrous black comedy, massively entertaining and LOLable. One reservation...

The scene-setting story has an unfortunate resonance with a recent tragedy - film might have had its release delayed for 6 months)

Avengers Age of Ultron

Quite good, nice balance for everyone, the action was blockbuster from start to finish, can't ask for more. The only thing I still have gripe with is that nobody dies (Not even a bystander), comical at the end of the day.

Nevertheless, a good 2.5 hours wasted in fun and badassery, indulge the kids inside of me.

8/10

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron

(re-post from Avengers thread)

Enjoyed it, but it's not on the level of the best MCU films (the first Iron Man and Winter Soldier). It's more in the "enjoyable but with no real rewatch value" like the first Avengers or Guardians.

Pros:
Spotlight shared around a lot, not just Iron Man central like I expected.
Captain America is done justice as a leader and fighter.
James Spader is a great Ultron.
Cap + Thor fight combos.
Wakanda actually shown (can't wait for Black Panther).
Scarlett Johansson is freaking gorgeous.

Cons:
Almost identical emotional and story beats as the first film.
Large scale action is loud and visually impressive, but it rarely conveys actual tension or feels epic.
Way too many comedy one-liners forced into the dialogue.
Cluttered with too many characters.

Any of you lads like Horror films? I've seen a few from Korea/Asia as an whole and would like a few more good recommendations. Don't get me wrong I like the crime movies too and have seen a few of those you've recommend, but I'm more into Horror/Sci-fi. Cheers in advance.

St. Vincent - A very underwhelming film. Bill Murry plays a cantankerous old fart who drinks, gambles and sees prostitutes so he invariably gets paired with some kid for some hilarious hijinks. There are some funny moments but the movie takes a sudden turn about half way through and becomes a bit soppy and clichéd. Murry is still great in the more tender moments and is really the only thing that holds the film together. Props also to Naomi Watts as a pregnant prostitute with a slightly dodgy Russian accent. 6/10.

C+P my post from the Avengers: Age of Ultron thread:

Just back from seeing it now, loved it!

Really liked the interaction between the characters and also liked the new ones.

I think it may be slightly better than the first, IMO anyway.

I'd put it above The Avengers but below Iron Man.

Seen comments about the overuse of cheesy one liners, playing for the laughs etc. but I thought the balance was pretty spot on for a Marvel movie, we weren't expecting Nolan's Batman type of tone were we...

That post credit scene

Stayed until the very end for the post, post credits scene but when nothing came on me and about 50 others looked like dicks waiting for something that didn't exist, the cinema people were laughing at us

Pretty glad I avoided most of the trailers/info in the build up to it as I had minimal knowledge of what would happen and I think it heightened my enjoyment of it.

Some spoilers now...

The hulk was great again, the scene where 'Veronica' repeatedly punched Hulk in the head

Liked Quicksilver and his sister (didn't catch her name) but wasn't shocked that he died, was expecting one of them to die. I though it was going to be Hawkeye after them showing his family etc.

That post credit s scene looked awesome, Thanos is going to be such a badass and from my (limited) knowledge he is more powerful than any of them right? So I'll be looking forward to seeing how that battle plays out.

Also my enjoyment was slightly marred by the fact that I was sat next to some douches that kept laughing at the "sad" parts. Quicksilver death, BW sterilised etc. Was massively odd, they were literally the only two that laughed

Will definitely see it again at least twice as I wasn't feeling too great so it was kind of too much to take in at once.

Overall solid 8.5/10

Here are few Asian ones you may like:
Shutter
Infection
Dark Water
Ghost Train
The Eye
One Missed Call

Saw some films on the plane:

The Drop
Didn't really like this too much. Acting was good and the build up and resolution was executed well but it just felt empty, soulless and pointless 5.5/10

The Secret Life Of Walter Kitty

Another one that wasn't great. The concept was cool but the film didn't take enough risks and wasn't big enough. Missed opportunity 5/10

Citizen Kane and the Meaning of Rosebud

citizen-kane-rosebud-895f1.png

Citizen Kane has long been acclaimed as a work of genius and endlessly dissected by critics. But a mystery still lies at the heart of this masterpiece. On the eve of Orson Welles’s centenary, Peter Bradshaw comes up with his own theory about the film’s clinching moment...

The Monuments Men

I had to turn it off after 45 mins it was that bad. Boring, terrible script, crap characters, horrible score. What a waste of talent and money.
