Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Faults Entertaining mind-bending psychological thriller that gets really creepy as it reaches its climax. Well worth a watch. Brilliant performances from the two leads. 8/10

Jupiter Ascending - Not good. All over the place. The characters are stupid, especially Jupiter. When I say stupid I don't mean have a crazy ridiculous Character, they just make stupid decisions. Also Mila Kunis can't act. She's fit. But can't act. So expressionless throughout the film.

Any fans of Asian cinema on here?

For me Korea and China do the best crime movies followed by Japan.

I watched a bonkers Indonesian film called Vengeance of An Assassin from last year the other day. The plot is dire but for not stop balls to the wall action you cannot go wrong.

Since the two Raid movies came out especially the whole region of Asia has upped its game in terms of non sensical violence going back to the hey day of 80s Hong Kong Actioners (which Gareth Evans the director of the Raid movies is a massive fan of).

From the last few years i would reccomend these movies if you have not seen them...

Drug War
Confessions Of Murder
For The Emperor
New World
Lesson of The Evil
Nameless Gangster
The White Storm
The Terror Live
Special ID
Kung Fu Jungle
Tokyo Tribes
Why Don't You Play In Hell
13 Assassins
Confessions of A Dog
The Yellow Sea
The Chaser

Just to name a few.

In terms of recent movies i have watched- ill go with the most recent- Ghost In The Shell- cannot believe this was made 20 years ago.. the animation is super slick and the concepts are way ahead of their time. 5/5 for me.

They don't make the Gangstar movie like the Hongkie do in the 90s, the days of "A better tomorrow", "the rich and famous", "Lee rock", "Casino", and so many other glorification of love, drugs, and tragic gangster movie.

If you like the drama abit more you can try Takashi's Miike Shinjuku triad trilogy, but I'd prefer Takeshi's Kitano genre, it's abit more subtle and darker (although both are equally dark).

The Koreans have up their ante on their gangster movies, which is quite a refreshing. The chinese I must disagree, they're like HK in the 80s with soapy film making, soapy acting, and borderline shit.

Tazza II (Korean)
For the Emperor (Korean)
Fatal Move (Korean)
Overheard (JK)
Election I and Election II (HK)
The Young and Dangerous series (if you haven't watch them, you should)

Jupiter Ascending

A Poundland version of Star Wars, And even that is disrespectful to the classic movie. Mila Kunis cannot even save this one. 2/10

Iv just reviewed it then seen your post. Horrible film isn't it! Doesn't make any sense and the scenes with the CGI there is that much going on you cannot even see what is meant to be happening. I thought that to about Kunis, In fact she doesn't even look as fit as she used to be (but that's just my opinion).

was going to watch this , might just give it a miss now.

Yep, Jupiter Ascending is a terrible movie. Despite some cool visual effects and good production design for the most part, it's not very engaging on an intellectual or emotional level. Went in with decent expectations because of the Wachowskis, but it's conceptually flawed, the script is kind of derivative and tepid, with labored pace, sub-par acting/ delivery and trite plot devices. Probably the worst Sci-Fi/ Fantasy genre movie I've had the misfortune of seeing in recent memory, apart from maybe Seventh Son.

1/5.

You don't like the ending? I think it's pretty great, all the cocaine paranoia induced day part.

Definitely love that film, Scorsese at his best.
I do like the ending, I just feel like it is not on the level as the first 3 quarter. No shame though because as I said the above the 3 quarters is perfection.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron
I liked this but didn't love it like I did the first one probably because the novelty of seeing so many heroes in one film has lessened. It got to the equilibrium disruption quicker which was good but it tried way to hard to be funny. It developed characters better, especially Cap and Hawkeye but I thought Ultron wasn't as menacing as they made him out to be in the trailers. I hoped for a slightly darker film. Still was a decent popcorn film 8/10

The Thaw

A research expedition to the Arctic discovers that a melting polar ice cap has released a deadly prehistoric parasite.
I was not expecting much from this, Val Kilmer is not the best of actors , to be honest the acting from the rest of the cast was not good.
But I enjoyed the film, thought the story was decent and well thought out , It features realistic portrayals of human behaviour all the way through. From phobias, realistic explanations of how they came to the conclusions they did, to a person using a multimeter and electrical tape to actually fix something. There are no huge aliens, just lots of little ones.

Well worth a watch.

6/10

Fixed:

A research expedition to the Arctic discovers that a melting polar ice cap has released a deadly prehistoric parasite. Stars Martin Keown.

Dark Knight Rises - Enjoyable and worth a watch but my God does Nolan try to cram a lot of story into the last 30 minutes.

Seattle Superstorm

Made for TV disaster film with a slight twist.
an unidentified object is shot down by the military and crashes into Puget Sound, it sets off a series of strange weather phenomena: earthquakes, tornados, lightning storms... and they're spreading.
I've seen worse effects, and not all the acting was terrible...and that's about it for good points

3/10

Haunted

Was expecting a ghost story, but got a romance, all be it with a bit of a twist at the end, but to be honest not one that you could not see coming at 100 mph straight for you.

Kate Beckinsale was good as Christina and Aidan Quinn as the Prof was also very good but that was it.
For me the film failed at being a ghost story and a romance.

4/10

Bonnie & Clyde

Hasn't aged well. It starts off being very interesting and the two leads are mesmerizing but it then devolves into Keystone Kops slapstick with silly banjo caper music. The whole cast becomes annoying and you can't like any of them. Faye Dunaway was the best thing in the film and you have to wonder what happened to her career. The shrieking woman who won an oscar is crap, Gene Hackman is OK but mostly a dumb galoot, Gene Wilder has a funny little appearance and Beatty is pretty good but not evil enough for my liking. I know it's an important film but it's hard to see that now.

Bah, Kate in that film is worth at least 135/10.

?
She became one of the biggest actresses in the world. Chinatown, Network, Thomas Crown Affair, Three Days of the Condor.

I believe you!

I didn't think much of this film tbh. Was I the only one who noticed how shit and choreographed the final fight between Batman and Bane looked? Did I watch a draft version of the film? Because the fight I watched really was shit and looked like they were rehearsing.

All the fight scenes were awful in this.

The first fight scene underground was done perfectly, I thought.

The last fight scene wasn't as good, but didn't feel it was rehearsed.

Really?! Not entirely sure why but I enjoyed it, a lot. Might be mainly down to the crush I have on Tom Hardy, though.

I could not get invested in the drama of proper concrete installation, found it a chore to watch nothing but one man driving in a car in the dark for an hour and a half and a lot of the dialogue ("you always loved your buildings more than me!") went down like a lead balloon for me.

Really? The whole thing just looks so fake to me. (Yes I know it's not actually real.)

The concrete Ivan!! We've got to do something about THE CONCRETE!!!

I'm doing the right thing. Not like you. You were a crap dad. How many buildings did you ever build?

That was a bit bazalini vs solvista.
