The Death of Stalin
This is a political satire, an Anglo French co-production. It’s fascinating and often very funny. The opening, where one night at the height of purges and assassinations, Stalin likes a programme on the radio and calls them up is spooky and hilarious. Michael Palin is good in this, also nice to see some not so well known actors getting big roles. They didn’t have them doing bad Russian accents, so you get Marshal Zukhov with a Yorkshire twang. Apparently getting banned in some parts of Russia for being irreverent to their sacred institutions. Someone recommended it to me: they were right. Great watch.

The secretary was real in name only. She wasn’t involved in the events at all. She is fictional.
Not true. Almost every scene is taken directly from her autobiography. The scene when they met is an example. The only difference is it that it occured just after he became PM rather than just before.
Or the part when he talks about how he'd have liked to gas Indians?

I like movies based on true events or history and this one was good. Nothing brilliant, but good. Good portrayal of the horrors of war. Slightly slow moving at times though.

Rewatched The Big Lebowski the other day and it still cracks me up. Even though I know it's coming ...

Probably because he loved the book. It never should have been made into a film. If I hadn’t read the book I would have had little idea as to what was going on. It was a typically overly sentimental Hollywood adaptation too.

I've always been slightly perplexed by the Turturro spin-off idea, the character felt pretty one-note and perfectly suited just for that small part.
Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion man.
I'm pretty sure it was even smaller originally. Remember reading somewhere that Turturro signed up for the role not realising how small it was, and managed to etch a bit more screentime out of it than he was originally supposed to get.

Phantom Thread - DDL's last performance (yawn). Fussy, Hitchcockian romance from Paul Thomas Anderson; long, slow, gorgeous. A lot to unpack, it's pretty inscrutable on first viewing and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Lesley Manville is amazing as his sister/chaperone.
I guess DDL couldn't play the extreme method acting card this time in order to whore after attention and acclaim and had to go back to his old retirement claim instead.
Lesley Manville is amazing in everything, or well, she's mostly in Mike Leigh film's so I guess she's always amazing in them. Should have gotten an Oscar nod for Another Year.
I really like DDL but I do not fecking care about his method and his retirement. He has an amazing job that he doesn’t have to do very often. If he doesn’t want to do it anymore, fine, just disappear, like Nicholson or Hackman.
All part of his self-constructed legend.
It feels like the general public are getting less and less impressed by method acting, thankfully. I'm hoping people will finally realize that it's mostly perpetuated by overcompensating actors.
They are playing loads of old sci-fi films (mainly from the '50s) for free at a cinema near me.
So far I've seen The Man From Planet X (enjoyable characters, stupid ending) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers which was great. Tomorrow they are showing the original version of The Fly (I just watched Cronenberg's in anticipation for the first time - amazing), The Blob and The Thing From Another World. Anyone seen any of them? Not overly excited about any in truth, although they are showing Dead Ringers on Friday so got that to look forward to.

Loved the humor, Korg was great, but I did not like it all.
hate the Jeff Goldblum part , hated everything about it, but that did not stop it being a cracking watch.

They are all brilliant. I'm as fond of The Thing... as of Carpenter's remake and the original The Fly is just about the perfect sci-fi flick. I'd go to see them all. And free, that's amazing. We hardly get any of those golden oldies showing round here.
Yeah I've always thought it was a bit of a wank but at the same time if an actor does it and pulls of a great performance, the end product is all that matters. But I don't believe for a second Tom Hardy needs to bully teenagers on set to effectively play the Krays, or Jared Leto needs to mail people used condoms to fully realise his Joker.
And where are the female method actors?

For Leto it seems to be just a excuse to act like a twat.
Couldn't tell what kind of film it was from the trailer (though trailers for PTA films are in general pretty off the mark). What would you compare it to?
Rebecca and Brief Encounter, with a little bit of The Shining thrown in.
Tragedy Girls
Alternative take on the teenage slasher genre, with two girls setting up murders and committing murders to promote their efforts in social media. I loved it, the humor and the gore is great, I do love myself a horror comedy, and this one is one of my favourites so far. The acting is also spot on, and I loved the happy\unhappy ending.

How the hell could anyone not like the Goldblum character?
Presumably because they don't like Jeff Goldblum?
Because he was shit. Only thing I didn't like about the movie.
