Rio could return at Spurs
Rio Ferdinand may make an ahead-of-schedule return from injury in time for Saturday's trip to Tottenham.
The England international defender has been out of action since the Community Shield due to a thigh injury, but has trained all week and may now feature at White Hart Lane.
"Rio has a chance for Saturday," Sir Alex said. "I’m not sure it’s a big chance but he has a chance.
"We’ve had a good group of players training here at Carrington while the internationals have been going on – Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Anderson, Ji-sung Park... also young Fabio and Michael Owen. So we have a decent squad. In fact, it’s unusual to have that many players here [during the international break]."
Sir Alex confirmed Gary Neville had trained every day after playing for the Reserves last Thursday and will be available for selection on Saturday. John O'Shea, however, is unlikely to be passed fit after returning from international duty with a calf injury.
Despite having a "decent squad" to choose from, the manager knows Saturday's opponents will pose a stern test. Tottenham have started the season brightly, winning all four of their games.
"I watched a couple of videos yesterday and they’ll be a handful for us," Sir Alex said. "But that’s the nature of the Premier League. Hopefully I can pick the right team and get a good result.
"I think Tottenham can break into the top four. Harry’s brought in a few of his own types of players, players he’s familiar with like Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe.
