Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United

So basically your stats tell us that our previous trip to WHL ended in a draw?
The stats say what they say: no more, no less, covering many more home games than just the last time Man. Utd came to visit.

mmm, yeah, but they dont cover the fact that every time you play Utd you leave your arses in the dressing room and they more or less piss all over you

Given the stats and how well Spurs have done under Redknapp ( and that cant be argued) you should more than give them a game but you have a decades long habit v Utd of playing okay then getting smashed up for 15 minutes and losing badly almost every time

You'll probably do the same although there's every reason to see why this game should be very close

Tottenham fans have every reason to be optimistic ahead of this one. They have looked very good in most games and have tarted the season terrifically whereas we have stuttered a little. Plus it's at Tottenham.

I would consider a draw at White Hart Lane a decent result but obviously we're expected to win them all. I dread to think how the Spurs fans would be if they did win though, they already seem to think they have a genuine shot at the league so God help them if they beat us, they'd reckon it was nailed on!

feck THAT!

This is the slippery slope that Wenger made, last year. Pulling back on the expectations of the squad with mixed messages of 'I'd be ok with a draw - but a win would be nice...' is no way to support a squad that comes up against tough opposition.

That's been my logic every year, not just this time around. A draw against Spurs at Spurs isn't such a bad thing.

OK,

I'm just saying that, I don't think it's the most motivating approach.

Especially, going forward this year - The competition is going to be tougher. The threat of formerly mid-table teams are being given more and more media encouragement. I'd suggest that expectations of the past might not work for the best, this year.

It's my view, not Fergie's or the players. What i say on this forum has absolutely zero effect on the overall motivation of the squad.

I've already said i think we'll win but i wouldn't be too upset with a draw. It's a tough tie.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned the possible impact of players returning from long midweek trips. Those playing in Europe should recover reasonably well, but for those playing in South America or the Far East (Valencia and Park for us, Palacios and Assou-Ekotto for Spurs), it's asking a lot for them to be in the side on Saturday.

Despite our fanastic record against Spurs, home and away, Redknapp really does have a habit of pulling something out of the hat against the top sides, and this is definitely going to be a very tough game. Tempted to agree with CW1984 and say a draw wouldn't be the worst result.

Time to burst the early season spurs bubble of optimism....2-0, rooney/owen

I'd like to see Anderson start. He needs to be given more of a chance. With O'Shea gone, it'll will be Brown but I'd be happy with Fabio myself. Anyway...

Foster

Brown Evans Vidic Evra

Valencia Fletcher Anderson Nani

Rooney Berbatov

I have a feeling that we're going to have to atleast score two goals if we are going to win. For some reason Spurs ALWAYS seem to score atleast one goal against us for the past few seasons.

------------Foster------------
Brown---Rio----Vidic-----Evra-
------------------------------
Nani---Fletcher---Giggs--Park
------------------------------
-------Rooney---Berbatov-----

Parks there to stop Lennon who always seems to rape Evra.

Bench: PIG, Owen, Evans, Anderson, Carrick, Valencia, Fabio

My prediction = 3-1.

3-1 or 1-3?

Er ... the same fixture finished 0 -0 last season.

Is Rio back and ain't Evans got to have ankle surgery soon or has he had it

Evans played for the national team over the weekend, right? He should start with vidic. Hopefully Rio will be back for City.

What's our injuries situation like then?
VDS
Hargreaves
Rafael
Obertan

Anyone else?

Fabio played for the reserves last week.

Well...at least Lennon didn't play really well for England, so he won't be full of confidence for the game on Saturday

Spurs will come out all guns blazing, the first twenty minutes will be crucial and we may need to play our way into the game. This match will be the perfect platform for how far some of our players have come. Will Evra get raped by Lennon again? Will Nani torment Corluka or whoever they play at RB? How will Valencia fare against a pacey fullback in Ekotto? Will he show that there is more to him than just running around?

I have a feeling Berba will really come into his own this Saturday. There could be an avalanche of goals in this one.

should be a good game I reckon very open.

----------------Foster------------------

Brown------Rio(if fit)---Vidic--------Evra

Nani-------Fletcher----Scholes-----Park

-----------Owen-------Rooney---------

Berba to come off the bench

I reckon with the internationals people that were left behind (and left out of their internationals) will be a great shout for starting the game, i reckon it'll be:

Foster
Nev Brown Vidic Evra
Park Anderson Fletcher Nani
Berba/Owen Rooney

Evans for Brown if Evans is fit, i cant recall if he played in the internationals. I think Anderson will get the nod as he looked good for the reserves and hasnt gone anywhere so its not like he would be jet lagged, this applies to why i think Owen may get the nod but with Berbas current form SAF may just go with him (i hope he does).

If lord ferg says there's a chance Ferdinand may play you can be sure he's got no chance of making it. I'm also not sure how 'trainng all week' and a holidayin Prestatyn are compatible. Does not compute.

Rio could return at Spurs

Rio Ferdinand may make an ahead-of-schedule return from injury in time for Saturday's trip to Tottenham.

The England international defender has been out of action since the Community Shield due to a thigh injury, but has trained all week and may now feature at White Hart Lane.

"Rio has a chance for Saturday," Sir Alex said. "I’m not sure it’s a big chance but he has a chance.

"We’ve had a good group of players training here at Carrington while the internationals have been going on – Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Anderson, Ji-sung Park... also young Fabio and Michael Owen. So we have a decent squad. In fact, it’s unusual to have that many players here [during the international break]."

Sir Alex confirmed Gary Neville had trained every day after playing for the Reserves last Thursday and will be available for selection on Saturday. John O'Shea, however, is unlikely to be passed fit after returning from international duty with a calf injury.

Despite having a "decent squad" to choose from, the manager knows Saturday's opponents will pose a stern test. Tottenham have started the season brightly, winning all four of their games.

"I watched a couple of videos yesterday and they’ll be a handful for us," Sir Alex said. "But that’s the nature of the Premier League. Hopefully I can pick the right team and get a good result.

"I think Tottenham can break into the top four. Harry’s brought in a few of his own types of players, players he’s familiar with like Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe.

"He’s now got Nico Kranjcar as well from.......

I will hate to see Rio not fit and being put in this game.

I don't think that is true. People might go about the 5-2 game last season and the 5-3 game in 2001 where Spurs blew it. But they've done very well quite often against United. For instance in recent seasons they didn't do much wrong in the League Cup Final, the 0-0 last season, the games in 07-08. They've arguably played better against United overall than Arsenal. Liverpool and Chelsea for several years now.

Good news on the CB front for Spurs at least:

"Tottenham are hopeful of centre-back Sebastien Bassong being fit of the Barclays Premier League clash against Manchester United on Saturday despite missing Cameroon's midweek clash against Gabon.

The 23-year-old picked up a slight knock to one of his knees against the same opponents last weekend and missed the return clash on Wednesday night, although Paul Le Guen's decision to leave him out of the squad was thought to be down to selection rather than injury.

Fellow centre-back Ledley King is also confident of playing against United after recovering from a groin injury he suffered during the last-gasp win over Birmingham before the international break."

I'll predict the Spurs line-up as:

------------ Gomes --------
Corluka - King - Bassong - Ekotto
Lennon - Huddlestone - Palacios - Keane
----------- Defoe - Crouch

I don't think Harry will start with Kranjcar in Modric's absence, since he's only newly-arrived. I'll guess he'll give Modric's nominal LM role (with licence to roam) to Keane, who plays half the time as an attacking midfielder anyway.

 Keane on the left.
