Suspected team news:
Diego will most likely be fit, Ruud will inevitably be rested. Seba and Keano are both out.
Others remain to be seen

I would start

----------------Ricardo---------------------

---O'Shea-----Brown----Blanc------P.Neville--

---------------Stewart---------------------

---Fletcher----Timm-----------Richardson---

----------Solskjaer---Forlan----------------

Subs

- Carroll
- Webber
- Fortune (if fit) or else, Butt.
- Eagles
- G.Neville

Good point. I know Timm is, definatly, not sure about eagles though.

yes Eagles is .. he was one of the U-17 names submitted.
But Van ... sincerely I don think Fergie gonna field a full reserve team there (although I very much like to see one :D ) ...
I would think it should be like:
----------------Ricardo---------------------

----Gary-----Blanc----Rio------O'Shea----

-----------------Phil N---------------------

---Fletcher------Fortune-------Richardson---

----------Nardiello---Forlan----------------

With Timm coming in as substitute .. to cap his 2nd senior game after M.Haifa lost :p

I reckon there will be a few changes for the game. I agree with those who reckon Nardiello should get a chance. The reviews he's been getting have been awesome and i think he deserves a chance. There's no piont in risking players who are carrying injuries, slight or not.
Who's gonna captain? I'd like to see Rio given the armband.

The problem is that our situation gives:

(1) either we let FC Bâle win, and 'give' a weak team to the winner of one of the other groups for quarter finals,

(2) or we beat or draw FC Bâle, and 'give' a good team (deportivo or juventus) to the winnier of the other group, thus in doing so, this can weaken the other team (fatigue stuff you know...)

But I'd go for the first option, at least if there is a possibility that FC Bâle qualifies for the semi final or higher, this would surely arrange us as well as other teams in the same situation. What do you think? Very tricky indeed.

I doubt Basel would qualify for the semi... It would arrange another good team, possibly Arsenal or Milan AC, not a good thing IMO.

We have to make play a semi-B team, half players from the first team with players who don't play often. They can beat Basel. We have to be fair play with Juventus.

that is the biggest nono in football pal, if united ever did something like that i would never support them again

With that midfield we wouldn't have much of a chance. Basel are not a great side but they are better than people give them credit for. Our team will probably be made up from back up players but we won't field a reserve team. We mustn't do that.

--------------------- Ricardo --------------------

How's that? :)

No, it wouldn't be fair play. I reckon Fergie will make play at least 4 or 5 first team players, or usual substitutes like Forlan.

----------------Ricardo---------------------

Diego to play the last 30

At this stage of the season; with the schedule ahead and the injuries, resting players is the priority. Its time to grab a breather, we're through to the QFs.

lets get one thing straight

fergie is going to make changes but any team he puts out he will think is capable of winning the match against basle

the thing mentioned by dmode about letting the oppo win is a total non starter

i dont think any team in english football is capable of stuff like that, remember when we needed liverpool to do us a favour in 95 and they did when most of their fans would have preferred them not to

Yeah, and in previous years when we've already qualified Fergie always says you have to be fair to the other sides still trying to qualify. So, even though I'm sure he'll rest a number of our first team players, I would suspect he'll put out a reasonably strong side. Also, if you put out all reserve players, I don't think you're going to bring the best out of them and we're not going to be able to see what each of them are individually capable of.

Veron's missing the Basel game. Strained his medial ligaments :( . Why does shit like that always happen to us?

Anyway, my line up is

Ricardo

O'Shea, May, Silvestre, Tierney

Fletcher, Stewart, Butt, Richardson

Forlan, Nardiello

Subs: Caroll, Timm, Eagles, Blanc, Neville.

Ricardo;
G Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, O'Shea;
Fletcher, P Neville, Scholes, Richardson;
Forlan/Solskjaer, Nardiello.

No matter how "weak" the team we put out is, we always seem to have the strongest defence possible out. If Forlan is fit i expect him to start in place of Solskjaer, with maybe Solskjaer on the right.

It'll definitely be either situation (1) or situation (2)... if I were Fergie I'll go for the first one... Bâle is a good team. They can be of great help later.

solskjaer and forlan to play up front. should be a young squad which is playing to give the top stars a rest but i have got a feelin giggs or beckham will play.

Carroll/Ricardo
Neville
Brown
Silvestre
O'Shea
Ole
Veron
Butt
Scholes
Richardson
Forlan

fergie has said there will be a lot of changes in the mail today

but he said he has to be fair to everyone in the group

How many players are registered to play in the CL? I though it was about 26.

In any case, which players have we registered to play in the CL? I would gather all of the first team players, which is about 20? That only leaves 5 or 6 for the youth. Which ones are registered?

Timm, Nardiello, Richardson, Tierney and Fletcher are definitely registered. Not sure if Eagles is though.

Although Utd are already champions of their group as none of the others can match its 12 points, I wonder whether there's a rule which says Utd has to play its strongest side as the 2nd spot is still a three-team tussle up for grabs? ( I know the EPL has such a rule. )

If that's the case, we can expect a mixture of first teamers, squad players & youths!

ps - Eagles have been mentioned as registered although I'm not too sure whether youth players below 20 are affected by registration?

players who should play in the champions league

carrol/ricardo - give them a game each in the last two games in case barthez gets injured

o shea - more games under his belt the better

ferdinand - needs to start stamping his authority on the team and the games

giggs - europe and no pressure should give him a great chance to express himself

butt - needs more games under his belt as well

phil neville - ditto

forlan - ditto

ole - give him some 90 mins up front

if fergie played most of them and some other squad players we would have a good chance in both games while benefitting from them

We have 34 players registered in the CL squad. Eagles one of them.

25 is correct but you may also list as many youngsters as you like (tho, the players must have been with the club for a few years).

I agree with that. I'd also add Seba (if fit) to that list as CL brings out the best of him.

Why should Rio get the armband? Of the main defenders this season, he has undoubtedly been the worst.

Still can't forget his pathetic effort to stop Owen for the scousers' second goal in the Worthless. Left Keano to be the only chaser (and in spite of having to start from 30 yards behind Rio, he still got a challenge in).

I stand corrected -25 winners medals, but we have 34 registered players.

Tierney won't play - he is on a season long loan at Crewe.

My team would be:

---Ricardo
GNev---JOS----May---PNev
Fletcher---Butt----Fortune---Richardson
-----Forlan-----Ole

Subs:
Carroll
Roche
Giggs
Scholes
Nardillo
Timm
Eagles
