Tues 1945

Scholes should play in preparation for City and Keano played the full game today so that is a sign that he'll be afforded a breather for this one. Diego and Fletcher (for Ruud and Ronaldo) should start. Butt also. Otherwise same team. :D

That team seems a bit weak to be honest. This is the most important match of the season so far. If we lose this we finish second in the group and would meet the top seeds next round. We need our strongest team out there against the best team in Germany.

Biggest game of the season so far? Not Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea or Rangers? Come off it.

We will be meeting a class team in 2nd round regardless of where we finish. We may avoid Real but then what about Inter, Bayern, Juve, all of whom may finish 2nd?

We have to BEAT THE BEST TO BE THE BEST and if that means Real so be it. We have a Massive (scuse me) game on saturday and a very hectic schedule coming up if we are to stay in the hunt.

That's why Keano played the full game today. I'd bet any money he won't start on Tues.

drop keano to the bench and slot kleberson into his place in midfield? i can't see us playing with butt/phil as our holding midfielders

also i wouldn't be surprised to see fletcher on the right wing, seeing how ronaldo isn't usually played twice in a week

Finishing first and second is the difference between playing teams like Milan, Juve, Real who will all finish first in their group quite comfotabley or playing teams like Sociadad, Ajax and Lyon. Btw if Celtic beat Bayern at home next match they won't even qualify. Yes you have to beat the best but why wouldnt you want your path to the final being an easier one. Finishing first will have a big effect on how successful our CL showing will be this year. Thats why i think that this is a very important match.

Btw werent you the one telling Cal that we shouldnt rest key players against Villa today because teams shouldnt be taken lightly?

Yes I was and that has feck all to do with this match. If you had read my comments directed at Cal you'd have understood that this match is the one we should be taking lightly if any not the Villa one. We've qualified for the 2nd round but need all our points in the league. Thankfully it's a viewpoint SAF evidently shares on his recent decisions. We will have to beat the best to be the best, a sentiment that disproves all those who are shitting themselves over Real. The City match on saturday is MILES more important than this one.

Ok thats your opinion. I dont agree with it but hey. Ill accept you think Keano should be rested but it really necesary to rest Ruud? I mean he didnt play in the carling cup match so i dont think he really needs a rest.

Thats better but Fletcher has to step up and play better than he has been playing recently.

I'd rest Keano, Ruud and Silvestre - those are the ones important to keep fit.

Line-up:

------------Howard----------
G.Nveille--Rio--Sir John--Fortune
-----Kleberson--Butt----------
Ronaldo-----Scholes-----Giggs
------------Forlan------------

Not necessarily a case of resting Ruud. He can always use a breather but really Diego is in the form of his life and deserves his start.

I dont think SAF will take the game lightly. It is important to avoid strong teams, that will increase our chance of winning the CL which is basically all we want at the moment. Milan was damn lucky with the draw last season and certainly they werent the best team in Europe. We didnt have a tough match yesterday and some players fell asleep in the second half. Maybe the match on Tuesday will wake them up.

I think it's set in stone that Roy won't play. He never plays three games in a week these days and he won't be left out for City - he played the full 90 yesterday so that's a sign.

Errrrrrr, I agree wholeheartedly with Dubai_Devil. It is imperative we win this group to leave ourselves with a better chance of getting an easier draw in the next round, and I mean avoiding Real in particular.

It looks like Fergie's going to rest Howard and Keano. I don't think Keano can play 3 matches a week anymore so that makes sense. And Roy Carroll should be fine filling in for Tim. Otherwise, I hope we put out our strongest side. As things stand now, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Juventus will all probably finish top of their group. I would rather not play any of those teams in the next round.

Scholes and Carroll could face Stuttgart

Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to rest Roy Keane, bring back Paul Scholes and call up Roy Carroll for the Champions League clash with Stuttgart.

Both United and the Bundesliga leaders are already through to February's knock-out round.

But because many issues are still to be settled in other groups, Ferguson said: "I don't know how to approach this game to be honest."

Only Real Madrid and holders AC Milan are confirmed group winners and United will avoid them if they beat Stuttgart.

With each top team paired with a runner-up when the draw is made in Nyon next Friday, the United boss is pondering the permutations.

"You don't know who the other winners or the runners up are going to be," he added.

"You could have Besiktas, Porto, Ajax, Celtic, whose away form is terrible, they haven't won a game away from home and they are in Lyon.

"Bayern Munich should beat Anderlecht and could finish second in that group, but it's tight."

It is because things are clouded Ferguson has not finalised his plans and he said: "I will probably give Roy Carroll a game. At the end of the day we have got to beat them to win the group. They are not the kind of team that is going to bust their lungs trying to beat you, I think it is more a case of you having to beat them. "

The Northern Ireland keeper has not played a top level game since the end of last season and Fergie says he has missed the chance of taking over from Tim Howard in January.

United looked set to lose their American keeper for as many as four games because of the USA's World Cup qualifiers but the situation has changed.

"They have moved their games to June which is good news for us."

One problem solved, but another looms with Paul Scholes also likely to be available.

"I have got to assess how I use Paul and maybe bring him back and save Roy Keane for the derby game against City.

"I could put Keano on the bench. I thought I might just play him in the reserves at Bristol City if I wanted to give him a full game, but if I put him on the bench and maybe only give him 20 minutes it is maybe not enough."

I'd be confident playing any team apart from Real, so it's essential we beat Stuttgart.

I say we play Keano and rest him against Shitty.

hell no.. I prefer we rest Keano this Tuesday rather than losing again against Shitty..

Shitty are in a shit run of form (pardon the pun) and like Villa, we should beat when with or without Keano.

But, to be honest, I was just joking about resting Keano against Shitty.
He MUST play. :D

Playing Butty would be a bizarre decision - he's been awful in his last couple of games, while Phil's in good form. Also, we shouldn't play Scholesy, bring him back gently especially with the Massive game coming. Quinton gets found out at top level but should be great against City.

------Tim------
Gaz-Rio-Mik-Josh
---Kleb--Phil---
Fletch-Diego-Giggsy
------Ruud-----

Get Scholesy on if we can't break them down, and Giggs, Mik and Ruud off if we can.

Fergie said after yesterday's match that Scholesy's playing on Tuesday. Wouldn't be surprised if he started. Also saw comments today where Fergie said he took RVN off yesterday with the matches against Stuttgart and City in mind, so I'd expect to see RVN start on Tuesday.

I'm not calling for anything radical - just common sense. Roy played the full 90 on saturday so he won't play on tuesday, simple as.

I've just watched the match City vs Everton, and City is quite a crap team. They have lost 2 or 3 consecutive games. We dont need Keano that much for this weekend match. Kleberson can fill his place and Schole for Kleberson.
The match Southampton vs Chalton is probably the best match so far this season BTW.

Anyone using this pathetic "City are crap" excuse evidently doesn't understand football. It's a derby. City have a good side who are in a rut - they'll be itching to put one over us on saturday. Besides it is moot - I will succumb to the knowledge of anyone who believes Roy will play on tuesday and not saturday if that is indeed the case. :smirk:

Playing on Saturday and Tuesday is two games in a week, not three. :)

Since when did Saturday appear twice in the same week?

And after City, what is the next game? Plently of time to rest.

Glad you consider yourself funny weaste. Three games in eight days whatever - it's too much for Roy and SAF knows it, that's why he played the whole game on saturday. He WON'T play on tuesday, mark my words.

I'll look stupid if I'm wrong but I'm putting my neck on the line! :nervous:

I think MU should play their strongest side. That means Ruud, Forlan, Kleb, Ronaldo and maybe Scoles if he's fit.

Lets see what Fergie decides.

Maybe Wes might make an appearance?

We really should field our strongest team. So IMO, and considering this is a German team, we should play the 4-4-2.

Keane is needed against City. Those tossers always raise their game against us...it is their Cup Final. Besides 3 points against City is more important than Finishing Top in our group...if it was a matter of pure choice.

I think United should play with a mixture of experience & youth - this is one game they can afford to lose & at the same time, give the younger ones some Euro experience!

No point going all out to win a 'meaningless' game as seen last season when we beat Juve 3-0 & ended up meeting Real in the Q-Finals over-confident because of victory in a meaningless final group match!

i think we must put our best players.. take 2 goal advantaged then rest players like RVN, Keane, Silvest for Saturday games.

or we can put the big guns in the bench, and we bring them in second half, only if we need to.. ;)
