selling veron right now would be criminal, and diego looked very sharp in the midfield but his finishing was

and you thought some of the british announcers were bad...

Did anyone hear Veron's comments after the match? The Fox Sports World coverage had an interview. I left the room and came back at the end of the interview ... I caught just enough to make me think they were talking about his future at United.

Anyone know what he said?

He said he wants to stay at United and it was up to the two clubs if they wanted him to leave. I couldn't see if his fingers were crossed behind his back though

I hope none of our injuries are serious

Phil and Fortune all went off injured...we are serious short of defenders right now

Ruud and Ole apparantly had some minor injuries too

He also said the same thing Fergie did: that he hadn't heard anything about a new deal.

I am sure there are more than a few who don't know who the European Champions are,and hopefully this wil help educate those people. ;)

Juve started off for the first 60 minutes or so with De Vaio and Micolli up front. Nedved, Del Piero, Trezeguet were introduced around the 65th minute. You can see that our almost depleted second string team managed to score one goal on the first team of Juve. On top of that, we only allowed one goal (thanks to Timmy). This was a great presentaiton of United football. I am personally not a bit worried if we do not sign anybody else, although it would be nice to increase our depth.

fecking yeah, Juve will remember this game.

Up to only one club I'd have thought.

They all looked like they came down with cramp to me, especially the way they all went within about 10 minutes of each other, hardly surprising given the effort they'd put in.

From "The Daily Quickie" at ESPN.com

Dispatch from Quickie editor David Schoenfield from the Man Utd.-Juventus game at Giants Stadium Thursday night: "Where's Beckham?! The absence of the tabloid star didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the 79,000 fans. The heavily pro-Man Utd. crowd warmed up by playing "football" in the parking lot and tailgating. We met some guys from Dublin who insisted Man Utd. midfielder (and Irishman) Roy Keane was the greatest footballer in the world.

The crowd was pumped and new Man Utd. goalie Tim Howard, in his first game since his purchase from the MLS, made several nice saves. The bottom line: soccer can be a huge hit in the U.S. -- if Man Utd. is playing."

Some of you Redcafers might need to educate them on some of the finer points, but the spirit seems to be there.

'Cowardly' United accused of ducking American clubs

Manchester United's attempt to win American hearts suffered a considerable setback last night when Major League Soccer, the country's main league, criticised the club for not playing a match against one of its leading teams.

Sections of the American media have also questioned why United arranged matches against Juventus, Celtic, Barcelona and Club America of Mexico but opted against a showpiece event involving a team such as New York/New Jersey MetroStars or Columbus Crew.

With the media coverage that would have been guaranteed, MLS believes that the men in power at Old Trafford have missed a valuable opportunity to spread the club's name across the United States.

"We're disappointed because we would have liked to be involved in some capacity," said Mark Noonan, the MLS spokesman. "It would have been of great benefit to us for one of our sides to play against one of the world's leading clubs, and equally it would have been of benefit to them.

"The American people would have loved to see a game like this. Plus, the league has access to network television and we could have brought that to the programme."

United were paid a reputed £2m for playing four games organised by Champions World, the tour's promoter.

"I don't want to sound arrogant but the MLS has helped to create the market they are seeking to exploit," added Noonan.

"We would have welcomed the opportunity to be involved but they made a deal with the promoter. It was a business transaction."

Although United have generally received a warm response from the press, the feeling is that they would have featured more prominently in the American media if there had been some local interest.

In one particularly vitriolic column, USA Today told its two million readers: "Manchester United - wimps, cowards, pretty boys taking the easy road like a champion boxer ducking the top contender.

"Can you imagine the headlines if they made a Beatles- style landing in New York and then lost to the MetroStars? Perhaps they figure it'll be easier to explain a loss to a mysterious Mexican team (United actually won 3-1) than - gasp - a bunch of Americans. And so they duck.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy knows he can't put any shots past Kevin Hartman and Adin Brown. These aren't the second-rate Scandinavian goalkeepers he faces in England, where the only star is the former MLS player Brad Friedel. And the Neville brothers would rather shank the ball into the third row 20 times a game than try to contain Carlos Ruiz or Taylor Twellman."

United might laugh that off but the MLS's grievances will be of more concern during a tour in which, despite the impressive crowds at their matches, it has become apparent that establishing the club as a household name throughout the US will not be feasible in one visit.

Talks are already under way about a second visit and Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the club would probably tour the Far East in 2005 before returning to the US in 2007.

This really burns me, as an American. The arrogance of the MLS to think that United was afraid to play an MLS team. Truth is United would have run circles around them just like they did Juve, Celtic and Club America. Not only would Ruud put goals in PAST the American keepers, they would make life hell for Twelleman. ( the Twat as he is known by the oppositions fans)Why are they singling out United? There are plenty of other teams from other countries here playing friendlies, so why target United? Because they are the highest profile team there? I beg to differ. Juve is a large team with a very good following. And if there was such a lack of interest by Americans why did the stadiums all sell out within hours of tickets going on sale. The MLS should be ashamed of itself for conducting business this way. Truth is many fans here in this country support European clubs first ( obviously look at the crowds at these matches.) and the MLS becuase it is here.

Chill out! Nobody in MLS said United were arrogant. This tour was started as a United tour and they are the leading team. United was the first to commit and if it hadn't been for them, it would never have happened. Did you read that Noonan or anyone else from MLS say that United was arrogant? The real deal is that Charlie Stillano made the deal and kept MLS out because he is bitter that he got fired as the General Manager of the Metrostars. Read between the lines.

And, United should have played a US club. I'm unhappy that they didn't. But, hey, if they help grow the game in the US, it will only help MLS!

This is true.

But if United say no, that's the end of it surely.

Unbelievable match, I loved every moment of it. We sang all the way on the bus over from NY to the match, unfortunately I was the only one in my section trying to sing, there were small groups in other sections that were singing, I just wish we were somehow all seated together. It was quite funny though watching the Juventus supporters reactions, they got quite surly quickly.

I'm not sure if anyone here was at Nevada Smiths on Tuesday or so, but Tommy Smyth was a guest there that evening, most the people there had traveled from England so not too many people were familiar with him or his crap, shame he didn't get any stick.
All in all it was a great week, spent in a great city, watching United play a great match.
