Varchester City 18/19 discussion

Etihad say they are entirely liable for it, and will be in their accounts.

And the football leaks showed they will pay just 8 million per year.

Considering the billion City spent prior to Pep arriving its no surprise they had a whole lot of players to sell on.
Pep has spent nearly £200m more than Mourinho.

From Transfer market, Pep has spent 140 million euro more than Mourinho. But don't forget, Sanchez transfer fee is not included in Mourinho's spending because it is player swap deal.

Thus the gap of their spending is not that big. please don't exaggerate it.

The Etihad deal was £67.5m. How is that inflated? Aabar Investments are owned by the Sheikh. He can choose to pay what he wants.

UAE deals are c. £80m. A small part of City's £500m revenues.

Mancini was employed as an advisor to a UAE football club.

FFP was a political device aimed at stopping Manchester City. Is anyone going to investigate Man Utd's links to Saudi Arabia?
Etihad only paid £8m. The rest was paid by your owner. As are most of the UAE linked sponsorships. 80%+.

Mancini was employed as an advisor to UAE FC at the same time he was Manchester City manager (who are also effectively owned by the UAE). He earnt more in his "advisor" role then he did through Manhester City. Any bells ringing for you yet? Or is it just straight denial?

What is your evidence for saying FFP was a political device aimed at stopping City? Silly statement.

MAnchester United have a handful of sponsorships from companies in Saudi Arabia. It would only be comparable if we were owned and funded by the ruling family of the country. As City are with the UAE. So once again you have flawed logic. City may as well rename the franchise to UAE FC.

Can you quote the part of the leaks which stated Pep "ordered" these signings?

Pep signed his contract in October 15. The signings of Sterling & KDB were a couple of months before this. It's safe to assume that City's negotiations with Pep went on for a few months. You would have to conclude that these are signings Pep sanctioned. They can't be Pellegrini signings as City knew they would be sacking him. You don't give a manager over £100 M to spend when you know you are going to be pushing him out in the not too distant. There is no way anybody else at City would have sanctioned these signings without knowing Pep wanted them.

They were Txiki signings as is about everyone in our squad. I think Pep doesn't have a huge say in transfer, just hands over a list of I'd like x, y or z. It's clear in the documentary for example, Pep wasn't really involved in bringing in Mendy and it was Txiki and the money men.

I thought that it was worth to share those 2 pictures. This is City's defensive actions throughout the pitch, compared to the league's average, in 2017/18 and 2018/19 respectively. Red means that they make more defensive actions there than the league's average, black means the opposite. It's interesting that they managed to improve their pressing and defensive ability and forced their opponents even deeper. Speaking about attack being the best defence (unsurprisingly they have the best defensive record in the league as well).

The real question is, will it be enough to finally succeed in the Champions League, or will it be Pep's undoing once again?

I really don't get why they've been destroying the PL ever since last season. I mean, look at their team. It's a great team, but how are they a 100+ pts team? They're not exactly playing prime Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets in midfield. It's a 30+ year old David Silva, a 30+ Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva/De Bruyne. In attack they have Sane & Sterling, not exactly peak Ribery/Robben either. And at RB they got Walker who was always just a solid PL player but not Dani Alves/Lahm. And at LB they got Delph & Mendy.

It's just baffling to me that they actually managed to get 100 points last season and are now again murdering teams left and right in the PL.

You are right and that proves two things:
a) the low.level of the PL other than 6-7 teams
b) Man City doesn't have a good enough squad to win the UChL.
Don't get it either. not as if they have top 3-5 players in each position. It makes me question the level of EPL teams but at the same time, these same clubs cause us and everyone else major problems. I can only conclude that clubs cannot contend with the style of play (not having the ball for extended periods), only to panic and hoof it back to them, as soon as they do get ahold of it. me and my housemate were analyzing this earlier.

Only a mediocre player panics when he has the ball!

City have on average 51 touches in the oppositions penalty area per game (highest in the league by a mile).
The opposition have on average 15 touches in Citys penalty area per game (lowest in the league).

United are on 30 touches in the opposition area and the opposition gets 26 in our penalty area.

Be intresting to know over the last couple of years how many of their goals come from just sliding a pass across the 6 yarder. Time and time again they seem to get people in to these positions in space to just play a simple ball across and someone has a tap in, where as United don’t seem to be able to play a ball in to space at the halfway line never mind that deep in to the oppositions half.

Yep. The way they use short passing and movement to open teams up is incredible, and a far cry from our own style of play. They made 849 passes against West Ham yesterday. The only way we're going to get close to that is if we put Chris Smalling on Mastermind.

We're far too slow in our passing and movement, which is something City do so well. Little short passes and constant movement off the ball means they always have an option. Our players stand still, with the ball or without it. We're not pulling teams around and so the gaps don't appear. The funny thing is, isn't this what they coach 8 year olds? How on earth is Jose Mourinho and Manchester United struggling with this?

Liverpool will push them to break records again.

It will be difficult to improve on 100 pts but the records for GF and GD are there for the taking. They have more depth than last season and KDB hasn't started a league game so far.

An astonishing stat is that they have conceded only 1 goal in away games so far (Wolves) and it shouldnt have stood. Yet fans still say that they can be got at.

Guardiola is redefining defending and this is his biggest advantage over Jose now.

Two words. Movement and coaching.

Did West Ham even have a proper go at them?
I watched the highlights, West Ham probably should have scored twice, biggest chance hit the post. It's not like they were passive all the time, they just lacked the last few per cent to capitalize on the chances they created.

Goals on Sunday just put up a stat that in that in the last 5 games between West Ham and City the aggregate score is 17-1.

They have mastered movement off the ball to a point that they score tons of goals with a ball across the goal and an easy tap-in (or some variation of it).

Pep is a brilliant manager killing the toughest league in the world. We saw his vision at Bayern too (though not as deadly) but he just needs to shake off this moneybags stigma to seal his legacy.

On MOTD he was asked how he keeps players fresh and focused. He replied because of the bench players waiting to replace them in the first XI. I guffawed and waited for a WUM smile from him. He was being serious.

How? By selling half of his current team in order to please Liverpool fans who are absolutely desperate to win the league?

Liverpool signed players for 200m in the last 1-2 windows and are just 3 pts above Spurs who signed 0 players in the summer. Why not sell VVD and Alisson and try to compete with Spurs? Apparently, Klopp can't compete with Poch without moneybags?

You'd imagine they just practice it over and over in training. It's pretty much every goal they score.

For sure. Barca were like that too, criticize him or not but the man has a clear plan on how he wants his team to play
And he has made it work in three leagues now. Remember when his style couldn't work in the PL?

By joining a team in a league that's not the favourite and not spending a vast amount of money. If he went to Napoli for example and did what he was doing with Man City or even close he'd shake off that tag. Obviously Liverpool fans want to win the league like many other teams.

You're the only team with spending comparable to Cities and look where you are.

Most dominant team I've ever seen in this country. Never since I've been watching football, have I seen one team so far ahead of others in this country.
Since our game was so boring I kept switching over. Their use of the ball is incredible. They hardly ever put any spin on their passes, so it's easy for the guy receiving to control it with one touch. Don't even get be on about their movement.
Found myself being mesmerised and depressed at the same time.

Fair fecks to them. They are miles ahead of the game over here. Hopefully Barca take the CL.

That was so daft. He's one of the best managers ever. In his prime, too. That, coupled with money, and he was always going to do well.

shame he's wasting away at City :wenger:

I think his core concept has always been the same, create overloads in one part of the pitch, he used Alves for that at Barca, Alaba at Bayern and now he pretty much uses his two CMs in rotation and Mendy as well at times to accomplish that. That's the reason why they always simply play a pass into certain spaces because they know they have to be open in order to cover for the overload they just generated. It also helps that they have a heap of players that can just go past most defenders and are very comfortable controlling the ball in even tight areas of the pitch, otherwise these overloads would be hard to do.
