We will never win the league with Lukaku up front

Never be a top striker....he's already a top striker. The thing I like about his stats are they don't lie. There's lots of opinions on here about his ability, not being able to score against 4 teams in the league but in the history of the prem, who's got a better goalscoring record when you also consider his goals where for Everton and West Brom? You can only be a top striker to do that year on year in this league that is a graveyard for so called top strikers. If it was that easy, why are there only an handful of players that have scored 100 goals in 200ish games? Any that's laced up a pair of boots, knows scoring goals is the hardest thing in football and that's why strikers cost the most money. There's someone called Morata, technical better......how many goals but I'm sure some of you are more impressed by his stepovers....I'll just stick with putting the ball in the net.
I used to think that, and I was hopeful I was right. I hoped the rumours of him being a flat track bully were not true. Reality is you don't know which Lukaku is going to turn up when he's given a goal scoring opportunity. The lack of consistency is followed by scoring the odd brace against weaker teams which fluff up the stats.

I see him as a great backup striker, second striker maybe even a tactical sub. Anything beyond that then his unreliable and unpredictable finishing (in a bad way) will cost us games. It's already happened many times this season.

For me, It's hard to judge anything this season with the context of what's happening off the pitch. The list of underperforming players is a long one. I don't think this is coincidental.....

The simple question is this. Would he get into the City or Liverpool team? These are the clubs we have to overhaul. I doubt that he’d even make the bench at either of those two.

Why does City and Liverpool have to be the barometer for everything. If Rom was put up for sale next year, how much would he be worth?

He'll still score 20-30 goals again this season...

We never won a Premier League title in the 90's with a quote 'world class' striker tbh

I think it is normal to be critical of our players when they fail to deliver.

BUT, let's give a chance to any player under the next manager and create a positive atmosphere. Maybe, just maybe, they will surprise us including Lukaku. I don't think he will be a top top striker but he can score many goals for sure and may be useful over the next years.

Lukaku is a big strong old fashioned CF who needs a speedy "Fox in the Box" alongside him. Someone who only needs a half chance to score.

I reckon he’d fetch offers between £50m and £60m in today’s market.

You may not have checked recently, but City won the league with 100 points last year and scored Pot loads of goals along the way. Liverpool are their closest challengers and are also playing attractive football. That is why these two are the barometer.

Anything above £10m is a rip-off for the buying club. What's the going rate for impostor footballers these days after they've been found out?

Why is Rom even a topic of debate... there are somany more areas of concern... RW/CB/RB sort them out and then we can address players who actually deserve to be in starting XI

I disagree. Lukaku will always score goals. He's done it everywhere he's been. Sure he's not someone to always drop, turn, take on three players and score, but he excels with clever movement inside the area - a poacher, if you like.

I've said it before, at Everton, he always had an attacking midfielder close to him, which meant he wasn't always isolated. He also had a out and out winger to supply the crosses to him.

At the moment, we play with neither, and personally feel a player like Firmino, Ibra, Arnautovic - you know, players who are comfortable dropping into midfield areas and linking the player, would be better suited.

This is the problem with Mourinho. He seems to buy players, but not actually think about what it was that made them excel in the first place.

For Rom to excel, get a winger who will keep the width and get crosses in, and attacking midfielder, who will do the running for him, i.e. Dybala, Griezmann or even Sanchez.

Lukaku
Rashford Sanchez Out and out winger

I disagree. Rom is a fox in the box. He comes alive when the ball is in the box. He does struggle with movement in the build up phase, though, hence why in my post above, I personally feel an energetic attacking midfielder, who pieces the attacks but also runs the channels would compliment Rom.

Not exactly a fox in the box. Maybe scarier in the area though.

He will never get the space he used to get at those teams. And also the scrutiny would he far higher at United than those clubs.

What do you think his strongest attributes are?

Given up hope on him. He just gives the impression of a carthorse which I know isn't very nice to say. His big frame is just not an advantage to him, playing as striker in the modern day game. Yes he's quick for a big fella and wouldn't surprise me if he clocks a mean time over a 100 m, but top class striker not for me!

He's not at all though. He's not a particularly good target man, he doesn't use his strength as well as he should.
He's a lot quicker than you seem to give him credit for, and his goal scoring record suggests he is a good finisher himself.

This for me too.

We're already struggling at centre back, a lot think we need a right back upgrade, there's no right winger, the left wingers have all gone off the boil, Pogba isn't doing It like he should, who plays with Matic etc.

Let's leave centre forward alone, at least until we see how it looks under a different manager!

Not the biggest fan of Lukaku.

Wish we still had Zlatan. He should’ve never left in hindsight. Now that he’s fully fit again, I don’t care if it’s MLS, this guy can still play at an ELITE level.

Wish he was still our number 9.

Next manager will make the mistake of giving him chance next season but after that I expect him to be chipped off to Everton or swapped for a real top striker. Hopefully Madrid don't move for Icardi at this period.

You said yourself it's MLS. Night and day in comparison with the PL. You're getting carried away!

It was a bit before my time as a fan, but surely Cantona was world class, no? And Yorke was playing at a pretty elite level, albeit for a relatively short period of time.

Cantona was world class, and Yorke & Cole were a world class partnership. Lukaku isn't fit to lace their boots.

To be honest, I miss Zlatan's leadership more than his on-pitch abilities at this point. I'd have a hard time imagining Pogba acting like this if Ibra were around.

Which one of our players will get in thoae teams? Pogba who wants to leave?

Not even De Gea will make those 2 teams, he can't sweep nor play the ball.

He is incredibly stupid, probably the least intelligent striker we had(atleast on the pitch).

Threads like this should really be locked during games too, it's basically a proxy performance thread.

 overall who would you say was more stupid (including off the pitch?)

I have no idea, but watching him closely he is really incredibly stupid on the pitch. Could be also down to his lack of technical abilities which makes him put his head to ground all the time and not being aware of things around him.

If you give Jordan Rhodes ‘proper service’ he will score 25-30 goals a season.

He needs to do more for himself, and more for his teammates. If he cannot, he is not the right player.
Hazard made a similar comment about him during the World cup. Basically if he doesn't score he adds nothing else to the game and that is unacceptable for a modern day top level striker. Its okey for the likes of Barnes and the Murrays or Deeneys, But not for a Manchester United striker.
